I don’t care about who the club names as the team captain. The room sorts out who the leaders of the team are. I think the Captain is more for the press and public facing elements of the job. I assume the Captain is often the main leader too but if he is appointed by the organization then it might not be locker room leader. Buff was always the team Alfa until he retired (From what I hear).

All hockey rooms have a leadership dynamic despite letters on the uniform. I think last season was a good example, Blake was stripped of the captaincy but it became apparent the team still felt he was the main leader (or captain). He’s gone now so someone will emerge in the room.
I think that is even more reason to give it to Morrissey. He is easily the most well spoken player as well as one of the teams top players in the heart of his prime and under contract for another 5 years. IMO Morrissey will be the next captain unless he declines the offer.

It make sense to me from the outside looking in for the reason’s you listed. Not sure if he is the top leader in the room but one thing is for sure it would mark a return to the old Andrew Ladd stoic captain style where they usually have their emotions under check after the game. Blake took it all so seriously and I think he was great at elements of the captain’s job (tireless volunteer) but one of them wasn’t being able to put on the brave face to the media nightly .

Tatar is still unsigned, I remember a bit of chatter about him and the Jets a while back. He'd kind of fit the mold of guys we've been targeting lately like Nino and Iafallo.

We'll have ~2mil capspace left with Stan and Kup signed - though Chevy did allude to actively shopping one of our D during his FA press conference so that would be some more salary going out - lets say 3.9 with Dillon. If we can pull off that move and bring in another 2nd + asset, we'd be sitting in a pretty good spot to bring in Tatar comfortably under the cap.

Connor - Scheifele - Vilardi
Tatar - Perfetti - Ehlers
Iafallo - Lowry - Nino
Barron - Names - Appleton/Kupari

Morrissey - Demelo
Samberg - Pionk
Heinola - Schmidt

If we suck, we could get a lot of assets at the deadline for our rentals and still ice a decent team after the fact.

I'm rambling a bit here, but if the team looks legit by the deadline and Chevy decides to hold onto an unsigned Mark & Helle, I'm curious how the board feels about going all in ala Columbus a few years back when they traded for Duchene with pending UFAs Bob & Panarin.

We could spend some premium assets (we'd have some extra picks from a Dillon trade) and bring in another Center at the deadline like we did with Stastny & Hayes. I'll use Lindholm as an example for now.

Connor - Scheifele - Vilardi
Tatar - Lindholm - Ehlers
Iafallo - Perfetti - Nino
Barron - Lowry - Names

I'd argue that we'd rival our 2017/2018 team up front. Would be ballsy but it's our last kick at the can with this core, and the argument could be made that we may as well go all in if Chevy decides to keep an unsigned Scheif & Helle at the deadline for one last run.

Rutger, Lambert, Lucius, et al start to trickle in to replace all of the guys leaving in UFA.
Nice lineup... But someone has to sign and trade for Lindholm before the season... he's too rare an asset to make it to TD...

Would be an intriguing trade to swap Scheif for Lindholm - they both actually fill a need with each team... Huberdeau needs someone to score with him and Calgary has no one - Lindholm would be a better mentor for Vilardi than Scheif...

I kind of think if Chevy extends Scheif, he gets the C.
The players should vote for their captains but I don't see TNSE doing that.
I don't see anything wrong with 3 assistant captains (the Bruins did it for years) but I'd let them vote.

I think Morrissey is the most logical choice. A little younger and probably ages well and I’m not sure Lowry will age well. He is already close to being pushed to the 4th line with our added depth since last season’s TDL.
Jomo for me as well.
Wasn’t all that impressed with Lowry siding with Wheeler about Bowman’s push back comments.

The c is irrelevant to fans so not sure why it matters so much.
I wouldn’t say the captain is irrelevant to fans. Several posters are talking about for a couple days now. Hockey captains are a bit iconic as it is the only sport that hands the championship trophy to the captain of the team rather than a grey haired billionaire.

I see Jmo as our next cappy. But I also see Chevy and chipman doing everything they can to keep their poster boy and first ever pick which would include making him cappy and face of the franchise in the sell job for an extension.

JoMo is arguably the teams best and most rounded player. He also is very articulate and good with the media.

He's easily my choice as well but the org will go with Lowry due to his blue collar approach.

My pick for captain would be Morrissey as well but if we re-sign Scheifele i think he will be captain.

I think there is nearly 0 chance Scheifele is made captain. If he were captain material, the pervasive talk about the Jets dressing room would have been far less. Chevy-Chipman have finally figured that out and will put him in the best position to succeed if he stays--which is not with the C.

I agree with Morrissey as the best choice, but would be fine with a Lowry-Morrissey co-captaincy.

Neither was I. I think Lowry should be the next guy to go after Scheifele. I personally think he is also part of the problem in the dressing room.

This is just a blogger website with zero credibility but this is the first time I ve heard of even speculation that Helle actually has current interest is signing long term with the Jets.

Hellebuyck has an interest in signing with the Jets long-term. NHL trade rumors have Hellebuyck asking for a contract extension at $9.5 million AVV and Winnipeg is not committed to signing their star goalie to that ask.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure if he'd come back the Jets would give him what he wants.

He was also dragging the team to wins quite a bit last year which is a sign of a true leader. The most 'put the team on his back' guy for us since Big Buff

I would say Josh is a big part but Hellebucyk is far and away the guy who has carried this team for years on his back.

If you are a player that was never at the top of the roster and you are now late in your career you aren’t going to be made captain no matter how bought in you have been. Morrissey seems most likely to me.
I'd disagree.
I guess we'll wait and see. 35 year old Kyle Okposo was named captain less than a year ago in Buffalo. Not a top line player by any means.

They have a very young team with no obvious candidates yet. We have a player in the top of his prime that marks ever box. We don't need a 1-2 year place holder.

Not sure who you are thinking for the 1-2 year place holder.
I'd name Lowry who has a 3 year deal already and I wouldn't be surprised if he signs for another couple years after that.
Let JoMo play 25 minutes a night and not have to also be the spokesman after most games.

Except JoMo is far and away the best spokesman for the team, as well as being one of the best players and is the most likely to be a top level player for a much longer time period.
