tbh this is my take aswell..

whoever might be close to C status right now may not even be here next year
Right. This whole situation is going to involve a lot of shuffling and change, so might as well let things just shake out before naming a captain. The timing (and player) would seem forced if they did it now.

When they DO name a captain, it will be a huge signal that they think their rebuild is ready to enter the next step. Toward being an actual good team. And Torts certainly does not think they are there yet. I think he said he expects a lot of pain next season, too.

SELL THE DAMN TEAM

If the new regime is really committed to building a Cup contending team, all of the following should be moved for futures over the next 16 months or so:
Hayes
Provorov
Laughton
Sanheim
DeAngelo
Ristolainen
Konecny

The following shouldn’t necessarily be shopped, but should be available if the return is good:
Tippett
Hart

Atkinson, if healthy, should be moved as a rental at the 2025 deadline. If injured, he can hopefully be dealt to a team needing to reach the cap floor after next season. Ellis is what it is, hopefully he can be dealt to a cap floor team prior to the last year of his deal.

Couturier is the tough one. If he comes back and starts playing like the Couts of old, you try to deal him after the 23-24 season. If he’s a lesser version or can’t stay healthy, you are stuck with him for quite a while. No one is trading for a broke down aging player with a 7.75 mil cap hit and a ton of term.

The goal right now should be accumulating picks. Make the above moves and this team should end up with 6 or more first round picks over the next 3 drafts and perhaps as many 27 or more picks overall. This is how you build a foundation. Once the foundation is in place, then, and only then, you look to fill the remaining needs via trades and free agency.

No this is f***ing great. This is awesome. I love it. This organization, this media, this fanbase, are incapable of having a captain. Team Lore has spent too much time fluffing Clarke's ego with the "captains are the most important thing, oh hey Clarke was captain" thing. Everyone is convinced it's true. The end result is that when a captain doesn't single handedly compensate for shitty GMing and shitty coaching, the captain gets blamed before the people responsible. Great players end up being scorned because they don't do the impossible. This team should never have another captain again.

Captains are nothing but scapegoats here. Remove that option and let the people responsible take the heat they deserve.

So you're saying we can convert the masses into an Authentic force for good?

Your 2023-24 Philadelphia Flyers:
Captain: Nicolas Deslauriers
Alternate: Tony DeAngelo
Alternate: Rasmus Ristolainen

Best? He was awful.

Now when do Jones and Jackson retire?

Hire people who aren’t complete morons, please.
Retire? My new maximum chaos hope is that briere does actually right the ship and these guys need to continue broadcasting through the tank and watch their wet dream team toughness crumble into a roster of high skill forwards and puck moving defensemen.

Since Covid robbed us of a normal playoffs in 2020, it's been five years since we got to experience the Flyers playing in meaningful contests with 10 games left in the regular season.

In the five seasons that Fletcher was GM for a majority or all of the games, the Flyers missed the playoffs four times.

18-19: 57 of 82 games - no playoffs
19-20: 69 games - made the playoffs
20-21: 56 games - no playoffs
21-22: 82 games - no playoffs
22-23: 65 of 82 games - no playoffs

I don’t know how anyone who has listened to Jim Jackson with regularity could describe him as a “moron.”

You may not like his announcing, but he’s clearly an intelligent person with a quick wit.

I particularly enjoyed his seamlessly working an Anchorman quote into his play-by-play (without drawing any attention to it) seconds after they showed Will Ferrell in attendance at a Kings/Flyers game earlier this season.

And he does stuff like that pretty commonly, & I appreciate how he’s always subtle with it.

Interesting Jim Jackson story. When I was in grade school (can’t remember what grade but definitely 6th or under), a class assignment was to write a letter to someone in a profession that you were interested in being when you were an adult. Questions about the job, how they ended up there, etc.

I wrote to Jim Jackson, because I wanted to be a Flyer’s announcer. I think i addressed it to some random PR address listed on the Flyers site.

Jim Jackson actually personally wrote me back with a long letter answering the questions and talking about the day to day of the job. I think I was the only person in the class tk actually get a response from anyone.

Any way, no bearing on whether he’s actually good at his job, but for what it’s worth, he did seem like a genuinely really good guy.

FYI, I never became a flyers announcer. Despite what they say, apparently I can’t be anything I want when I grow up.

I think he's one of the best play-by-play guys in the league. Great voice, doesn't take himself too seriously and has great chemistry with everyone he works with.

Who cares about forcing a captain? Torts feels they don’t have the right player for that role at this stage in the building process.

I’d rather they wait until they do.
Tort's wants to be the one in control of everything and he acts like an ass hat when the media ask him questions he don't like . He is great at malnipulating the media and they are too scared of him to ask him questions that contradict him .

Captain is only one thing but his personality of wanting to make every thing go thru him has been a trait that has followed him for years . He is in control and will do shit to let you know he is . He said earlier in the year that coaches have a tendency to over coach and over structure players and that he tries not to but he control most of the players in all 3 zones . He puts players in boxes and gives most no wiggle room .
Good coaches will structure in their own end but once their players cross the red line they have the freedom to create and that don't happen here with most . TK Tippet and TDA have freedom and the rest omg .

I said during the summer when their were rumblings of his hire that it is a huge mistake cause of his dick personality and he has lived up to it 100 % . He is an ass hat , I hate the sob .

I have a similar story - when I was in maybe 1st or 2nd grade, my dad and I took the train up to NYC for the day and to watch a Flyers game as MSG. Jackson ended up sitting somewhere near us and took the time to talk to me about the team and about sports broadcasting in general and also invited me to go up to the press box/announcer's area (drawing a blank on the actual name - the area where they call the game from) and to look around before the game started.

It's a shame because I have similar great memories of Coatesy and Coatesy Corner, but both of their opinions on hockey are so far from being modern.

Problem with Jackson is that it's really annoying to have him pee on my back and he tells me it's just microwaved mayo. I know it's not. He knows it's not. He tells the lie anyway. I can't appreciate it.

I really enjoyed this post. Thank you.

And this is why I bristle at people throwing around terms like “moron” to describe people like Jim Jackson.

I’m in my early 40s. I’ve been listening to him on TV (& even his radio start) for almost 30 years , I think.

Jim Jackson is certainly no moron. He’s in my opinion a top class announcer, even if you hate “No call!” But regardless of my opinion of his announcing, he’s obviously a smart quick-witted guy & always gave the impression of being a genuinely good man on top of it. Your story confirms that impression.

I'm sick how many Flyers fans & insiders love Laughton as a player. When he's so overrated... Briere definitely should trade him in the off-season.

we will see who is running things, Torts or the GM.

Normal peeps hire a president first and allow them to hire a GM. Flyers doing it backwards it seems.

Glad they are leaving no stone unturned in the GM search. Will they even interview anyone?

Well I’m currently applying for the open President of Hockey Operations position, so based on how that goes I can probably help you out.
You can do that, be the GM, and coach. You are def qualified. You would succeed and thrive in all 3 roles.

I got loaded with Coatesy, Dave Schultz, and Bob Kelly. It was after the Flyers-Phantoms exhibition game they played right before the Spectrum closed its doors for good. I want to say this was either 2008 or 2009.

The aunt of a friend I was with was tight with one of the security guards at the Spectrum and he let us down into this off-limits bar below the Spectrum that only the players/employees have access too. The 3 of them were down there at the bar drinking and my group went up and struck up a conversation and ended up talking with them the rest of the night. Chris Therien and Lou Nolan also popped up and there were other lesser-known alumni there that I didn't recognize at the time.

Was a pretty funny night, as Schultz was hitting on my friends Aunt and then my buddy Dave pissed him off by dropping his Cup ring when he let him hold it lol. Bob Kelly was f***ing HAMMERED. Literally couldn't even form a sentence.
