I have seen it multiple times on here and in the news, but again I drink a lot and can get confused but I believe the u-23 team gets "first" dibs, if not selected that US/Can player re-enters the pool...someone else might want to chime in if incorrect or not.

either way it is ******** and it pisses me off to see so many US kids not playing for their country. the u-23 team will be exciting, and hell I think finishes in the top 4 just on pure skill and young ignorance of not giving a ****...I don't want to see this again for the 2020 tourney.

You'll get a warm and fuzzy feeling watching Jack Eichel score a late third period goal to knock the US team out of contention.

First time we agree on anything. This so called World Cup is ********, just a power play by the NHL

Perversely I hope the u23 team wins the tournament.

The team will usually feature 7-9 non-NHLers and maybe our depth charts should reflect that lol

This is and has been the nature of team USA at worlds. Also, the college students were chosen even before the professionals who got kicked out of the playoffs, which indicates that the NHL players kicked from the playoffs are the ones who fill the roster, and the college kids are predetermined. Not vise versa.

Is it normally this many college guys this early in the process? I thought (going only by memory which is admittedly bad) that they only tend to get added later to fill the team.

Usually one or two right off the bat. This year seems particular bad due to the World Cup.

Last year I remember in the friendlies stage they already had Alex Lyon and Connor Hellebyuck at goalie, Dan Sexton and Steve Moses the KHL players, Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews (Matthews only for the pre-tournament tour) and Jimmy Vesey for the Austria friendly like 2 weeks before. I think they may have added Dylan Larkin later but it may just be that I wasn't looking for him. In general I'm not of the mind and memory that the college kids are the fillers, I don't think this year is an exception or that we've had an extra bad call up year.

Why is there no discussion about Patrick Kane? Don't hope he'll agree to play for the US team at the World Championship? St.Louis is not a bad team so probably Patrick will be playoff-free by the time.

Look at current US team: Maroon, Hendricks, Motte, Compher, Conner, Matthews, Murphy, Condon, Demko, Kinkaid, Wideman etc.

Do you really think that Patrick Kane would join to play and compete on this team? He has nothing to prove on this level, and certaily not on this team.

Because we've been paying attention for the last ten years

Probably his patriotic feelings will be stromg enough to agree. Why not? Probably some other motives. Recall that Crosby played for Canada previous year. Maybe only to get a member of Triple Gold Club but still...Why shouldn't Kane at least try the same?

Yes, but even before Crosby joined team Canada, that team was already stacked and Gold Medal favourite. USA has pretty poor team this year, at least it looks so right now. I can't imagine that Kane would want to play with such a team. He will probably gladly take some rest after many long seasons he had.

But obviously, it would be awesome to see...

Good thing for the US is that Gostisbehere will most likely be available soon.

If he didn't get hurt, I wonder if Jack Johnson would have been on this team.

Wouldn't happen. Him and USA Hockey's management don't get along and he isn't gonna get an invite nor will he accept one. He isn't well regarded anymore and isn't a productive player. Wouldn't want him on the team.

Some realistic candidates to join the US' Worlds team that are in the playoffs would be Nick Leddy, Nick Bjugstad, Nick Bonino, Shayne Gostisbehere, Brian Dumoulin, Brock Nelson, Charlie Coyle, Danny DeKeyser, Jason Zucker. 9 spots left, 6 forwards and 3 defensemen.

Dylan Larkin maybe?

Dylan Larkin maybe?

Larkin would obviously make a big difference with this team but first full season as a pro, playing in the playoffs, it's understandable if he opts for rest if the Red Wings get eliminated by TB. Would be great if he decided to play though.

He's appeared in the USA jersey 70+ times, I don't think Jack is a person who is going to put a grudge against US management over representing his country.

Comparable: Giroux, Claude.

Only comparison is both were left off their country's olympic squad. Giroux was disappointed about not making it but his relationship HC management wasn't bad. JJ felt betrayed and his relationship with USAH is nonexistent at this point. That's why I don't think he'll be in a Team USA sweater for a while

I saw you guys wrote out Kane and I think that's very likely. However, I wonder if the Hynes connection gets him to go at all. He spoke pretty highly of him during the Devils two meetings against the Blackhawks.
