I'm not sure DSP stays on that second line there.

I figured they would use that line as a defensively responsible second line that can play against top lines and still contribute offensively, also based loosely on DSP's success with team in small sample he had

TT wasn't developing the way the Hawks liked. Plain and simple. He's not as good as people make him out to be. Never developed into what everyone expected of him.

In fairness, he is 21 years old, and has 1.5 NHL and 0.5 AHL seasons under is belt. I can understand that the Hawks may not have liked how he was progressing and that's fine and a good reason to part ways if that's the case.

But did people really expect that a slight guy selected 18th overall would be lighting it up 1.5 years into his NHL career? 13G, 35 points seems to be decent for a guy in his first full NHL season, that is the 8th forward on his team for PP TOI/GP, 7th forward on his team for ES TOI/GP, who's most common linemates ES were Desjardins and Kruger, who started in the D zone 43% of the time, was a positive possession player and went against decent competition.

I didn't get to see a whole lot of him so I'm curious what the expectations were given those parameters?

But really what has he done other than exercise his right, as given to him through the CBA, to test free agency? I haven't seen anything coming directly from him that makes him seem like an "entitled dbag." All the hype, all the talk and discussion points have been manifested by the media and fans. Vesey just wanted to go to free agency to see his options.

Would be better for him to go to an organization that can afford to sign him to a second contract in two years.

Vesey has gone to all this trouble in order to have the freedom to choose where he plays.

Why would he go to a team that's already Cap-strapped and that will likely have to trade his RFA rights (to god knows where) in two years when his rookie contract is up?

Valid point.. but Chicago always seems to find a way usually.

I dont have a dog in this race so I dont really care what mr. vesey does .

I am surprised though that after 2 lockouts the college loophole route hasnt been closed .

Agreed but more so that the team gets something to lessen the blow.

People forget that these college players are forgoing an NHL contract while waiting for free agency. Vesey is 23. If he had chosen to sign with Nashville at 21, is there any doubt he would have been in the NHL by now? If he had signed at 20, he would be signing his 2nd contract right now instead of his first. He left a significant amount of money on the table for the right to choose where he plays. There's nothing wrong with that. It's a negotiated part of the CBA. Any attempt to change it by the NHL would be met with opposition by the NHLPA.

One of the better points of the thread. He gave up money to have this choice.

If Bennett is healthy, he's probably the 2nd line RW, DSP goes to the 4th with Fiddler and Kalinin. Blandisi starts in the AHL or is traded, Josefson is depth, and Elias is (sadly) not re-signed.

In the scenario that Vesey signs with the NJ it appears that the devils will have a log jam and a half of top 9 wingers, with this being said who would be the odd man out of a position and thus most likely to be on the move?

My projected Lines (w/ Vesey)

Palmieri-Henrique-Hall
Vesey-Zajac-D.S.P
Cammalerri-Zacha-Boucher

Remaining players: Blandisi, Kalinin, Beau Bennett, Vernon Fiddler, Josefson, (Elias?)

*Which three do you think fill out 4th line, who do you think becomes available via trade?

Probably second line winger on their farm team.

You don't like him because you're jealous? He's better at his job than you are? He has the skills and works in an industry that allows him to have options?

I guess that's a good reason.

Hall - Henrique - DSP/Bennett
Cammy - Zajac - Palmieri
Boucher - Zacha - DSP/Bennett
Kalinin - Fiddler/Josefson - Pietila

Adding Vesey makes things muddled. I imagine one of Cammy or Boucher (or Vesey) will bump up to RW and Pietila will be sent down. DSP and Bennett will be 3rd/4th line.

Most of us didn't go to Harvard, and have multiple NHL teams lining up to sign us though. Vesey has options, that's all this whole thing has been about.

Why don't you just wait a few days and see where he signs first?

You're only saying that because you're so sure he signs with the Rangers. While he might, there's a pretty good chance he doesn't.

Put yourself in his shoes.

You have an opportunity to play college hockey for Harvard. You also have an opportunity to graduate with a college degree from HARVARD. You choose to exercise your natural born right to stay in school and get a degree.

Now you're done with your college career and due to the RULES set in place for NCAA players, you have the RIGHT to become a free agent and select which team you would like to play for, based on the talent you possess.

Yeah, what an entitled dbag. Had a Harvard degree handed to him and an NHL career waiting for him without having to put in an ounce of effort.

You're right, the kid doesn't recognize luxury...because he hasn't experienced it. He's been busy busting his butt to become the best hockey player he can AND earn a degree from Harvard.

If you actually spent the time to read interviews with and of him, you'd clearly see that he is widely considered a great kid with a great work ethic.

Why temper the expectations of people like Flyline? It's much more hilarious when Vesey signs with someone else.

whoever he signs with will be getting a good nhl player with the potential to get 50 pts on day. He is very sought after even though i don't think he is as good as advertised. Hoping if the leafs miss him he goes to either the rags or pens. Both teams would be good fit and the rags could use the youth while the pens are (all things considered) the best landing spot for him in terms of ability to win, get paid on 2nd deal, get resigned by pens, get a big role, score a crap ton of pts with sid or geno, and play/live in a nice city which is kind of close to his hometown. Hoping he comes to toronto, but those two other teams are places where i'd like to see vesey play if he isn't signing here.

Although I agree with your whole argument that players should have to play for the team that drafts them, your bolded comment is not true. Nashville drafted him in the third round and was compensated with a third round pick from Buffalo. They got back about the same as what they paid for him. Anaheim, on the other hand, lost Schultz for absolutely nothing. I don't think they should have the option of not signing with the team that drafts them. They should have to honor at least their ELC years, if nothing else.

While they did get a third round pick back, it's well below what Vesey is worth right now IMO. The odds of drafting a player as good as Vesey has progressed to this point, is against the odds. But it is also very possible they can get someone better so only time will tell.

Well said. You'd think by the reactions he's getting that he pulled a Lindros here. Social media breeds hatred now more than ever and this kid deserves none of it because he's handled it like a pro and done nothing other than exercise his rights set out by the CBA. If he becomes a regular middle six 40 point scorer that's fantastic, but most people on here will probably consider that a failure because of the hype he's been getting.

Kid gave up the option to sign an NHL contract in past years, giving up a few million dollars because he was dedicated to his college team.

I don't see what to hate about that. It screams of integrity to me....
