The Hurricanes clinched today, so if Columbus wins tomorrow against the Rangers, Montreal is officially eliminated.

If the Avs pick up a point tonight, the Coyotes are officially eliminated. So far it's 2-1 Winnipeg over the Avs heading into the 3rd, and the Coyotes are tied 1-1 against Vegas after one period.

I've never seen the media got nuts on a Patrick Kane backcheck before, it was like it's a brand new thing no ones ever seen. "Look at that backcheck...amazing backcheck... look at the speed to slow the player down" blah, blah blah.

At least the Kings took the Coyotes down with them. Not that a team with 29 wins and 34 losses in regulation should be making the playoffs anyway. The only reason the Coyotes were alive this long is the Avs completely sucked in OT this year.

It's pretty weird that this year you could make the playoffs with under 90 points.Usually it's 94-97 points gets you in. The west just sucked this year.

Lol, if I was the Coyotes, I'd be super pissed, lose playoff spot to a team with less regulation wins. Lame.

The Avs have more wins and fewer losses in regulation than the Coyotes do. The only 8 teams in the West that have a positive W/L ratio in regulation are in the playoffs.

After 81 games, Avs have 38 regulation wins. Coyotes, if they win tonight's game, will have 39.

Colorado has 33, and Arizona has 29. Maybe 30 in a few minutes, but they will finish with fewer either way. Total wins, yes, Arizona may soon have more, but wins in OT and the SO are very random. As we saw with the Kings in 16-17, when they led the league with 12 wins in OT, but missed the playoffs by 8 points. The Avs are above .500 in the first 60 minutes of a game, and the Coyotes are below .500 in the first 60. The correct team is in the playoffs.

I've been a huge proponent of the 3-2-1 points system. Another system which I actually like more is:
Win: 2 points
OT/Shootout win: 2 points
OT loss: 0 points
Loss: 0 points
ROW first tiebreaker
SOW or SOL act as a secondary tiebreaker.

My biggest beef with the current system is that not all regulation games are worth the same amount of points.

Ah whoops, I was looking at total wins, not sure why I thought those were regulation only.

An OT loss is already worth 0 points. Teams have that point before OT starts. That extra point people incorrectly call a loser point is actually a winner point, because teams get it for winning in OT or the SO.

The problem with keeping regulation and OT wins in the same category is that 3v3 for 5 minutes is so different than normal game conditions for 60 minutes. At the very least, regulation wins by themselves should be the first tiebreaker. There should be no ROW column. It was bad when OT was 4v4, let alone now.

Good teams will still be good, average ones will still be average, and bad teams will still be bad. If your season comes down to "loser points", then you haven't done enough in the first 60 minutes of hockey, regardless of what the point system is.

Like I said, that's the league's fault for putting those wins into one category. Which I'm sure is why they do it, it makes the standings look more impressive, but they really are two different kinds of wins today. ROW's are sort of an optical illusion.

The Kings sure do miss him and his leadership. I hope the Hurricanes go on a deep playoff run, but it won’t be an easy one.

What he has, that high degree of leadership, can't be taught. It's in his blood. He's been amazing all year. His 5 GWG s were Top 3 in the NHL since Jan, during a critical time when that team needed every point. 23 goals this year and he earned most of them the hard way. Guy gives it all on every shift, impact shifts, leading by example (and vocal in the room) .
He averages almost 18 min a game. I love what he's done for the Canes, he's a huge part of their success . Class act all the way.

Hope he signs for at least 0ne more year. Because I think they will address they goal tending situation over the summer and will be a dangerous team next year.

True but 7 of the eight worst teams are in the East
So there is enough suckage to go around

He was here in 14-15, and they couldn't beat a pre-McDavid Oilers team to give themselves a chance. Williams is Williams, but eh. The run was over even while he was here. He was here when they were getting their asses handed to them in SJ in 2014 too.

Williams is old news. Time to let go.

If New jersey wins the lottery how many lottery wins will that have been by a team Hall is on?

He's going into the last year on this contract. And I wonder (given some rumors) if he's going to move on. I would if I were him. He's a good center, good leader. And there are teams that could use both that are closer to being a team that is a contender.
