The media machine behind Hughes alone will get him at minimum the Norris and probably both the Norris and MVP if he continues this pace and the Nucks make the playoffs. I told @the_fan the media loves these storylines. Makar will have to beat Hughes by 10-15 points to even get a sniff this season.
Don’t think Vancouver is gonna sustain this. They actually started losing couple of games in a row but got lucky they played the Sharks not to go on a longer losing streak. They gonna come down to earth along with Hughes, Makar is gonna run away with Norris

The losing streak did nothing to diminish the Hughes media hype. Nothing. Last night it kicked into overdrive. They saw Makar fail first costing his team the game and then they saw Quinn Hughes skate circles around the Sharks helping his team win. Thats all they see. Did any media outlet outside Avs reporters even mention that Makar has 9 assists in 3 games? Didnt see any but I did see the Hughes goal from different media sources and now we got Friedman talking about Prime Karlsson not being asbig a threat with his shot as hughes is right now.

Vancouver is winning games with 4 players. That’s unsustainable

Prime Hasek, Roy, Brodeur... Pick whoever you want, even those guys wouldn't save this shitshow:

I had to watch that four times to really appreciate the calamitous defensive play by Edmonton there. It was like they cloned Yakupov five times and put them all on the ice together, a really breathtaking combination of laziness and cluelessness there.

it's not even a storyline - dude's been the best player in the league so far this year. Second best is probably his brother.

I've chimed in on Columbus a decent amount this season. The tire fire that happens with a late summer coaching change should be well known here too. Not that Vincent is good, but that's the same vibe. To go along with the other messes. Ownership has to be willing to accept a purge instead of trying to save revenue in the interim.

I'm not being baited on the other subject. ;)

Of the top-10 goalies in the 2010s, the only ones to win any Cups were Quick, Fleury, and Rask (as the backup to Thomas)

Hank, Rinne, Lou, Price, Miller, Bob and Bishop didn't win squat. Honorable mentions to Schneider and Holtby, only one of which won a Cup.

So maybe 4 if you want to count Holtby (I don't)

Long gone are the days when Roy and Brodeur would dominate their way to Cups.

The Avs did it for a season. Its unsustainable for a prolong period but its very doable for 82 games and im not talking about the Nucks success. That takes a backseat over Hughes season.
The Avs won the division last year with 3.
Mack over 100 points
Mikko over 100 points
Makar 60 plus points
JTC 50 points
Lehky 50 points
Nuke 47 points in like 50 games
Toews 50 points

Avs were injured last year but they had a lot more balance scoring than Nucks have this year

Brock Boeser is on pace for 95 points.
Kuzmenko on pace for 60

I understand pace doesnt mean to much but the Nucks are a little more then just the 3 guys. The Pacific is also shit so they can probably make the playoffs on the strength of those 3 guys and Demko. You also have to imagine at some point they are going to want to add to their roster. Probably starting with trading Judy Garland somewhere.

It’s Beauvillier they’ll move if they can. Tocchet seems to like Garland. If I were the Canucks, I’d be less worried about my offence holding up and more worried about those bottom 4 pairings and what happens when Demko’s HDSV% comes back down to earth (he’s not going to maintain at almost a full 10% more shots saved than 3rd best) if they don’t tight up how many high danger shots they give up

I mean they get contributions from their top 6 and absolutely nothing from their bottom 6. That can last a little while but just ask the Oilers how it’s working out for them, although the Nucks have a very good goalie so that’s helping them too. We know that not having depth on bottom 6 will not get you far

I wrote about this not long ago:

Due to the lack of defensive structure in hockey for the longest time it felt like the only way to win a championship at any level was having an elite goalie. If you had a very good no. 2 then you still stood a chance but usually once your no. 1 goalie went down that was it. Call the season, playoffs, tournament over as you just could not win enough with the no. 2 goalie. Just look at the NHL Stanley Cup winners from 1990 to pre-full season lockout. Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy, Ed Belfour, Martin Brodeur, Tom Barrasso, Dominik Hasek are all Hockey Hall of Famers and account for 11/14 of the Stanley Cups won from 1990 to 2004. Post lock-out how many Hockey Hall of Famers or probable future ones have won Cups as the no. 1 goalie? In that time the goalies to have won are Cam Ward, Jean-Sebastian Giguere, Marc-Andre Fleury, Antti Niemi, Tim Thomas, Corey Crawford, Jonathan Quick, Matt Murray, Braden Holtby, Jordan Binnington, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Darcy Kuemper, and Adin Hill. No current Hockey Hall of Famers in that group and arguably only 3 or 4 of those goalies are going to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Far cry from the previous pre-full lockout era.

It was good enough for the Oilers to get to the playoffs for awhile. Its only come crashing down on them now. Same thing might happen to Vancouver this season time will tell but a hot streak can last an entire season and then turn to mush afterwards which by the metrics is due to happen to Vancouver at some point it just might not be this season.
