He's still a 40-ish point player.

I haven't read this thread much or really seen why they bought him out. I'm guessing he was more of a Maloney guy and with Maloney outta there and a new regime in, they wanted to go in a different direction.

Vermette was our worst foward for a good part of the season. He has lost 2 or 3 steps in the last year or so and he isn't nearly as good defensively as he once was. Obviously on paper it looks like he had a decent year but most his points came on the power play. He no longer is a solid penalty killer and he was absolutely brutal 5 on 5 before Tangauy came over at the deadline. If Strome or Dvorak comes in and plays up to even half of their potential then we are in a much better position without Vermette. Vermette has declined to a 4th line f/o specialist. Don't let the point totals fool you!

I think we should wait and see what he does this year, before declaring him a 4th liner. Maybe he just had a bad season? It's not hard to believe that he may be declining, He probably is. But it's not like he's ancient and he could have a better season this coming year.

Now keep in mind, I'm not agreeing with or disagreeing with the Coyotes decision to buy him out. I'm not saying they should have gave him the year to see if he would be better. I'm just saying that we need to see just a little bit more before declaring him a 4th liner now.

this is an urban legend at this point. aZ will be above the cap floor despite the dead cap space as they have every single season.

I just read this on the yotes forum...

"With Vermette bought out, #Coyotes salary cap will tentatively sit at $64,152,125, however team will paying LESS than $51M in actual salary"

That would effectively mean they are not at the cap floor without those contracts. Care to verify if right or wrong?

yes, if they only plan on playing 8 forwards

But isn't the rest of the roster going to be ELC's?......Are any big contracts left to sign?
Rieder would make 9 fowards and most likely Strome and Dvorak on ELC's brings it to 11, but that does not sound at all like Coach Tippet to award players a roster spot without earning it. I'm expecting more changes to fill out the roster.

Discarding what you're saying, with Rieder and a couple ELC'S Then they'd probably be 3-4 Million over cap floor. With a trade, maybe 6-7? We'll see how many moves they make I guess.

It depends on how many players that figure counts. I doubt that's for a 23 man roster.

I suspect GMs will now look at how their roster performs in preseason (and possible injuries), then who will be exposed to waivers , and take into consideration the upcoming expansion draft.

It's a cap floor, not a salary floor.

It's about money and what he brings to the team. He is not worth 3.75mill.

With only one year left on his deal he was still decent enough to play, especially on a team like Arizona.

Don't quite understand this

Even though he doesn't fit in the lineup, I'd still love him back on Ottawa.
Seems like he'd be a good 3C on many teams, no?

My guess is they tried to trade him, but any team willing to take him was asking for 50% retention. Instead of trading him to a team he didn't want to play for - they buy him out and let him decide where he wants to go. I also presume they wanted to trade him because he deserves a top-6 role but they couldn't get him one. Could be a "classy" move by Arizona - otherwise I don't get it.

Unfortunately, he is not a top six at this stage of his career.

Oilers need a 3C

Lucic-McDavid-Eberle
Pouliot-RNH-Draisaitl
Maroon-Vermette-Puljujarvi
Hendricks-Letestu-Kassian

Unless Vermette is retiring or something. Weird

That would be the best thing for the Oilers to do. Would create a huge leadership down the middle and mentor McDavid and Drai. Letestu is best on the 4th line. I'd rather Puljujarvi go to the AHL for the season to really develop and dominate the AHL. Then have Yak on that third line. I still believe he can be a great player. He's been working hard this offseason. Something he hasn't really done in the past.
