Agreed on Tanev. IMO he would be the perfect add for us. Adds a more physical element which will be needed in the playoffs. We have also been extremely fortunate with injuries so far so he gives us the ability to guard against being really exposed if we need to go a couple players deep on the depth chart. I think getting a player like that also allows for some rest down the stretch as our top 7 D could spell each other off to heal minor injuries and not get worn down. It also puts Stanley 1 step farther away from the starting lineup and Heinola can get the reps on the Moose in case he is needed down the line.
i don't think anyone really considers c.tanev an opposing physical presence out there.

Dillon - Tanev would be a bitch of a pair to play against

He isn't quite where Dillon is, but he is more physical then the rest of our starting D.
not sure many would agree with that, unless you're considering physical getting hit by pucks or the opposition lol.

Who is more physical? Maybe Samberg but he is not really a banger either. Tanev will go into the dirty areas all of the time and certainly is willing to block shots.

Morrissey-DeMelo
Dillon-Tanev
Samberg-Pionk

Couple that with the depth of the four lines Bones can roll after the Monahan deal. Yeah, I like the sounds of that.

Lots of potential match-up problems for the opposition with balance alone.
I really would like whatever pairing berg is on to be the second pair as I think he is better than Dillion.
Jomo
Berg
Dillion.

If that ended up being our defensive lineup, the usage would be very close to the same for every pair that didn't have Morrissey on it. If we did pick up Tanev, I'd guess Bones would leave Dillon and Pionk together and pair Tanev with Samberg. Much less disruption that way. Also would allow Samberg to show his offensive chops a little more.

The jets must really be going all in trading a 1st for a player with no future potential.
I don’t think tanev is that good enough to make a sizeable difference. Our 1 big advantage against all playoff teams is our goaltending.
What gives Monahan no future potential? The Jets are going to put him in a spot to have success and if he does why wouldn’t they offer him a short contract?
Perfetti’s cup of coffee at 2C tells me they aren’t comfortable with inexperience at that position.

He has been known to struggle to stay healthy.

If he does well then I can see them trying to retain him, but we will likely have to move someone else out to make the cap work. If he scores 60 points this year he'll get 5 million from someone.

Not an attack on you, but it's funny how recency bias comes into play. Historically speaking he has stayed healthy except the past few seasons, and this year he's been fine

I had the exact same initial feeling as you but I've really warmed up to it.

I was having exactly the same feeling of inevitability that I had with the '16 draft. Please don't be Stanley, please don't be Stanley. This time it was please don't be Monahan, please don't be Monahan. I really hope it turns out better this time.

His advanced stats are relentlessly bad, and yet the pros seem to like him. I am actually cautiously optimistic (very cautiously). Perfetti and Ehlers are both at least decent defensively, maybe they can carry him. Maybe he can set them up for some scoring. Time will tell.

Monahan is having a nice resurgence points wise this year but his best days are behind him, I think from the Jets point of view his acquisition is a pure rental.
I think it is way too early to have any type of accurate appraisal on this. The guy is only 29 and if his injury problems are behind him, none of us have a hot clue what happens going forward.

perhaps all? think you're underestimating the Jets D group a bit. they have 413 hits registered, that's 3rd among NHL D-groups. Tanev would be only ahead of Chisholm & Stanley.

not saying he's bad at all, or soft for that matter. but a physical-type of defender i don't think is a proper characterization.

if he fits well and helps elevates the 2nd line to a similar level like stastny in 17-18, id be down for a nino-style contract for him... 2-3 years at 3-4M. given his recent injury history and the procedures he's had (seriously guy is a walking Operation board) don't know if they should go much longer on him.

He signed a show me contract with the Canadiens and he has done pretty well this season, I think he will be looking to cash in and I would prefer the Jets to let him cash in elsewhere.

what is cash in to you?
i don't see him getting 5+ years for example, but could be wrong.

I will be first to say this...I gave up on Chevy and the jets last year. They were just so meh to watch and Chevy stood idly by and did nothing during the after xmas free fall.

But my goodness how he handled the off season and getting rid of the two dressing room issues in Wheeler and Dubois is unreal.

Now adding a good experienced guy like Monahan without losing a prospect or a current roster player is amazing.

LOOK at what Vancouver gave up for Lindholm, stats wise a pretty similar player.

Chevy has changed the room and proven his worth, and its not even near the deadline yet. More moves to bolster the roster for a deep playoff run will come.

I was looking over some of the charts again myself.

Two years ago, Monahan was above average defensively and his offense and finishing were shit.

Last year, his defense was average, his offense was average and his finishing was horrible.

This year, his offense is above average, his finishing is average and his defense looks really bad.

It's so all over the place, it honestly looks like we have a guy who will be a product of his environment. At least he will have some good wingers and a good structured team around him

Have to wonder if Jets might be interested still in Morgan Frost. After next year, 2C is still a big question mark. Seems like Philly are listening on most.
