If Pavel could solidify himself as a responsible 4C I’d be pretty happy with that. Would give us the opportunity to let Cogs teach both him and Meyers how to play the right way. If not changes are made to the lineup I could see us running bottom 6 lines of:

Wood-Colton-LOC
Cogs-Pavel-Meyers

Not a ton of offensive punch, but if they can play tenacious, wear down opponents and break even on the scoreboard our top 6 will be setup very nicely.

The way Meyers sounds, as a guy that has some skill he's yet to really show in the NHL. I think I'd try him at wing on the third line. Maybe some of it comes out in an easier more offensive role with two bangers. Just a thought.

Meyers seems to me more like another namnesnikov. Could be a decent third wheel with good finishing ability around the net.
I just didn't get to see enough of him late last season to really determine where he is. I mean, his cup of coffee right after he signed, he was playing like a damn good third liner. Then he came into camp and played like he was allergic to the freaking puck and was promptly sent to the AHL and injured.

If it's not too much to ask, could someone give a rundown on how Meyers and Foudy were playing in the AHL at the end of the season. Is there enough optimism to think either could compete for a position out of camp and it actually be a good thing?

What Meyers was good at prior to his pro career was burying those loose pucks but he really hasn’t done that at all in the NHL. Avs aren’t much of a rebound, gritty around the net team which doesn’t help but I wanted to see any evidence of hands and it hasn’t been there. Of his 4 goals last season 2 bounced off of him, one was so much an own goal the assists were taken away and one that he legit put past the goalie. At times he got the forecheck going with some o zone pressure which is why his analytics aren’t trash but he keeps trying college moves like chipping the puck past the D and try to go around them which doesn’t work and the worst part of his game is D zone coverage. If he hasn’t figured it out after a year of pro hockey at 24 years old I don’t know if the lightbulb is ever going to go on. I will say he knows how to take a faceoff at least.

Anyway, it is very difficult to compare Meyers and Foudy because they are on different trains so to speak. Meyers needs half a season in the AHL to properly graduate. Sure he could get handed a job again but that wouldn’t be a good thing. Foudy has no realistic chance, he’s too young and with 2 years of his ELC left they won’t take him serious as a legit option. Best he can hope for is a callup and a mindblowing performance.

Foudy had some mystery injury second half of the season, which was his first ANY games missed due to injury in 2.5 seasons. But for a good year or so Foudy has been a top player with the Eagles. Carries the puck a lot, great playmaker, started shooting the puck too. Great vision, great skill. He’s not like Mikko there or anything but it stands out and he’s consistently good. Too bad they didn’t give him much run on pp1 tho, so most of his production is at even strength. Hes on one of the top 2 lines, gets all situations play.

Meyers was better in the AHL, same type of player but more effective. Had the puck more and generated some offense. He had a nice point streak going which was mostly secondary assists and many secondaries from the pp. Still, the production was a reflection of generally more involvement on the Eagles. Still not much of a goal scorer which is a bit of a concern because the hands need to show up at that level. I’d say he was used more middle six with pp1 time.

Really appreciate the write-up @tigervixxxen!

I, like many around here, really kinda found a soft spot for Foudy during his call-up. The dude was like a little water bug jittering all over the place...fearless, or was it reckless? Regardless, he had no problems skating to the paint and driving the middle. I really want to see him succeed but sounds like he's going to have to earn it with a capital E if it's to happen this season.

He's still my dark horse, Malgin got more ice from Bednar for similar reasons.

Good news.

Hopefully Kovalenko continues to build confidence with another good year and then joins the Avs for the playoffs.

Drouin - MacK - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Johansen - Rantanen
Kovalenko - Colton - Wood
Cogs - Meyers - OC

Great news. Could maybe solve our 3RW problem for dirt cheap this year and allow us to add more at the deadline. I’m not in the full on meltdown some people having in free agent thread that we haven’t solved every issue before August so we’re gonna collapse and suck this year.

Scott Wheeler published a top-10 drafted goalie prospect ranking followed by 25 unranked honorable mentions, and Annunen was among the 25.
It’s crazy that picking names out of a hat would have been a better draft strategy than the Avs have been employing over the last 20 years!

Shit…by now, worst case, we should have found at least one or two diamonds in the rough, but we’re literally just getting bust after bust after bust when we pick after the top-10.

It’s absolutely infuriating that the scouts get to keep their jobs and f*** up our window after decades of no results! I know there’s been a few changes…but still.

if I don’t perform and show results each quarter, my ass is on a ticket to unemployedsville, like most people out there…but these guys just run it back, failure after failure, and hope that they’ll get it right *next year*.

f*** that shit…the Kroenkes need to stop acting broke and do whatever it takes to get Al Murray!

I’m still dumbfounded that we pretty much have the richest owners in all of sports and they’re so stingy that they’d rather have the fans of their teams not watch them on tv on the way to winning championships than appear like they’re giving in to the cable/satellite companies! That shit is insane IMO!

I’ve hung around Josh Kroenke a few times, 5-10 years ago, so I know it’s been a long time, but he’s a total basketball guy and is extremely money-driven. He’s super chill, but not a mention of hockey anywhere in his portfolio….just all basketball. To him, the Avs are just what came with the Pepsi Center and the Nuggets.

Stashing Kovalenko in the KHL is a great cap move. His cap hit will be minimal.

Now, let's complete the long con with Landy returning to perfect health just in time for game 1 of the playoffs.
Consult with Vegas and Tampa on that one.

I'm getting major Sampo Ranta 2020-21 flashbacks in here. Maybe THIS time it will work:nod::squint:

Not sure where to put this 🙃

I don't think Brennan is correct in that assessment.

I think Meyers will be competing with Pavel and Foudy for that spot in camp, with Cal Burke and Chris Wagner in the mix as well, and they won't have any problems sending down Meyers if they have to like they did last year. They have Cogs as a possible option at 4C if needed too.

Ben is going to have to earn his spot just like the other young players and prospects. I expect Pavel to be his main competition.

There's a reason the Avs signed Pavel out of college and gave him a look for a few games with the Eagles. He's also got a size and strength advantage on Meyers, and he's been a good PK'er and faceoff guy in his career. All of which are traits you want in a 4C.

Nobody is in the mix. They basically already know who is going to be on the opening night roster. Camp can get someone in higher consideration for a call up. Signing another forward pushes one of Olofsson or Meyers off the roster. Meyers has waiver exemption for 10 games but is on a one way and Olofsson is not but is on a two way. If there’s any competition it’s between them.
