It's just that it seemed he would be worth more to Ottawa than what Dallas traded for him.

Apparently not.

He's got a NTC. Maybe he's just following a former teammate down to Dallas. The no tax thing with a $4.9m contract for 2 years. Other teams that might have looked at him may have other guys they need to sign and can't take on that money.

The Alex Radulov camp has heard form 10-11 teams so far. Not planning site visits at this point; still want to keep Montreal in the mix, too

Negotiation ploy, I don't think he wants to leave Montreal.

30 Thoughts: What is the trade value of a first-round pick?

4. Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion had a lengthy conversation with Los Angeles compatriot Rob Blake during the later rounds of the draft. There is one move that could make sense for both sides: Dustin Brown for Dion Phaneuf. Both have the same cash remaining  $25.5 million. Brown’s AAV is lower ($5.875 million to Phaneuf’s $7 million), but he has five years left on his contract to Phaneuf’s four. The Senator defenceman can go to Los Angeles, but I’m not sure if Brown’s list allows him to go to the Canadian capital.

I don't hate Dion. The one less year is nice.

Damn Calgary got Foo. If Smith can be good and Gaudreau can grow a pair then they're going to be able to do some serious damage in the playoffs.

They're locking up a generational player through his most productive and prime years. It's a ton of money but it's still worth it.

Doughty will probably match that in a couple of years.

Yeeeeouch!!

That contract shouldn't be a surprise, it's the way of the NHL. The CAP goes up, for an elite player, it's based on a % of that. Doughty's will be too. Same reaction when Crosby and malkin's contracts, which at the time were 15.3% . NObody should have expected it to be less than something in that range.

Did some math. Crosby/Malkin 2nd deals: 15.3% of cap. If cap is flat in 2018-19, McDavid at 17.6. But should be movement to keep in line.

Just crazy to actually see it.

Delusional Edmonton fans were claiming he'd sign for under $10 million because he doesn't want to hurt the team.

It is for sure, that never changes. Ovie was 19% in 2008 at 9.5 and I thought I'd seen it all.

And those T and C's, that situation will be a conversation in a lot of new contracts, esp the big ticket ones

Replying to @PierreVLeBrun

One of the details likely still being discussed is how to handle the potential lockout season of 2020-21 within the deal... (signing bonus?)
