The off-ice stability of the franchise and its on-ice success will do far more to recruit than any roster player ever could.

Yup, winning will bring more FAs -- and not just any FAs, but the ones who want to play for a winning team.

Being willing to eat money to ice the best roster, for now and the future, will get the right FAs interested.

I don't want to sign a FA who is worried about club loyalty to him when he is no longer valuable to the team. I want to sign FAs who want to win and want to be worth more than their contract.

Even if you're making room for the kids, a veteran presence with defensive reliability is helpful to a young group. A regular spot in the bottom 6, bottom 9 if needed on the wing or center. If there are injuries or a kid show's he's really not play Vermette.

Vermette's defensive prowess has been on a steady decline. He has to beat out two kids that are faster and just flat out better than him, then he has to beat out Hanzal (nope) and Richardson for a center spot. Richardson is a similar player for much cheaper. The depth has caught up enough to where there's no place for 'good guys' to hang around on the roster. You can't play a regular role, you don't play under Dave Tippett.

He's still very good at faceoffs and a great guy in the room. He can go sign with a contender on the cheap, make his buyout money, chase a cup, have a good time.

Coyotes free up a center spot for Dvorak. Richardson can also switch to the wing if Tyler Gaudet or Laurent Dauphin makes the team.

Dvorak

Buying out a guy who showed a lot of loyalty to the franchise will not help Arizona attract free agents.

I don't see why, it's not like a player who is bought out doesn't get paid. In fact, if he signs with someone else he stands to make more money, while being in a potentially better situation.

This is oft repeated about every team in the league--they did X or didn't do Y so they won't be able to attract free agents in the future because of it. I have yet to see any compelling evidence it ever has that impact.

I keep seeing this. Isn't it "cap floor"? I'm fairly certain actual dollars are irrelevant. It's kind of a ***** slap to their fan base, but I'm pretty sure the Coyotes could do nothing else and be fine to start the season since their cap is well above the floor.

*I do realize they will do more. The point is that you have to above the cap floor, and actual dollars spent is irrelevant.*

I was just noting that $50.3M is going towards actual players who are playing. When you add in the Pronger, Datsyuk, Ribiero, and Vermette cap hits, the Coyotes are at $65.6M with only $7M left to the cap. There are 7 teams that have more cap room right now.

What's worse. Vermette situation or Toronto media ripping Kessel's to pieces daily? Any fabricated stories about a hot dog vendor in Pittsburgh?

teams will Bank reputation. Teams that start off with a very strong reputation get forgiven more when they start to make bad choices. Teams that have a very bad reputation can get absolutely destroyed by a single move that shows unusual levels of disrespect.

For example Toronto over the years have had very bad relationships with their veterans and it definitely hurt their ability to use the hometown discount card to their advantage.

When Edmonton decided to go to war with Sheldon souray it definitely makes noise among potential free agents.

When Boston was under the thumb of Harry sinden we always knew that the very top level free agents would avoid coming to Boston because they couldn't get paid and would never get paid.

Detroit always was able to attract many many many unrestricted free agents on discount contracts at the end of their careers because of their wonderful reputation for how they treated these players

The great majority of teams will basically be comparable to one another and it probably won't have a huge effect if they screw up once or twice but some things do stick out and it does affect them both good and bad.

Did he not have any trade value ? No movement ? Just weird for a team that could use a depth vet atleast

I really don't think thats the case. Winning is the red wings allure.

It came up a lot when the Flyers moved Richards and Carter.

I agree . the only X and Y that makes sense is a team need X player . If it the Oilers X = RHPMD . Y = Term as we have McDavid to worry about in the future . Y could also = player to trade we will trade player Y to get player X . Enough of the boring talk .

The Oilers have been bad for how long ? Last year they signed Sekera . UFA best D . This year Lucic arguably the top UFA . Then there the college kids they signed . Schultz also was well sought after . As bad as the Oilers have been player will still sign there . There is only X number of jobs and players have to go where they can get work

There are other factors also. Edmonton is becoming a more popular destination just because of Mcdavid, new arena and new management.

Even if you consider him a pure faceoff specialist, there is room for him in the league. But he can still contribute material offense. I imagine his agent's phone is busy.

Yes I totally expect him to get a few teams requesting his services. Only it should be around 1-1.5 mil 1 year deal for a 4th line face off scecialist that could play well on the 3rd line with the right line mates. Don't get me wrong Vermette could come in and do very well because he might be just coming off a bad year. There is no doubt he has lost a step and although he might surprise some people, we just knew it wouldn't be here at over 3 mill.
