It still wouldn't surprise me on bit that the Kings are in on Eichel. Debate it all you want but it is a dereliction of his duties if Blake isn't kicking the tires on it, especially considering they are one of the few teams that has the requisite assets and cap space.

I don't fully remember the lead up to the proposed Patches trade and Kovy signing but I don't remember there being a ton of smoke for a long time leading up to that. Arvidsson deal came out of nowhere. Contract negotiations get played through the media and things get leaked when the team or player wants them to be leaked. Look no further than the Lombardi/Hammond incident in the Williams trade to realize that Blake isn't going to want Hoven or anyone else pumping potential interest in Eichel.

Next year's first would firmly be in play and it would be unprotected. One of the non-Byfield center prospects would also be gone. Kempe? Maybe. One of Bjornfot/Anderson/Roy? Probably.

Have to think that the organization might view Clarke as the #2 prospect in the organization behind Byfield. If Turcotte is now #3 but you can use him to get a proven star player in Eichel and still keep your two top prospects, it gets really interesting.

Interesting indeed. It certainly would turn up the heat on the Kings established vets to put up, or shut up.

Yeah. I still don't think it will happen but they definitely have to be having discussions: even if it is buffalo initiating.

I think signing Danault is more likely. Not stirring up DL/Blake debate but this rebuild has been pretty similar. Last season didn't go as 2008-09 as expected but we are still seeing the additions in the forward ranks of Arvidsson and probably something else...this is similar to Williams/Smyth.

Danault would be the Handzus signing. Zeus was 30 (!) when he signed his four year deal that was worth 7.95% of the cap at the time. A $6MM deal to Danault would be 7.5% of the cap and he should still be a valuable player even at 34. Flat cap--amongst other things--doesn't make this an apples-to-apples comparison as that 7.5% could be the same next year but you get the point. It allows Blake to add a good player without moving out prospects. He gets to see more development before possibly making a bigger deal for a defenseman that sees him dipping into the wealth of center prospects in the pipeline. With Danault in the fold, it allows you more flexibility to move out a C or two.

This team has a lot of problems. Is $6MM overpaying? Sure. In order to not trade prospects too early but also hedge against their value dropping by holding assets that don't develop as hoped, he is probably going to have to overpay at some point.

There isn't one team in the league that has a perfect contract set up across the board. This website is entirely too caught up in the idea of market value being an overpayment: some situations call for it and everything isn't in a vacuum. Danault at $6MM with term is overpayment in a vacuum but it might not be when applied to this team.

I mean yeah, if we can trade like Clague and next year's second for Bertuzzi, I'm all in on that. I think we need to find a dumber GM though. I don't want to make any trades with Stevie Y. He'll fleece us for sure.

I would call Stevie Y and ask what prospects he wants...then NOT trade them and focus on them.

Blake HAS been very, very good at keeping the smoke to a minimum.

With how stoked the scouting staff seems about this recent draft, you have to wonder if that changes things regarding reluctance to move prospects.

Not expecting a mega trade but it would be surprising if Arvidsson is the only outside addition to the team heading into next season.

Except Blake wouldn't be driving that shiny new Mercedes right off the new car lot...but a broken down model off the used car lot that the previous owner won't pay to fix. No thanks for paying anywhere near that. For Blake this is a high potential CLM (career limiting move).

asking price on Eichel reportedly was equivalent of 4 first round picks...ok Kempe, Madden, Kupari, Bjornfot/Vilardi/2022 first

Would not be irate with that but definitely is a lot to give up, and I imagine the price tag is getting smaller.

I’d do that 100% . Kempe Madden Kupari and 1st 2022 sign me up

when i heard that on the athletic hockey podcast my first thought was that Buffalo was out to lunch. Than I put that together and it did not seem too bad

That's kind of a shit sandwich. Is Madden a 1st round pick in a redraft? Just pretty much lost an entire season of development getting destroyed due to skating with his head down.

What is the jewel of that deal? Kupari? The 2022 1st from a team that adds Eichel and only loses Kempe from its current roster which means the pick will probably not be Top 10?

I think it is Turcotte and the 2022 1st as starters. Then it goes from there.

Do you understand why the price tag is getting smaller?
To me the only reason for it is to sell damaged goods…

Ladies and gentlemen, Rob Blake has a trade to announce...
