Risto is probably overthinking everything right now, they're trying to break him of a lot of bad habits, like chasing hits, learning to use his reach to stick check instead of trying to body everything, and so on. He is being more aggressive on offense.

One thing I'd like to see is to break players out of the slapshot habit, with players trying to block shots more often (better padding) these days, I don't see many slapshots getting through (the longer motion gives defenders time to get in position), and when they do, today's goalies can stop what they see. A quick wrist shot is generally more effective, since often the object isn't to beat the goalie, but give a player in front of the net an opportunity for a tip-in, or tie up the goal and get a rebound in the danger area.

The current Flyers admin would have benched Wayne Gretzky until he gained 40 pounds and started blocking shots.
So you wouldn't want Vegas style play?
Cassidy has them as the leading shot blocking team in the NHL (Flyers are 2nd).

It's more likely that he was a bad player, and the Flyers anti-skill, max-"safety" approach to hockey has merely broken him further. Everyone's ability to play hockey degrades on this team unless they find a way to develop themselves and ignore the team. Their hyperfocus on physicality, energy, and grinding over all other things causes all other things to atrophy. This has occurred for years and years. It's part of player development, which I've mentioned is a constant process not just limited to the prospects; a process that has been terribly broken here since Hextall was GM. Fletcher has doubled down on those processes and made them even worse.

Thank you. The fact that the Flyers are 2nd pretty much proves that shot blocking is irrelevant.

It is def time to trade Provorov. Hes a number 2 who could solidify a good teams top 4. He eats minutes and plays in all roles and has term. GMs love all of that so he could def land a good package.

Trading him for a 2023 first and a strong prospect while also clearing cap space and opening up a spot for York/Zemula is a no brainer. Even if you try to argue Prov could be a part of the future..itd come with an awful contract extension in 3 years. Hes more valuable traded.

This season:
Trade Provorov
Trade Hayes 2 mil reatained for his contract
Trade JVR 50% retained
Trade Braun for a late pick

That should land them at least 4 picks in the first 2 rounds in addition to their top 10 pick.

Next year:
Trade TDA at thr deadline
Trade Cam at the deadline or offseason
Maybe find a dumb taker for Risto

Could end up with 3 2024 1sts.

Gauthier
PHI 2023 1st (top 10..maybe top 5)
Prospect from Provy Trade
2023 1st from Provy trade
PHI 2024 1st
FLA 2024 1st
2024 1st from TDA trade

Provy, JVR, TDA, Atkinson, 5 mil of Hayes off the books by summer 2024 with a prospect pool of those above.

The Hayes deal might not work but the rest of that is pretty realistic. Point is its not hard to turn this around you just need ownership snd gm with the balls to do it.

I haven’t kept tabs on him really since his draft year but he looked like a star in the making then. So if he’s anything close to that talent still, I’d agree. I wonder how LA stacks them up internally.

I saw Cam Robinson say the other day that even at the AHL level, he wasn't shooting nearly enough. If you look at his AHL game log, he's got basically as many Shots in the last 2 games as he did in the previous 6. It's a sample size of effectively nothing, but maybe someone got through. We all know how weird a topic selfishness is in hockey.

I was toying with a provorov to la thread in the trade forums. I think he's an ideal partner for doughty but I'm not as high on many of the kings guys as they are

Actually, if Hayes keeps it up, as a 70 point wing who can play both sides and fill in at center, he may well have takers on a 3yr/$7M contract, think what an equivalent player would cost in FA. JVR got 5x7 at 29, so Hayes would be less risky for similar production.

He may not be a good fit here, but a team with a veteran center who can cover for him defensively might welcome his offense.

Oh god.

Not that I disagree with what you're suggesting.

But I just see a lot more years of bad hockey ahead of us.

I doubt the Kings would deal Clarke for Provorov let alone Byfield.

Kings have actually pulled off what Chuck/Hexy tried to do.
Theyre competitive with the old core with youth incoming.
Though outside of Vilardi alot of their top prospects have sputtered.

It's called "a rebuild." Even a fast rebuild will require at least two more losing seasons after this one.

I get that - it's just that we've been through a decade of bad hockey, and I'm not convinced this organization knows how to rebuild. Mainly because they've never done it.

They've always had money and a filthy rich corporate overseer that allowed them to outspend others. That masked a lot of poor decision-making, but at least they were mostly fun.

Now we just get to see the poor decision-making without the fun.

Eventually, this team will be good again. But I have little faith that it will be in two years. I'm thinking at least a half-decade before this starts to look like something respectable.
