Around the League--Dog Days of Summer

Good read here: http://news.nationalpost.com/sports...-bad-message-by-bringing-patrick-kane-to-camp

"The NHL appears to have decided that it, too, will let the process play out before taking meaningful action, which is exactly what it did not do last season when then-L.A. Kings defenceman Slava Voynov was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife.
Commissioner Gary Bettman, having witnessed Roger Goodell spectacularly botch NFL player-discipline matters weeks earlier, suspended Voynov right away, using the clause in the collective bargaining agreement that allows him to mete out punishment if he determines that a player is guilty of conduct that “is detrimental to or against the welfare of the League or the game of hockey.â€

Is having an accused rapist in camp not detrimental to the welfare of the league?"

I image that there are a few Kings execs are just shaking there heads at this statement. Now, it this because it's Kane and he's part of the leagues "marquee" team or just they realize they made a mistake and hoping not to make they same mistake in this case?

Bettman is very reactionary to what is going in the world at the time. When Voynov's situation happened Ray Rice was all over the news. With the Kane situation sports PA are winning grievance hearings, and it maybe scaring him off.

Or

As Friedman said yesterday, when the Voynov situation came out there was not push back from the PA so it likely looked bad...and turns out he was guilty. Friedman believes by comparison the Hawks (and therefore likely the league) probably believe Kane is innocent. He mentioned that as much as we think we know the teams and the league likely knows more.

In other news, NHL Network is showing every Stanley Cup clinching game today from 2010 on...except 2012. I guess the whitewashing of the Devils in Game 6 isn't compelling enough to show.

It is a moot issue, actually.

Simply put: he gets Indicted, he gets suspended.

If no Indictment, no suspension.

Patrick Kane's press conference reveals Blackhawks' tonedeafness

McDonough actually talked about how the team’s success (he called them “the Camelot Blackhawksâ€) was based on doing things the right way. There was not a trace of irony in his voice. Bowman reminisced about his days attending Notre Dame. Quenneville gushed about the Fighting Irish football team and about how excited he is to see the prospects from AHL Rockford in camp.

I know Queenville has daughters. Not sure what to make of his complete lack of attention to this whole thing. The Fighting Irish? Really?

I had to say it again. But man that was just such a train wreck.

In all honesty does training camp really matter that much? It's 82 game season. He's a vet..... why throw everyone into a media meat grinder just so someone who already knows what he's doing successfully can be on the ice.... Do people really think that a player as capable as Patrick Kane isn't going to be good with or without training camp?

Is this just some sorta very aggressive defense of their player?

...

I feel better now that the media at least is ripping them. Yesterday I was peeved because it seemed like NHL, Hawks, and media were all in on the Kane smokescreen, but with the media so pissed, I'm okay with it. They're receiving justified, earned criticism, and LOTS of pressure.

I agree with those who believe that the league and club are privy to more info than we are and may be basing their actions on that, but again, looking at the 'league image' clause, it's really hard to understand how they're so bad at PRing things period.

I mean, if they really believe he is innocent, it seems like a smarter thing to do to just have him skate on his own until exonerated. I agree. It can't drag on that long if they have so much evidence that they can bluster like this in the face of a grand jury. And if they don't, it looks even worse at this point. If the NHL ends up having to backpedal and suspend him due to trial etc., I'm going to be right back to good and pissed because of how they handled this vs. Voynov.

I think it's just another complex sphere of human existence. If human history is anything, it's doing this or that in the moment, and then dealing with whatever happens whenever it comes up.

Is the NHL perfect? No. Did they suspend Voynov too quickly? Are they not suspending Kane before anything concrete happens because they may have suspended Voynov too quickly? Are they different enough that each situation is handled differently?

Everyone is trying to do the right thing, or the good thing, but morality is not easy. It's very subjective. If Richards is still a good player, do the Kings terminate him, even if he was found with a couple pounds of drugs? I doubt it.

Was it a dumb press conference? Probably. Should Kane voluntarily not show up for camp until things are a little more figured out? Most likely. Another subjective sphere is the law. Humans figured out that you're innocent until proven guilty. Well Kane hasn't been arrested, charged, or detained yet, so he's still a free man, and he's showing up for work.

Joshua Ho-Sang was late for the first day of #Isles training camp. He's been sent back to Niagara of the OHL. Camp over for him

Max Pacioretty voted by the players as the 29th captain of the Canadiens.

Hawks are close to a LTC with Seabrook, who was thought to be asking 7 yrs at 6 to 7 per.
and Teuvo Teravainen will get a shot at playing center.

Isles prospect Joshua Ho-Sang sent back to the OHL for being late to training camp. Isles are not messing around.

EDIT: Damn it, beaten to it by a minute.

Jack Johnson being accused of fraud in his bankruptcy case. An Ohio Notary says Johnson appeared in person and used his NHL contract to get a promissory note for 1.9M to be paid back in 30 days and never paid it. He said he signed other notes as well.

http://www.tsn.ca/lenders-say-bankrupt-nhl-star-johnson-complicit-in-reckless-borrowing-1.361436

RFF Family Partnerships, a California-based marketing company which is among Johnson’s largest creditors in his bankruptcy case, accuses the Columbus Blue Jacket of committing “false representation and/or actual fraud†during the year-old case.

Sounds like a real blood bath.

While Johnson’s case has largely disappeared from the headlines over the past year, his venomous legal battle with his creditors continues. It’s been so contentious that lawyers for his creditors have asked the court for permission to question Johnson’s lawyers themselves over his decision to file for bankruptcy, an extraordinary measure.

Johnson has been forced to disclose minute details about his monthly expenses over the past year, filing his credit card and bank statements with the court each month, sharing details on everything from his purchases of food and gas to gifts. He’s also required to provide information about his NHL income and NHLPA retirement savings plans.

But in what sources close to Johnson say has been among the most difficult developments over the past year, the Blue Jackets defenceman has been accused of working alongside his parents to secure high-interest loans – allegations that are directly counter to his statements with the court.

The article says Johnson is currently trying to convert the Chapter 11 to Chapter 7. If Chapter 7 is approved , he'll have to liquidate all his assets but he'll get a fresh start and his debt will be gone. He'd be able to keep his future earnings instead of repaying the debt.

Good. If you can't even show up on time, you shouldn't be there and don't value the opportunity.

Apparently he hasn't learned his lesson yet. His attitude issues caused him to drop like a rock in the draft. He was ranked in the top 5 and ended up barely making the first round. Despite being very talented, he is selfish , spoiled and not a team player. HIs brazen and cavalier attitude just rubs people the wrong way.

Maybe being called out and sent to 'time out' like any other errant child will make him think a bit.

Said Ho-Sang, in a lengthy interview: “If I was a general manager and had first pick in the draft, I’d pick me No. 1 ... In three years, I’ll be the best player in this draft. And I have no doubt about that. I know myself. I know the other players. I believe in my ability. There are guys ranked ahead of me who are nowhere near me.

Yup. Kid has a butt load of talent but 10 cent brain.

Hopefully he grows up fast or he will be a trade chip at the deadline for some NHL ready talent.

Kane should deport himself to Siberia until his meeting with the grand jury. Gary "double standard" Bettman should also reconsider his decisions.
