The reality is, we're probably not making the playoffs and we're probably not finishing as low as some people would like.

I've said from the beginning we're probably picking around where we did last year.

That's fine. At some point, your front office is responsible for the core of the team, not where you pick.

Individual accomplishments don't mean anything. The point is that for the Rangers it would still give them a player they desperately need. If they miss out on Hughes, but still draft in the top-5, it gives them a player they wouldn't be able to draft if they finish the season with a better record.
I actually am highly interested in what picks 2, 4 and 5 will be

So you’re saying they would rather have Eichel than McDavid? Gotcha

It isn't as if this is an awful draft either. I don't really know if anyone has the potential to be a real franchise player for us though, or who would, to word it better. Of course with the 1OA you have the best chance to find one, but still

This narrative needs to die. It's time to grow up and become in touch with reality. Bad teams eventually win because they get the best players in the draft.

Theres more than one way to do it but you need youth to be present and a major piece in it. I mean if we could land Panarin in the short term is as good as a lottery pick and might be better depending on where you land in the lottery. I agree you must rebuild but if you dont get a high pick you can as a team in the new york area acquire players in other ways. Also,I'd prefer the team learn to win than to do an Edmonton or Buffalo and seemingly get so accustomed to losing it becomes a part of the teams DNA so I'm against a tank but pro rebuild, the rebuild is easier if you bottom out but it's not guaranteed either. The other problem is that if you are indeed looking at Panarin joining this team he is gonna wanna see a light at the end or the tunnel, hes not joining a dumpster fire of a team.

I could see the argument if we hadn't drafted a franchise center in awhile.

We've never drafted a franchise center. There's no excuse for that.

And to be completely honest, picks like Lias Andersson aren't even giving us a chance at it.

That's our highest pick since 2004. We got a player with a second line ceiling if everything goes perfectly.

No, it isn't as good as getting a lottery pick. A lottery pick produces for your team on an ELC and is not in the middle-end of their prime when you acquire them. You don't rebuild in free agency - that's not a thing. You rebuild through the draft. Stop with the comparisons to Edmonton and Buffalo. They are bad because they have bad management and have had bad management consistently. It has nothing to do with "tanking" and everything to do with how they decided to rebuild. Buffalo hit free agency so many times during their rebuild and failed every time - that's a lot more of the same thing that you are suggesting than it is what I am suggesting. Edmonton has only had bad GMs for however many years.

People keep saying this, that there are other ways to do it. It's funny that the only teams that have won since the lockout has all been VERY BAD at some point for quite some time and acquired at least 1 top 5 pick, and that at least 1 top 5 pick was in every cup winning team since the beginning of the lockout, except for Detroit, who had 2 #1 centers they drafted in round 7 and one of the greatest defenseman of all time - not exactly anything that can be replicated with ease.

This team has been around for almost 100 years and has 4 cups. not once have they tried to build a team by being very bad, and yet plenty of teams younger than us have more cups because they have. Why not try it?

You know I'm not arguing against a high pick, right

Drafting in no man's land for as long as we have is pretty much cancer

Speaking of which, you guys remember when we had a franchise center for two months in 2016 and AV played him at RW on the third line?

That hire cost us a Cup and set our future back.

Do some more research.

They really haven't went after many FAs in their elongated rebuild.

That franchise center also had 33 points in 63 games that same year with Carolina.

That's the same old excuse.

Kuznetsov, Giroux, Kopitar, Barzal, Bergeron, Point, and Getzlaf were drafted in no man's land.
Yeah but that's what I mean. That's a..smallish amount with more coming I'm sure, but I feel like we've been doing it for almost half of my life and have not yielded a Bergy

It was never off.

Playoff pals will be back in full effect once they smoke Ottawa, but some of us saw beyond the smoke and mirrors.

What smoke and mirrors? We are not a playoff team but we are also not bottom-3. We are bad but we are not bad enough. Watch us draft 7th or 8th.

Because this is the worst franchise in the NHL at drafting centers. We need to stop doing that.

And that's why Im not fixated about where we pick like so many on here. Gorton has done a good job so far with the re build. Add guys like Shesty, Hajek, Kravtsov, Miller, Lundkvist, etc plus probably 2 or more 1st rounders this year, to an already nice group of young players and the future is bright in Rangerland.
