Alot of scouts/analysts said Mccarthy was a good pick in the 4th round for us. I feel like he has had a decent but a not too spectacular college career. I want to sign him because you never know what a player can turn into but I'm not losing sleep over us potentially losing him. I could list all the D prospects we have but it's not worth it. Everyone here knows we have plenty and we have variety too. I like having defender who are actually good at defending and we seem to have 2 stalwarts signed for the future with Siegenthaler and Marino. Mccarthy on the 3rd pair wouldn't be a bad thing. He is going to have alot of competition with Ohotyuk and Bahl I guess.

You think he signs with another team? I just don’t see where he fits into NJs plans, and that’s no knock on him. I always will have a soft spot for the stay at home type.
Bottom pairing RD. Although I'm not sure that happens bc you'd have to imagine Hamilton-Marino-Nemec will be the right side in some formation for the foreseeable future.

Will be interesting to see what the Devils do with McCarthy with so many defenders turning pro. Just by guys under contract, next year looks something like:

Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Smith - Marino
Hughes - Bahl
Okhoituk
———
Wotherspoon - Nemec (Yr 2)
Mukhmadullin (Yr 1) - Walsh (RFA)
Vilen (Yr 1) - Vukojevic

Going to be a lot of rookie defenders in the pipeline next year. There’s a case to be made McCarthy may go elsewhere rather than be another rookie defneder in Utica.

As a natural right hander McCarthy has a shot at a third pairing NHL role assuming Nemec doesn’t take it next season. My guess is that being passed over for an ELC three times McCarthy probably sees the grass greener somewhere else.

Technically, believe he also still has the option to use a fifth-year of eligibility due to Covid if he wants to pursue graduate credits; though that route seems unlikely.

Are there any reliable sources out of Boston that have discussed his plans recently?

I haven’t seen any. There is an easy path to Utica for him and a narrow window to the NHL. Maybe NJ can offer him an ELC at the end of his college season and a game or two in NJ to burn an ELC year to entice him to sign? If NJ doesn’t give him that sort of incentive it’s hard to see him sign with NJ when another team might have a shallower prospect pool or maybe can concoct him they have a genuine plan for him? He hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire in college so I’m not sure if he is that great of a prospect in balance. I’d like him to sign with NJ since he does fit a profile the organization needs -which he hopefully can see - but if they haven’t gone after him yet to sign they must not be all that worried.

Everything has been coming up Devils in New Jersey this season, but there's more fun on the horizon. Speaking with assistant GM Dan MacKinnon for our upcoming Future Watch issue, the plan is for a couple of enticing European defensemen to join the team's AHL affiliate in Utica later this season. Shakir Mukhamadullin, a 2020 first-rounder, is expected to join the Comets once his KHL season with Salavat Yulaev Ufa ends. Mukhamadullin played a couple playoff games with Utica last year and the Devils are hoping he can get in a longer run this time.

"He's 6-foot-4 with an extremely strong lower half and legs and he's a good skater," MacKinnon said. "The foundation of his game is probably as a transitional defenseman with skill who can also defend."

Meanwhile in Finland, Devils 2021 fifth-rounder Topias Vilen is also expected to join Utica once his run in the Liiga is done.

"Our head of development for defensemen, Eric Weinrich, is really excited about Vilen," MacKinnon said. "From his skating, his composure, his ability to advance the puck and ability to take time and space away, Eric definitely feels there is an NHL-projectable game there."

And of course the Devils also have blue-chip defenseman Luke Hughes in the pipeline.

Time for a little Nikola Pasic love as he has been rampaging in his last two games.

It’s put him 4th in points in HockeyAllsvenskan.

Having a nice season which hopefully gets him back to Sweden's top league - either through Sodertalje getting elevated or by signing with another club.

Still don't see Devils signing him to an ELC before June 1st, when he would become an unrestricted free agent.

Did anyone see the Beanpot Tournament? BU finished fourth but Andrew Peters and Craig Rivet were raving about Case McCarthy's game against BC.

Trade one of Bahl/Okhotiuk so they can sign McCarthy. At this point he may test his luck UFA.
Given the righty lefty thing it's somewhat apples and oranges to me. I'd think the recent drafting of Nemec, Casey, and the other RHD sends something of a message to McCarthy. That said, he's got a clear path to a third pair RHD spot in the short term after this season. He's probably ahead of Nemec and the other young RHD in terms of maturity and defense.

Interesting that you say that.

Other than on here I've heard almost nobody mentioning McCarthy as one of their prospects.

No, he's a defensive defensman which to many prospect watchers means he's not interesting. The team struck out with Walsh but maybe McCarthy gets a full season to establish himself as a third pair righty when Severson leaves. I'm not sure if the organization views him as a prospect though. Presumably if they did they would have signed him to a deal after last season rather than see if he wants to try to catch on elsewhere after graduating.

Exciting news from Czechia. After 13 pointless games, Jaromir Pytlik scored a goal!

So he has two now, which is nice.

That gives him 3 points in 28 games for Kladno.

I didn’t think he would be less productive for them this year after having 5 points (5G 2A) in 30 GP last season, but it looks like he’s pulling that off.

Not sure I'd characterize Walsh as a "strike out" (though it is interesting that he was a 3rd while McCarthy was picked in the 4th round).

Walsh definitely benefitted playing on a Crimson D corps with Marino, Fox and Vancouver prospect Jack Rathbone (how did Harvard lose 11 games that season?)

At the same time, BU had a rare off-year during McCarthy's junior year last season (when organizations frequently make their decisions on drafted college players).

The team has turned things around in Jay Pandolfo's first season as head coach (though they have cooled some in recent weeks).

Will be interesting to see what happens with McCarthy.
