I just don't understand why it's a big deal. Matthews likely knows Vesey quite well, and was brought along to sit in on the interviewer. The horror.

I guess people aren't over the fact Toronto landed Matthews, and don't like seeing his name.

That last line probably isn't it, in fact it most likely isn't.

Congrats. They landed a player who had no choice but to go there, unless he wanted to hold out for several years

It's been reported that the signing took about 10 minutes...Lou gave him the max deal with zero negotiation. I know it's cool to bash the Leafs, but Mathews can probably speak pretty well about how Leafs management treats it's young players/prospects.

No he can't, the guy has been a part of the Leafs for less than a summer. He can't speak to anything

The Oilers are sending Yakupov to talk to Vesey.
Rumor is, Edmonton hopes he gets lost and doesn't come back.

Habs are sending Desharnais for the same reason.

I loled.

But the government stepped in to make sure Desharnais doesn't get lost and sent some OQLF officers with him

The selling point IS Matthews and Toronto. Matthews isn't selling anyone on Toronto, as people have said, he's very new here.

If Gretzky was on your team, he's one of the things you're selling, regardless of if he's doing the selling himself.

Hawks can sell a potential cup soon. Other teams can sell their city and their top players just like the leafs will do.

So, they didn't meet him prior to the draft? They didn't talk to him during the combine? They haven't spoken a word to him since drafting him?

He has dealt with the organization through the whole drafting/ELC negotiating process...you don't think he can lend an opinion on how the organization treats young players?

Edit: And what was the purpose of having guys like Gretzky/Messier talk to Schultz at the time...to tell him how great the team was 30 years ago?

I don't get why everybody is making a big deal about this, Mathews is one of the selling points for TO...just like Toews/Crosby etc are for their teams.

I think he can. He can speak to how impressed he is with the front office. Or the coaching staff. Or the training facilities. Or the young talent in the pipeline. or how he sees the Leafs future. Or....... He surely can speak to somethings on the Leafs, even if it is based on a limited experience.

Any team in the Leafs situation would likely do the same thing and bring along the guy who is likely their franchise player down the road. Much ado about nothing IMO.

Don't forget to continue the phrase: "so you'll get your 6M/year in some other club".

I bet he'll be upset so much after this, so he chooses to go to the KHL...

Based on all the Justin Schultz/bust talk, Vesey will only be worth $1 mil after his first contract anyway...

I think Vesey made a huge mistake not signing with the Preds but that said, he is exercising his rights under the current CBA.

I understand the bitterness of Preds fans but some of that has gone over the top.

With everything I have read I can't see him NOT signing with the Bruins.

His boyhood team, from the area and even though they don't have the same group of prospects as Buffalo his dream can be realized now.

As a Leafs fan I'd love to get him here but the taxes he'll pay are more than he would in Mass. If he signs and gets the max of 2.5 million he pays $230,000 more in Toronto. With Rangers he'll pay $177,000 more, with Buffalo $71,000 more and Chicago he actually will pay $34,000 less.

But the lure of playing for the team he cheered for growing up is the driving force for why he decided to go to free agency......and really I can't blame him for that.

The rumours of Montreal are ridiculous, no way he signs there. He'd be paying almost a quarter million more in taxes.

Buffalo told Eichel to court him.
What is silly about bringing a potential teammate (linemate) Gives them the opportunity to talk normally, less tense - potentially clears a little air and has someone talk to him as a player/former US team/etc ; than just hearing old suits talking all the time.

Don't understand why it's a problem, even if Matthews is very new to the team.

How genuine is it going to come off if they have a guy who has never lived or played in Toronto and has only been a part of the team for a few days of rookie development camp selling the merits of playing for Toronto? I think that's why people questioned it.

They probably didn't bring Matthews for that reason alone though.

I will be pissed if he ends up in Toronto after enduring years of Lou being an incompetent ***** with handling contracts for NJ.

A player with no NHL experience out of Switzerland and a franchise with no history of winning? Good luck with that.

I think Chicago and Boston must be grinning from ear to ear.

I get that we haven't been great recently, but the bolded is wrong.

I still feel it's a forgone conclusion. He's going to Boston. His agent probably told him to go through the process so he doesn't come off as not exercising his options. His agent probably knows or has good relationships with a lot of teams, just show casing his client and just adhering to some GM's requests

He left Nashville for one thing and one thing only, to play for the team he loves. Nashville isn't exactly a booney land and is a very competitive hockey team.

What if to start Vesey just wanted to finish his degree at Harvard. (read that players tribune article)
but then Nashville was in the playoffs and put the pressure on him to leave early. maybe too much pressure?
and Vesey didn't like that
So that's why he exercised his right. I don't think he was planning to not sign with Nashville the entire time. They may have pushed his buttons a little and he said screw you
