The question is either you punish them for being Russian or not. If you allow them to play in the NHL then clearly being Russian isn't an issue...so let them play together for a world cup.

That's such a f***ed up mentality.
If you don't see a difference between being a Russian individual and representing the nation's government under its flag in the context of national team sports, I don't know what to tell you.

I don't blame the NHL for not including Russia here... you simply can't with the optics right now. You can disagree with the idea of that, but simply the NHL has to take a conservative approach to not become a lightning rod of controversy. If the NHL was the only body allowing Russia to compete under their flag, it would be a PR disaster.

The battle of the St Croix River is going to be devastating.
Make The Twin Cities one!

Yeah, for the NHL it's this simple.

And although I strongly disagreed with @Balthazar just now, it really is as simple an issue as not being allowed to represent a government.

Is it weird and petty when you look at it out of context? Yes, I guess.

Yep and to think that the siege of Quebec City will be happening concurrently therefore blocking world access to quality poutine.

Oh, America is hypocritical about wars? :sarcasm:

Considering distances, with you being in Edmonton, this is kind of like if the US and Canada were actively fighting a war in Toronto, and people were like "Well, the players aren't in the war so we can still play the games in Sweden."

I'm not interested in a true political discussion, and we're not supposed to anyway, but Russian athletes representing the San Jose Sharks is way different right now than them representing their own country. The NHL can run a business all they want but when players form teams based on nationality, the tournament becomes political. This has, is, and will always be the case.

It's unfortunate, and it's not to spite the individual athletes or people, but it's something that as a European I can't support until there is peace in Europe.

Hypocritical, yes, of course.
Call the team "Russian Athletes Who Happen To Be Russian But F*** Russia The Country" for all I care.

Point is, they shouldn't be left out of a tournament like this. It's an NHL organized tournament, not a true international tournament.

You are asking are western people viewing a war in the western part of the world, right next to them, differently than in the Middle East?

Yes, that's exactly the case. Like I said, it's not fair but tough shit. Is it the same thing for you if someone you love dies vs some random on the other side of the globe? We are all humans after all, shouldn't make any difference?

It might be all the same to you in North America, but it's not the same for Europeans.
There's just zero humanity in saying something like this. Holy.

The Olympics changed Russia's name and flag because of old doping incidents very recently. Just let them play under another name if that's what it takes.

Not allowing them to participate in the tournament is just plain dumb.

Much like with the pride tape and cancer awareness ribbons being banned, the NHL are managing to make themselves look bad by not making no effort. Hockey doesn't have lots of countries to choose from, so when you can't include the 3rd biggest... just leave it alone.

I think the argument of doing nothing holds water here.

The counter to that is HRR.... if you want the cap to go up, especially with the RSN nightmare, you have to find other ways to expand. This event is specifically for that.

Players are representing governments now?!?

Completely disagree.

Of course. They wear flags and coats of arms all over and the country directly or indirectly funds the operation. What kind of bubble do you people live in?
