When you are 25 and you have an opportunity to hobnob with the most rich and famous and beautiful people in the world that is what they will focus on.
And when those rich and famous and beautiful people find out he doesn't play for the Rams, or Lakers or Dodgers, they will be like, "You play what, hockey? What is that? Who invited you? You look poor".

At some point it's going to hit them in the pocket book. The Canadian teams for a long time now have been providing a significantly larger proportionate share of revenue then their American counterparts.

Less Canadian team success over the long term is going to translate into less revenue for the players. If I was the league and PA I'd be very concerned about the next national Canadian TV deal. Roger's has lost a bucket load on it and I can't see them getting anything as good. Players may rue shunning Canada for anonymity. It was a contract that largely carried this league while it was making peanuts with NBC.

Look at it this way. Canadian teams make up 21% of total teams but the Canadian national TV deal makes up 40% of total national television revenue. It was 80% prior to the recent American TV deal. That is 1/2 billion dollars per year we are talking about. While it's good to grow the game, you still need a healthy group.of Canadian teams as they still provide a significant amount of total league revenue.

But each individual player will continue with self-interest.

Weather during the season shouldn't be that big a factor for players. All they do is play, practice and travel. When they get an in-season break, they pack up the family and go South for a few days. Wives ideas of a good place to spend winter are likely to be quite different and that will be a big factor.

The relative anonymity is different for each player. Some enjoy the spotlight, some don't. Do any players really enjoy a city where no one cares? Some barely get covered by the media.

Play practice and where you live isn’t trivial. Minus 30 C and having to sweep snow off your vehicle on your way to practice is very different then having your morning coffee sitting on your deck as the sun is rising on a beautiful sunny day. The night life is always much better with nice weather as is most activities away from the game. Weather between seasons doesn’t matter as these guys can be where they want when they aren’t playing. Weather in season is what is important for many.

Your telling me these guys can't afford indoor heated garages?

I guess we should fold up all teams in frigid climates. Can't have these poor little millionars subject to cold weather. They ay a winter sport for f*** sakes amd most grew up playing hockey in cold climates.

Player A - 25 yo; AHL (age 20-22) 127gm, 27g, 38a, 65pts [0.51ppg]; (age 21-25) 198gm, 29g, 25a, 54pts [0.27ppg]

Player B - 23 yo; AHL (age 20-23) 85gm, 22g, 24a, 46pts [0.54ppg]; NHL (age 21-23) 130gm, 9g, 20a, 29pts [0.22ppg]

Player C - 26yo; AHL (age 20-23) 150gm, 26g, 53a, 79pts [0.53 ppg].; NHL (age 23-25) 154gm, 13g, 14a, 27pts [0.18ppg]; AHL return (age 25) 44gm, 25g, 25a, 50pts [1.1ppg]

I did this comparison mostly for myself. I'm not sure how much to take away from it except that the players had pretty similar AHL development years. The NHL years probably have more context around usage. Player A is frequently mentioned as part-return for a Jet in trade. Player B and C are Jets. too many clues. Have fun!

Yea I don’t get it. He has ongoing health issues, plays a rugged game, heading into his 30’s??

You want to talk about an owner getting involved in a deal well that is likely one. Its an ok deal in the short term only if he stays healthy and I suppose when Ovi retires the Caps can rebuild and try to trade him or more likely just buy him out or dump him on LTIR

I think these guys can afford a house with a garage. They hardly need to set foot outside in winter if they don't want to. We get maybe 10-15 -30C or colder days a year. Odds are they miss half of those on the road. The horrors of a prairie winter get soooo exaggerated here. Not that they are not real, I'm no fan of winter, but it gets overstated.

Do we really want a player like Gudas whose choice of Anaheim over ANY Canadian city marks him as a guy who only cares about the money? Anaheim will not be a winner in his time there. When he retires, no one in Anaheim will remember his name or that he was ever there. But he will have collected his millions while living the good (soft) life.

They have families and home stands etc etc. Vilardi's girlfriend, by his own admission, was not thrilled about coming here. We've heard rumours of various levels of veracity that other players SOs haven't liked it.

Sweep snow off their vehicles on the way to practice?
The boys are going to either own or rent a place with a garage, they can afford that even with even entry level contracts. I would guess most have heated/climate controlled garages as well....at least I would.

I can't speak for the practice facilities, if they have indoor parking...but I imagine there would be for most NHL teams, because the inverse is true as well...Could you imagine going out to your Audi R8/BMW M6 that is sitting in the parking lot in the southern states heat?

That's a bad contract... like way beyond Wheeler bad - Wilson hasn't been healthy for a while now and a power forward falls apart around age 33-34 at best

At best?
Ovi, Jagr, Howe, Iginla, just off the top of my head.

….and their significant others.

I suspect those others are more significant in this context than the players are.

It’s funny what people focus on. Like indoor parking makes a Winnipeg winter go away. Maybe Chevy pushes the indoor parking angle when he is trying to land players. Don’t worry a Winnipeg winter is very pleasant once you have indoor parking.

Yea Ovi and the owner got their cup. They are not a contender anymore so I guess it really doesn’t matter all that much.

Huh? Quoting elite stars to compare as power forwards is a bit strange... Gordie Howe - I mean seriously...

I'd say Lucic, Perry, Wheeler, Coleman are realistic comparisons to Wilson... all guys I want on my team in the playoffs but not at $7m per season

Sorry, I didn't understand. When you said power forwards you meant power forwards who are not quite that good.

The players I named were/are all power forwards. Outstanding ones. They lasted well past your age range.

On average, better players last longer whether they be power forwards or any other type. Lesser players have shorter careers. So you can cherry pick any group who flamed out at 33(ish) and use them to prove your point. I can cherry pick any group who lasted longer to prove mine.

I don't agree with your initial statement. If you simply said that players comparable to Wilson fall apart around 33-34 it would be a different story. It may be that he projects to fall apart at that age, but it is not because he is a power forward. It is because he is a player at that level of all around competence that tends to go at about that age.
