No, there is a real difference.

Tanking is when you strip it to the studs, deliberately trying to be terrible for a series of years, hoping to get lottery lucky like the Pens and Devils. So you trade top players in their early 20s for draft picks, not just aging veterans.

Rebuilding is when you shift the focus from the short-term to long-term, dump players too old to contribute when you think you'll turn it around or players who don't fit what the new regime wants in a team. So you build around players in their late teens and early 20s who'll be entering into their prime seasons 4-5 years down the road. If you end up with some high draft picks, it's a byproduct, not the focus, of the process.

What is the incredibly arbitrary age in which we switch from tanking to rebuilding? This terminology is so damn confusing…

I don’t know how anyone who has listened to Jim Jackson with regularity could describe him as a “moron.”

You may not like his announcing, but he’s clearly an intelligent person with a quick wit.

I particularly enjoyed his seamlessly working an Anchorman quote into his play-by-play (without drawing any attention to it) seconds after they showed Will Ferrell in attendance at a Kings/Flyers game earlier this season.

And he does stuff like that pretty commonly, & I appreciate how he’s always subtle with it.

So Flyers are only team with no Captain this year and again next year and the only team to play 2 d 1 F in ot even when it don't work , constantly plays 11 f 7 D . We are one of a kind baby one of a kind ! Anybody still think Tort's isn't a complete control freak with small man syndrome .

No this is f***ing great. This is awesome. I love it. This organization, this media, this fanbase, are incapable of having a captain. Team Lore has spent too much time fluffing Clarke's ego with the "captains are the most important thing, oh hey Clarke was captain" thing. Everyone is convinced it's true. The end result is that when a captain doesn't single handedly compensate for shitty GMing and shitty coaching, the captain gets blamed before the people responsible. Great players end up being scorned because they don't do the impossible. This team should never have another captain again.

Captains are nothing but scapegoats here. Remove that option and let the people responsible take the heat they deserve.

He also has repeatedly said this season that Torts is “a really good coach” lol. His thoughts and opinions on hockey have gone more and more towards appealing to traditional hockey men than I ever thought was possible from him. He’s a disappointment.

Who cares about forcing a captain? Torts feels they don’t have the right player for that role at this stage in the building process.
