Pushing all-in with a bad hand when they traded for Duchene instead of selling Panarin and Bob is at the center of Jarmo’s failure.
On one hand, yes. Doing a proper rebuild by loading up on assets is the best way to achieve success in this league.

On the other hand, you had a franchise that hadn't done shit in their entire 19 years of existence. Try to convince the owners and fans that doing another rebuild when you actually have some top players is the way to go.

In the end, I still think that paid off for them. They got their first series win, and re-energized the fanbase.

One thing Pickard has going for him is that he's a battler but he's not really NHL quality at this point. I can't imagine Oilers having the ability to try to protect him by focusing on defense either.

We've seen goaltenders like Pickard, JoJo and Martin go mental for a game or two, so I guess anything can happen.

The cost for that upset win was three first round picks ++. They were supposed to lose in the first round too against Tampa, which makes that decision so much worse.

The reason they haven't won before or since is mainly because of bad decisions and that was the worst one IMO. They still pay for it today.

They basically sacrificed one draft. Given how many things went wrong prior to that under GMs who were much, much worse than Jarmo, I can see why they said just go for it. I get that it wasn’t the wisest decision but I still say that’s not where they went wrong. Trying to keep it going after that was nonsensical. Especially when Tortorella wanted out. That right there would’ve been the time to start over. Whether ownership refused to do it or Jarmo somehow came up with a plan, I don’t know. Regardless, that was a huge mistake.

@Pokecheque in today's 32 thoughts Friedman seems to believe that scratching Laine was Vincent's decision but Marek says it's likely Jarmo's.

Interesting.

Regardless they both agree that big changes are coming in Columbus.

Yeah I heard that segment too. Neither really had concrete info. Both seemed to agree that scratching Laine before switching him back to the wing was a curious decision at best.

It’s crazy they can’t get this right.

I hate Putin as much as the next guy but allowing them to play in the NHL but not in this tournament is pure hypocrisy. Also they need another European team for the Germans, Slovaks, Swiss, etc.

Leave the stupid politics out of it or else ban all the countries, because every country does some f****d up stuff - ESPECIALLY the United States.

So stupid how they wouldn't include Russia in a tournament like this.

This isn't a best-on-best. Wouldn't surprise me if several NHLers who are asked by the countries' respective GMs decline to play because they'll treat it like a poor man's World Championships.

Russia is currently in a war in Europe.

If all out war was happening in Minnesota right now, would you include the US?
