His first competitive game in 9 months. He got beaten twice, so yes, he should do better and he himself will probably be the first to acknowledge this. But he isn't "so bad" in his own zone, that's just an absurdly poor take. Last year at the WJC he did fantastic being Canada's all situation D, he was pretty damn good in the WHL defensively as well. He might not be prime Langway or Vlasic in his own zone, but he is to top-end defender. He reminds me so much of Duncan Keith, a guy who is dynamic offensively, pretty damn good defensively, but just like Keith wasn't the go-to shutdown guy on the Hawks, Bo won't be one either.
I’d argue that last night he was pretty poor defensively, but like you say he hasn’t played in a while. But last night was not good for him. He looks like dynamite in the offensive zone though.

In the camp probably, last night not really. I'd say that Mercer was a bit more noticeable though neither did that much.
I actually thought Zary played very well in his limited ice time. He had a post in the late 1st I believe, and he fought off a couple players to spring Cozens for what I felt was our best scoring chance this game. Not to mention he showed some great speed and defensive awareness, and not just on the PK. He (and Mercer) were just unfortunate that our players that are usually scratched were cycling in and out with Byfield which limited their ice time and how much time we had to notice their play.

I agree Zary had a good game. I thought Mercer did as well. I found them tenacious and reliable .. good reads , supported well and were solid in all 3 zones

People are overreacting regarding line chemistry in last night’s game. Give these guys a chance to play together a little before we tear them apart.

A little overboard on the dissecting.. 1st game since March for most of these guys. Some rust was evident and some of the ;lightning fast decisions were just a bit off but they'll get better.. So much talent on this team..along with excellent two way play from quite a few of them. Dach will be missed ..he's just that little bit ahead.

Well as a Hawks and Canada fan, Dach being out sucks. I was super pumped to see him in this tournament, especially with the NHL still 3 weeks away.

Rewatching the game now... I know there were a couple plays where he lost it .. but Krebs set up Perfetti and McMichael for good scoring chances in the first and he setup McMichael for one early in the 2nd .. thats so far in the game at 18:00 of the 2nd. I disagree with your assessment of Krebs. He had a good game .. a couple misfires but I'll chalk that up to rust. Taiwan Hockey has the replay of the game.. I also disagree that there was no chemistry with McMichael.. that line had 5 good chances to score and moved the puck efficiently. Perfetti is a zone entry machine. I'd leave them.

That was individual talent shining through, those two did not appear to have chemistry to me. For a couple of 19 year old first rounders, I was expecting to see better interplay and puck possession by that line, which they did not produce. Agree to disagree, my hope is that Dach’s absence shakes up the lines to a good degree now.

Quinn was just OK, not good but not a liability in my view. First game coming off the lay-off so I’m good giving him another shot on the top line.

So with Dach out, for me it’s either Quinn-McMichael-Cozens, or Quinn-McMichael Tomasino with Cozens staying at center between Perfetti/Krebs.

The big disappointment tonight for me was Krebs, tried the no-look pass to a Russian one too many times and didn’t gel with McMichael at all. Again, first game, maybe he’s working out the kinks.

I thought Krebs actually had a good game.

Cozens - McMichael - Quinn
Perfetti - Byfield - Krebs
Holloway - Newhook - Pelletier
Zary - Mercer - Tomasino
Suzuki

I'd run that forward group

He was, like I said. But to claim he is "so poor" defensively based on one game is outlandish.

Can someone explain to me why Byfield is slotted 3rd or 4th line C? The guy was drafted 2OA in a crazy deep draft, how can he not be the 1st line C now that Dach is injured

well
Mackenzie says he may actually audition for first line center.
Mr. Byfield- take this opportunity and run with it.
I would love nothing better for this guy to step up and prove me wrong. let’s get after it.

Time to begin preparing for a Christmas feast and some rare Christmas WJC games before the main draw begins tomorrow. Merry Christmas to all and hopefully a good tournament, with a good result, begins today.
I'm personally more excited to watch USA VS Russia tonight than Canada VS Germany tomorrow

Glad the world juniors are back. You get some of the most exciting hockey of the year.

Go Canada go.

Feels like Canada is missing that elite scoring forward now. That might just be a product of the team being so deep that no one sticks out from the rest in that sense. Each player is really good. Byfield should be that guy since he's apparently the second best prospect in hockey but he's yet to show that.
