Nobody is in the mix. They basically already know who is going to be on the opening night roster. Camp can get someone in higher consideration for a call up. Signing another forward pushes one of Olofsson or Meyers off the roster. Meyers has waiver exemption for 10 games but is on a one way and Olofsson is not but is on a two way. If there’s any competition it’s between them.

It's early August TV. They don't know who's making the opening night roster. Pavel could easily beat out Meyers for 4C. They didn't sign him out of college with just the Eagles in mind.

You know Bednar wants his guys to earn spots too, especially the role players.

Doesn't matter what your name is, if you play the way he wants, and someone else doesn't, you're getting the spot to start the season and they aren't.

Not to mention injuries giving guys expected to start in the AHL a chance if they have a great camp. Even if it's a level they can't sustain. Buys the team a little time to look for a trade or waiver pickup that the Avs are very good at instead of making a desperation move.

Meyers salary is fully buryable in the minors too. I kinda expect him to be traded in a swap for a similar young player/prospect if he's not working out again early though.

It’s not an open tryout, they know what they want their lineup to look like. I’m sure everyone will get a look and we’ll see if any of it will be longer than 3 games

Obviously Nate isn't getting cut cause of a bad camp. But I think Olofsson is one a two way contract for a reason, his spot is not secure.

The Avs will prioritize guys they think they might lose if waivers is an option (Sedlak last year is a prime example). They also tend to defer to youth if there isn't a fear of waivers. The youth do have to impress in early games or they get sent down rather quickly.

I don't think Brennan is correct in that assessment.

I think Meyers will be competing with Pavel and Foudy for that spot in camp, with Cal Burke and Chris Wagner in the mix as well, and they won't have any problems sending down Meyers if they have to like they did last year. They have Cogs as a possible option at 4C if needed too.

Ben is going to have to earn his spot just like the other young players and prospects. I expect Pavel to be his main competition.

There's a reason the Avs signed Pavel out of college and gave him a look for a few games with the Eagles. He's also got a size and strength advantage on Meyers, and he's been a good PK'er and faceoff guy in his career. All of which are traits you want in a 4C.

Yeah, I think they'll go with whoever earns it. They've given Meyers enough rope already without success that I doubt they are penciling him in.

Meyers is now 24. If he doesn't make the team out of camp, I am not concerned about losing him to waivers. If he's not good enough at 24, he's probably not really ever going to be good enough. It's kind of now or never for Ben.

Meyers is exempt, so he can go up and down freely.
He’s exempt until he plays in 10 more NHL games. So it is something to consider.

I know everyone thinks their tweeners are claim risks but considering every team wanted to sign him or some such I could see someone that was highly interested take that chance and he’s making league minimum. Would it be a huge loss, no but I do think it’s something the Avs are going to think about. I’d personally have him play the fall in the AHL and then come up later when the injury plague hits. I think he could use a bit more seasoning plus I don’t think it’s ideal if he sticks around all year just because his exemption threshold was burned right away.

You are correct, I forgot that detail.

I agree with the analysis. It would be great if we could sign another cheap vet C in the Helm mold so that Meyers can be pushed to the AHL.

Not only league minimum, but only 1 year deal.

A shitty team will certainly take a flyer on him if they get a chance. They could claim him and give him real minutes and live with any lack of production or mistakes he makes to see if he is worth keeping around long term.

We don't have that same level of freedom with our window. It's either show me something immediately or get the f*** out of the way.

If that was true they would have already moved on from him, instead he’s penciled in as 4C lol
I am referring more to a shitty team giving him third- and second-line minutes to see what he turns into, and we can't afford to wait on that.

I doubt we have any issues sticking him on the 4th line, if he doesn't grow from there, he's just a 4th liner, but they are not going to rotate him into middle 6 regularly if he doesn't show something immediately.

Wasn’t sure where to put this but today is the last day to sign Stienburg. Saw CalFriendly’s tweet aboht the guys that are out there. Not a whole lot IMO. But they did disrespect the hell out of the Eagles 4C this year and left Stienburg off the list.

Cap Friendly is going off the guys who have used all of their college eligibility, Stienburg hasn't (IIRC he has two years left with the Covid year).

As I understand it, the Avs have until 3PM MST to sign Stienburg since he's declared he's done with college. I've heard a sticking point in negotiations is guaranteed NHL games as an under the table promise (ala Ranta). If he signs, it wouldn't shock me to see him get 5 or 10 games to start the season on the NHL roster.

There are rumblings that the Avs are going to try to sign at least one who will be a free agent this afternoon.

Ah ok thank you for the info. I mean he seems to have the physical tools and skating. But think we’re not looking at like any offense. But his work ethic, physicality should be enough for Bednar to not hate his guts. I’m not sure about his hockey IQ or defensive abilities. Wonder who the Avs would be looking at. I went back and screenshotted the guys who need contracts.

Personally, I don't think Stienburg really has enough to be a full time NHLer. If he does, it'll be in a 4th line energy sort of role. I'm not terribly concerned either way with him. I don't really like teams making those promises as a rule of thumb... but the risk of another Aman situation looms. Avs don't have enough depth to squander those who could actually play. As long as it isn't a full season sort of promise, there are worse things... but I also don't think the Avs would be losing out on a 200 game NHLer either.

What CapFriendly doesn't account for (and it is kinda impossible for them to track) are the guys who graduate but haven't used all their eligibility as August 15th guys. Stienburg falls into that camp.

Hello Jay O'Brien welcome to Colorado

The deadline has come and passed... maybe news trickles in, but rights have likely lapsed.

CF should know he’s not going back to school because he played in the AHL already. But we aren’t the Leafs or Habs who get everyone on the reserve list double and triple checked.

Stienburg’s dad probably got him another deal or else why would the deadline be relevant at all.

Play in the AHL isn’t specifically relevant to the August 15th date this year as Stienburg also has to have graduated for the date to hold. Otherwise it would be next summer when his eligibility would have lapsed (excluding the covid year that he could opt for or not).

In other words CF has to know his graduation status and track that for all teams that fall to this quirk in the rule.

Stienburg officially off the reserve list. I'd say odds are high he won't get signed by the Avs at this point, but technically, all that lapsed was exclusive rights so he can still be signed. Rangers were very high on Stienburg in his draft year, so that is one place to watch (though they are deeper than the Avs so the path is more difficult to the NHL). Dallas is another team I'd expect to sniff around.
