Around the League--Dog Days of Summer

Bettman is very reactionary to what is going in the world at the time. When Voynov's situation happened Ray Rice was all over the news. With the Kane situation sports PA are winning grievance hearings, and it maybe scaring him off.

Or

As Friedman said yesterday, when the Voynov situation came out there was not push back from the PA so it likely looked bad...and turns out he was guilty. Friedman believes by comparison the Hawks (and therefore likely the league) probably believe Kane is innocent. He mentioned that as much as we think we know the teams and the league likely knows more.

I think more has to do with Ray Rice and the NFL than the PA. The PA never once said a thing, no matter what was brought up, almost just burring their heads in the sand. The league suspended Voynov the second he was arrested for suspicion of DV . Kane, while not charged , is under suspicion for rape, and several new orgs have reported details on what happened that night to the victim, just like in the Voynov case. Now the league turns around decides to wait and see until a full investigation is completed, unlike Voynov case.

And of course the PA had no problem fighting it out with the league over Voynov getting paid and the cap situation affecting the other 700 members cut of the pie.:shakehead

Zidlicky base $1.5M. Bonuses for GP, PTS and playoff rounds won.

Nice pickup by the Isles...despite his age, 90 games last year , 84 reg season (due to trade) and 6 with Wings in playoffs and 81 the year before. Good depth move getting a guy with veteran presence.
1 yr deal

Also, video of Auston Matthews first goal...nicely done.

Metal detectors and pat down searches to be used at every NHL arena this year

http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/sto...tectors-all-teams-no-guns-knives-safety-issue

Teams are preparing to open venues earlier to accommodate the delays. The new precaution will supplement current bag checks.

No, you won't have to take off your shoes as you do at airports. However, fans will be asked to remove all metal from their pockets.

"The fastest way into the arena is to not bring a bag," David Chadwell of Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, told The Tennessean."

Best advice: Plan for delays and leave objects at home that might be confiscated. Blame fear of terrorism.

Anything that pushes Brian Strait away from the ice is a plus.

Oilers and Klefbom have agreed to terms on a 7 year Contract extension. Deal to be finalized in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Reports are that the 22 yr old defenseman signed for just over 4 M per year.

Nice deal.

And locally, at practice yesterday, Ed Snider making his annual prediction that the Flyers will be in the playoffs this year, that they are a good team, not 'chopped liver'.

Among other nuggets...current Flyers defense is the 'best' they've ever had...

http://www.buckscountycouriertimes....cle_57c2547a-5f03-11e5-8e54-ff31a3fa0e9d.html

Our defense is solid, better than it’s been in years with the addition of the Russian (Evgeni Medvedev),’’ Snider said. We’ve added (Radko) Gudas from Tampa Bay. I think we’re going to have a really good team.
“I think our defense is better now than it’s ever been. I’m really excited about it.’’

I'm sure 'the Russian' appreciates that...really Ed? Somewhere Mark Howe is cringing and Brad 'the beast' McCrimmon is turning in his grave.

IF Ed would just stay in Santa Barbara with is current half-his-age bride...and be a silent owner.

Klefbom was used with the pick the Kings sent to the Oilers for Penner.

Penner scored some big goals for the Kings in 2012, and it was far from a bad trade but this is why the Kings are going to have a hard time filling holes as guys age and leave.

Good point. Why I don't like giving up 1st round picks for rentals (lucic, sekera)
I love Kopi to pieces but he's 28 and there is not blue chip, top young center in the pipeline being groomed to take his place.
THey had that chance this year at #13 overall in a deep draft year. Had they done that, that 18 yr old gets 3 years or so to grow his game, bring him up at 21, when Kopi is 31 and the kid has a couple years to get his feet wet, before taking over.

Well said and I couldn't agree more. I think that we either win the cup this season which I think is very possible or that deal will be the defining questionable move of DL's tenure with the Kings when it is all said and done. I love DL and am not being all too critical but dealing away two #1 picks in a row especially with one of them being #13 in a deep draft when there were a few C's available who very easily could end up being legit #1C's in a few years. Love Lucic but high price paid for a guy for one season. I understand that when you have a true shot at the cup that you give it everything you have but man did we give a lot.

It's hard enough to properly develop a guy with 1C upside when you have the picks, it's almost impossible when you trade those picks for UFA rentals like the Kings have done recently.

The goal is to win, and win now. It's gonna hurt later. That's an acceptable pain. Ideally you keep both the now and the future, of course, and I think the moves for Penner and others who had term on their contract are better than for guys who are impending FAs, but Klefbom in 2015 doesn't help us win a cup in 2012 just like Colin Miller or Roland McKeown in 2017 or whatever don't help us in a cup in 2016, nor are they guarantees.

I agree with you guys though that especially the pick given up for Lucic could sting given the talent that was still available there. I'm not sad about Klefbom, but I could be convinced very soon to be sad about Barzal, Connor, et. al. (though I'm also a little shocked about us not jumping back in for like Konecny or something). I guess only time will tell.

That being said I take DL's recent track record over just about anyone else. Given the situation he's in vs. the guys with a blank slate, he's doing lots of good.

To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, not having a blue chip 1C prospect in the system is tomorrow guy's problem. Screw him. I'm today guy and I like what we've got going on.

Jones was gone anyway, but losing Miller hurt, IMO. He's young and has some work to do to grow his game more but he I think has the potential to be a really good defensemen. And losing the op to draft a center at 13? When do they get that shot again , with the depth of that draft?

Lucic doesn't give them an advantage for a deep playoff run. Pearson could have been moved to the top line and WEal put on the 2nd line wing. That 3M they are paying Lucic could have gone to a veteran center, not a rental, that would have given the 3rd line a more productive possibility and made them a beter two way line. Maybe I'm old school but it starts with stellar goaltending and a top D, and they have that. Although the bottom 4 defensemen and how that pans out over time is not a given. HOpeful but cautious. But that last piece for me, that you really need to go to deep and challenge for the Cup is depth down the middle and right now, they don't have that. Lewis, Brown and King coming over the blue line doesn't give many goalies shivers. And Lewis doesn't have the offensive eye to step up if Kopi or Carter go down.

They're in a tough division, and a tough conference. I think the central is a dogfight and 5 teams will get in. The Kings have a great system ,hard to play against in the playoffs, but it's that same pace, physicality and drive that makes it almost impossible to maintain success in an 82 game season. That's something they've struggled with (Sans the short year,) and some key pieces of the core group are older. It's a mentally and physically taxing system, and over 7 mos takes a toll. I think it will be a challenge for them, eps if they don't rack up points in the first 1/3 of the new season. Winning on a reg. basis, keeping pace and not dipping below 3rd place is something they'll need to do from Oct to April. Something they've not done over 82 with this system.

I think TT and TP will be HUGE for the Kings this year and look forward to McNabb growing his game as well. YOuth is s good thing to exploit. Hopefully WEal gets moved up, playing on the 4th line will do nothing to grow his offensive game, not with limited minutes.

It's most likely never going to be as good to be a Kings fan as it has been since 2012. No matter how many picks they have, and no matter which players they have. 2 in 3, and potentially 3 in 5, is about as good as it can realistically get, and even then, it's not that realistic. Montreal hasn't won as many Cups since the 70's as in the 70's. The Islanders and Oilers have had their problems since the Cups. The list keeps going. Crosby and co. were supposed to be the next dynasty, and they haven't won a game after the 2nd round since winning their one Cup.

You do what you have to do to get this group as many Cups as you can, because it's a lot easier for teams to go decades without one Cup, let alone many. As you said, guys age and leave. It's inescapable. To have everyone on the same page, at the same time, at the right age, with the right salaries, etc, etc, is very difficult.

At some point the plug will be pulled on the iron(maybe it already has been, who knows), so while it's hot, iron those pants.

Isles took a big risk drafting him, he's been a disaster in juniors.

And before Ho-Sang was dismissed, had to run the stairs at the Coliseum for three hours as punishment. #Isles

Should have made him run back to Canada...

That's freaking awesome. Well done, Isles.

This guy screams character player.

I really don't agree that you can just stick Weal on the second line, Pearson on the first, and expect anything close to reliable production.

I think a few of you are really undervaluing Lucic. This is a player Dean very clearly wanted, and when he wants a player that much it typically works out (at least in the short term coughMRcough).

With Williams walking you need a veteran winger to play with Kopitar and Gaborik. Kopitar's line isn't the wheel of fortune anymore, at least not in games that matter. That line plays insanely difficult minutes, and it's a little naive to think a sophomore player like Pearson, no matter how good, will be able to handle that.

That 70s Line will be in the same perfect position this season as they have in years past. Teams have to check Lucic-Kopitar-Gaborik. You just have to do everything you can to shut down a line like that. And that lets Carter and the kids work their magic with easier minutes and match ups.
