It's much easier rooting for a bottom dwelling team, I don't blame you.
I think it's the directionality that makes a rebuilding team easier to follow. It's the progression of a tear down, accumulation and step by step progress towards something, with a high volume of change that can be exciting, hopeful. (Although I'm sure Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa and Montreal might have a thing or two to say about that). The Leafs have plateaued and we are looking at incremental growth among our core, supplemented by good smaller roster changes year to year. And the incremental growth on the core guys is not encouraging.
