I hate Al Murray with a passion because of his picks while with us but the way he has been drafting for the Lightning the last couple of years , i would have to give praise where its due . He is one of the best at the moment. Tampa Bay and Anaheim are the best scouting and developing teams in the league at the moment.

I hate to say it but i think Anaheim is the best in entire league in drafting. Look at their picks and prospects its ridiculously rich and spread with great talent

They did this by keeping their picks and not trading away prospects to win the cup. Different approaches to drafting I suppose and having lots of picks to play with.

I tend to agree but to be somewhat fair to Murray there was NO development system here. I blame that partly on him anyway, and I'm not pretending his drafts are nutty good or anything, but there HAS to be a reason people pretty universally feel that way about him (outside the Kings, haha).

He's riding the coatails of a guy who learned from Ken Holland. And high draft picks year after year in Tampa doesn't hurt either.

In my opinion, I think a lot of the respect for Murray comes with him drafting players who are ranked very highly by independent services. They are very talented players who, short term, pan out well (which is why I thought he was great as a scout for Team Canada's World Junior Team).

Where I think he falters is identifying character and projecting players long term. That's just my opinion.

You mean like Drouin?:naughty:

I wouldn't say so. Even when we do have picks their picks seem to be more of a home run then our grinders that just fit into a specific role on the team to their own strength

Do the Cups mean anything?

Different approaches to drafting? The Kings did the same exact thing for years. Then they said screw it, we'll go for it. Anaheim doesn't, because they have an internal cap. They draft guys, and trade them anyway. They can't quite take the next step, because they're always like a player away.

Also they're not willing to move a high end prospects or players to get that guy they've needed to play along side Perry and Getzlaf. Lombardi was willing to trade Johnson, Simmonds and Schenn to get the players he knew we needed to win and move assets around. The Ducks have never done that. They've already held onto Fowler probably longer than they should. Imagine if they had the stones to package Fowler and Gibson for an elite forward?

Will be interesting interesting to see which goaltenders they have in mind, and if they add a pick or two, maybe they take two and one them is a long-term project going the college route, Colton Point or Joseph Woll, specifically. Then someone else going the junior route, and a little more developed in terms of game experience, not nesscerily age.

I know Al Murray made some bad selections, but without his 2005 draft of Kopitar #11 overall and Quick in rd 3, there are no Cups, period.

Kopitar was not an 'automatic' choice at #11, as several other teams passed on him as well. Marc Staal was taken at #12 and I bet the current staff may have gone for him. Quick in the 3rd round; he was not even in college and playing at Old Avon Farms. A pretty good reach there and brilliant to take him.

You can choose to hate him for taking Boyle, Tambellini in the epic 2003 draft...and for all the numerous reasons posted here over the years, but LA has 2 CUPS, LARGELY due to Kopitar and Quick, period.
Al Murray selections, period. So, if he selected Lucic instead of Joey Ryan or so and so instead of so and so...that may not have got LA any CUPS. Kopitar and Quick - Quick especially - are 2 of the main reasons there are 2 banners in Staples. Adding Richards, Carter, Williams, etc were immensely huge, but without Quick, not sure if we have a Cup.

Thank you, Al !

Bingo!

People just don't realize how fortunate this management team was to inherit two guys like that, an all-world center and an all-world goaltender.

This draft gives me '96 or '99 vibes, two drafts that were very lacking in talent.

I must disagree. 1996 was a really bad year and my mind this year's crop is a lot better. Both Matthews and Laine are going to be a really, really good and I belive that 1strounders like Tkachuk, Juolevi, Puljujärvi, Gauthier, Rubtsov, Chychrun will have at least a solid, above-average NHL-career.

That management team was also fortunate that Kopitar fell as far as he did in that draft. Fortunate Quick fell so far as an all-world talent too. There aren't 71 players better than him in that draft. They did take Roussin and Fast with picks they had prior to Quick.

So, fortunate turtles all the way down.
