WJC: 2021 Canada Roster Talk Part 2

Can someone explain to me why Byfield is slotted 3rd or 4th line C? The guy was drafted 2OA in a crazy deep draft, how can he not be the 1st line C now that Dach is injured
 
I have not had a chance to watch any prelim games yet. How has Mercer looked? I have only read that his minutes are low. As a devils fan i was hoping he would play a larger role this year

Also , what the hell happened to Bahl ? Is he at least an extra or taxi squad player ? He was on the team last year. Is he over age or simply wasnt good enough to make the team ?

Because he is not very good in best vs best tournaments thus far. He may play his way up the lineup though he was very physical last night, he didn't do much else though.
 
They shouldn’t keep the lines “the same”, if only because we clearly saw McMichael and Krebs having very little chemistry together. If Tourigny won’t do what most of us wanted to see at the start of camp (Cozens on the wing), I’d like to see this top 6:

Perfetti-Cozens-Krebs
Quinn-McMichael-Tomasino

Youngest player on a very good team. Plus, he’s a huge body, and still physically developing. One year can make a big difference in growth in one’s late teens.

I'm pretty confident that he's in the lineup from this point forward. He'll get minutes too.

Mercer looked good in the first practice game, didn't do much in the second, then didn't show up on the scoresheet really in the games that weren't broadcast. He was fairly good on the forecheck last night but otherwise didn't do a whole lot. He's a reliable winger fo the team.

Bahl is too old.
 
I watched the game against Russia twice and only noticed that there is chemistry on 2 lines ( Newhook and McMichael lines). The other 2 lines needed to be reconfigured asap.
The defensive pairing of Harley and Schneider looked mediocre. Schneider seems to be a step behind on few defensive plays, and Harley had to help him.
Hence, i am proposing a few changes for the next game:

Option 1:
Perfetti - McMichael-Cozens
Zary- Krebs- Tomasino
Holloway-Newhook-Pelletier
Suzuki- Byfield - Quinn
Mercer

Option 2:

Perfetti - McMichael-Quinn
Zary- Cozen- Tomasino
Holloway-Newhook-Pelletier
Krebs- Byfield - Mercer
Suzuki

Option 3:

Perfetti - McMichael-Cozens
Zary- Byfield- Tomasino
Holloway-Newhook-Pelletier
Krebs -Suzuki - Quinn
Mercer


Defense:

Byram-Drysdale
Harley-Korcaek
Guhle-Barron
Schneider Spence

Levi

I noticed that Cozen is not much a stickhandler, hence it is hard for him to play centre.

Didn't notice Mercer very much last night.

Bahl is 20 and ineligible.

Dach wasn't even playing c last night.

And look at the centers ahead of him (newhook, McMichael and cozens) all had great d+1 years.

Personally I think he should be at least the 3c though. Move cozens to the wing, that's where he had success last year. That bumps Byfield up to at least 3c, and then have mercer play the 4c role.
 
The American 1st 2 lines have really good chemistry, HC needs to the same from their line 1 and 2 which are not yet at the same level of chemistry.

Zary outplaying Mercer at this point ? Or hard to tell as they play different styles / position or ?

It always catches me off guard when I see Kaliyev on team USA . I always assumed he was a Russian prospect based off of his last name .

The big disappointment tonight for me was Krebs, tried the no-look pass to a Russian one too many times and didn’t gel with McMichael at all. Again, first game, maybe he’s working out the kinks.

Rewatching the game now... I know there were a couple plays where he lost it .. but Krebs set up Perfetti and McMichael for good scoring chances in the first and he setup McMichael for one early in the 2nd .. thats so far in the game at 18:00 of the 2nd. I disagree with your assessment of Krebs. He had a good game .. a couple misfires but I'll chalk that up to rust. Taiwan Hockey has the replay of the game.. I also disagree that there was no chemistry with McMichael.. that line had 5 good chances to score and moved the puck efficiently. Perfetti is a zone entry machine. I'd leave them.
