The Kings were a top defensive team up until this past season (which Vancouver hasn't been in a very long time).

Doughty was a -34 last season. Does that mean he's worse than Forbort? I think we should know by now that stat category is reflective of the team and less so the individual.

Forbort is an extremely limited player who was put in a role that is way over his head, and it suffered as a result.

Someone could make a decent compilation video of all the times Forbort was beaten wide last season because of his lumbering skating.

Youtube has a time limit on videos.

It's hard to even figure out a role with Forbort. He played his best (by far) when he first broke in. Great possession numbers even with a low PDO, solid in all aspects. This was while enjoying a 56 ozone start vs 44 dzone starts. Fast forward a few years and the numbers are flipped. When his dzone starts shot higher, his possession numbers suffer. Last year they were absolutely terrible, he had the worst rel CF of any starting D by far.

His style is that of a defensive defensman, but he's always suffered when deployed in defensive roles. He is the most effective when deployed in an offensive manner, but there are better options for that. That's the conundrum with him. I keep hearing how he is good defensively (which I don't see at all), but every single number says the opposite. 255 games is more than enough sample size. When you play that many games for a team that's been great defensively and possession wise and STILL put up a negative CF%, something's wrong.

Maybe he was a solid bottom pairing guy for a while, but he's a 6/7 penalty kill specialist at this point. He had zero business on the first line, which was unfair to him. Thankfully he will either be traded at the deadline or move on after this season.

I think many of you are going to be rather disappointed in Ben Hutton by January, maybe December.
I dont understand the fawning. Dude was signed last minute by the 2nd worst team in the league. He's looked good in preseason but I remember when Johan Fransson and Thomas Hickey outplayed Jake Muzzin in preseason.

At what point do they give another goalie a shot at number 1?

I think Quick isn't going anywhere unless he's bought out. I don't see why any other team would need him in a trade. Even as a mid 30's backup at half his cap hit, you can find that in free agency for a year, instead of locked in for 3 more seasons after this one. All he has going for him is what he did more than half a decade ago.

Campbell gets his shot this year. After this season, either Quick is bought out, or Campbell/Petersen gets dealt, and next year, we see what happens. I don't think there's any rush to buy Quick out, because they have to hit the cap floor next year. If they did do that, you're eventually going to have to trade one of Campbell or Petersen anyway. They're both going to want to be the #1 guy. They'll not complain while Quick is here, because more unproven players tend to respect the old proven guys. To some extent anyway. Take Quick out of the equation though, and Campbell and Petersen are going to be up for contracts soon, and neither guy is 22. They're going want to get some real NHL money, and you can only do that if you play.

One of them gets traded, and then this time next year, whoever is left gets an even better shot at beating out an even older Quick.

You all go on and on about Quick as if he's 'done'. So what happens to your predictions above if Quick puts up good numbers? They are not going to buy out the one goaltender who was the Conn Smythe winner for the organization's first cup.

Hutton gave me some Willie Mitchell vibes. Not sure if it's because of the fact he came from Vancouver and his size. I think he's going to be a good 2nd/3rd pairing dman. Don't think he should be next to Doughty, but I also don't think Forbort should be either. Forbort is not a top pairing dman, and until guys like Mikey Anderson and Bjornfot are ready, it looks like the Kings will be trotting guys like Forbort out there, unfortunately.
Willie Mitchell was a special player that brought way more than size, a long stick and good steady play. Sure he played lots of mistake-free hockey while he was here. Not real flashy stuff. The difference was that he brought enormous leadership to the team. He brought joy to the locker room. If coaches ever talk about playing for the guy next to you, Willie Mitchell was that guy. He's the kind of guy that makes being on a team a fun. There's not a defenseman on the Kings that didn't look up to Mitchell and the way he carried himself every day.

I get the comparison, but "Willie Mitchell vibes" just has a whole different meaning to me than what you see on the ice.

Love Mitchell!

I thought he had a lot left....not sure he gives value this whole contract

In his last season in Pittsburgh, Fleury's numbers were a GAA of 3.02 and a SV% of .909. He was also 32 at the time and lost the net to Matt Murray. Penguins fans couldn't wait to get rid of him.

Then he becomes the starter in Vegas and takes them all the way to the Cup Final.

Quick will be a few years older than Fleury though by the time Seattle makes their selections.

Speaking of Quick, this was just posted by The Athletic.

Here's what was said about Quick.
“He’s on the downside,” said a GM.

“He still has that athleticism but there’s a lot of question marks,” said another.

“There’s probably a decline setting in,” said a third.

But even as most panelists recognized the decline, there were still a handful who predicted a turnaround from Quick this season.

“He’s going to have a bounce back year,” predicted a general manager.

“I think he’s going to be better than he was last year,” said a goalie coach. “He’ll bounce back.”

“I don’t want to write him off,” said an assistant GM. “He had a bad year last year but the year before he was phenomenal.”

They had him ranked 16th overall among netminders.

It's not about being done. He can have a great year, and he still likely won't have much value in a trade. A) He's a goalie. B) He's going to be 34 before he gets traded. C) He still has 3 years left after this one. At least his salary drops by half though. That's not an easy asset to deal. I don't think they'll have much luck trading him, so if people want Campbell/Petersen next year, there's only one other option. Other teams know the contract situation for the Kings in goal going into next year. I don't think Campbell's new contract makes it any easier.

I'm not sure there's a clear path to the goaltending. If Quick was a UFA, then there's a road there. If Petersen was 22, there's a road there. Campbell is closer to 30 than 25, but he's not considered to be the future guy, and they just gave him an extension, with 2 other guys under 1-way deals next year. 3 headed monsters never work.

Does Seattle take a chance on Quick?

People will point to Fleury as a parallel, but he was 32 going on 33, with 2 years left on a contract, when Vegas got him. Quick will be 35 going on 36 when Seattle drafts, with 2 years left on a contract. Hell, Fleury will be 36 going on 37, with 1 year left on a contract, when Seattle gets to the table. What if Vegas exposes him? Would he be the better option between the two for Seattle? He would be a year older, but less term to account for, only $500k more in cash, and a slightly larger cap hit to hit the floor with.

So what you're saying is that Jonathan Quick is going nowhere, like many of us have assumed because of what you just mentioned..

If Campbell has more trade value than Quick, then when Petersen's ready you trade Campbell.

The downside is you have a 5.8 mil cap hit on your backup....but what do we care about cap hits right now? All our best vets are signed long term, all our best prospects are at least 3 years away from RFA raises.

Howard in Detroit has had to split start for a few years before somewhat re-finding his game. Maybe that is the way to treat Quick.

Agree 100% Comparing Hutton to Mitchell should get you a one week demotion to Ducks fan status.

Nope. You apply a rash to JQ.

News apparently travels very slow at ESPN.

And they deleted the tweet. For those who missed it, apparently ESPN just learned that Dion Phaneuf had been bought out by the Kings.
