Hmm wonder if that means Quick is coming back sooner than expected.

Good riddance to Zats indeed. Its pretty hilarious that out of all goaltenders we drafted and developed (Jones, Bernier, Berube) that we ended up with the worst one in Zatkoff. Should've claimed Khudobin off of waivers earlier in the year...

You want praise you need to take criticism, Lombardi let his emotions get away with his decision making and as a result he F'd up.

Richards should of been bought out, but because we just won a cup, emotionally he could not do it. Buy out Richards sign Williams with that extra cash. Justin Williams who arguably was the glue of the LA Kings.

Gaborik had a hot streak in the playoff's, and because we just won the cup, emotions got in the way again sign him to a stupid deal.

The Brown deal was about payment for the past not the future, fine if you are going to do that, then you best be careful how you manage things going forward.

This is in now way shape or form taking away from the cups, but if you let emotions get in the way of business decisions most will not end well.

Since 2014 almost every decision he made has been extremely bad. We are just lucky that Edmonton threw stupid money at Lucic, or we would be facing yet another bad contract. Sports is all about the now and the future, the now sucks, and the future is not bright.

Dude needs to go.

Should've traded Quick and Brown after the 2012 Cup. You cant give those big contracts to guys nearing 30. Both were hot after a great playoff, and you sell high. The 2014 Cup shouldn't have happened if Lombardi did things right. A smart GM doesn't trade Simmonds and Schenn for Richards to begin with. A 1st rounder for an average regular season team shouldn't have been traded for Carter either. Maybe the 2012 Cup doesn't even happen then.

Since the 2014 Cup shouldn't have happened because the previous trades don't happen, it would've been easier to trade both Muzzin and Martinez in June of 2014, since they were still on $1m contracts. Kopitar should've been traded in June of 2015. Gaborik is never a King at all. Shouldn't have traded a 1st for Penner. All the big contracts either never get here or are gone by now, and they have all their 1st round picks, and they would've been higher 1st round picks because the team would've been worse each of those seasons.

Instead of getting Carter in 2012, they should've traded guys like Stoll and Penner(not that they should've had Penner) for whatever they could get at the time, because neither guy was producing. The Kings would be in a much better position today. You can even make the case that O'Sullivan shouldn't have been traded for Williams, as Williams made the team better in the short run.

So really, everything the Kings have done since at least the 2009 trade deadline has put the franchise in a worse position.

He's been pretty poor as well. Rather just bring up Campbell.

I love you :)

I remember the early 2000s very clearly, and I can safely say that Zats is one of the worst goalies we have ever had. I mean worse than Fiset, Storr, Cloutier, LOLbarbara et al.

Couldn't we just sign Campbell to an extension? I don't know his contract details.

He's already signed but don't think the team wants to give him up yet.
But even if we have to expose Campbell there's likely better options for Vegas to take in goal and from us in other positions.

I can't agree with you on the Williams and Carter trades. Dean saw a window opening for cup contention if he added the right veterans to the roster.

Fortunately for Kings fans, he found the right combination.

Stoll, Greene, Richards, Williams, and even Penner were all instrumental in 2012. Gaborik played a key role in 2014.

I think now that the core is 5 years older, it's a different story. The window is closing. Dean made some moves to try and keep it open beyond 2014, but those moves haven't worked out. The window is now closed.

I mentioned Brown and Gabby as being DL's biggest mistakes. Reread my post. Please don't repeat my original point.

Hindsite is 20/20, per Lucic et al. What of the young talent on the roster and in the pipeline?

I read it, you ignore part of what you said, so it needed repeating

Hindsite is not 20/20 on Lucic, he had a lot of miles and was trending down.
If he had the cap room Lombardi would yet again overpaid and extended the contract for way too long. True or false?

What about Richards? Why did he not buy him out? You cannot become emotionally attached to players, its about business decisions. I really believe had the Kings not won the cup in 2014 Richards would have been bought out. So we win the cup, and suddenly it is no longer an option.

Brown wasn't a mistake with regards to paying him for what he had done. I had no problem giving him the deal, but at that point you cannot tie yourself up with other future long term contracts and have your team made up of multiple retirement deals.

Lots of teams have young talent, that team down I5 is loaded with it.

I think most on here will agree, we are not very deep in young talent within the organization. Last time I checked our AHL team has about as much it way of grizzled vets as the NHL club.

Maybe Dean was too nice to a fault, in life that is a admirable thing, in sports it can lead to your demise.

Among the forwards, only Amadio and Brodzinski are the two stand outs (with Kempe called up). Mersch and Auger are the only other two who may possibly find a role as bottom six forwards.

On defense, MacDermid might be the best prospect with LaDue called up. Sharpizianov and Lintuniemi haven't really established themselves yet in the AHL so I'd consider them longshots.

And they have no prospects in net who have a future in the NHL.

That AHL team really is short on talent and mostly filled with journeymen. This takes me back to the days of when the Kings best talent in the minors were Eric Belanger, Donald MacLean and Josh Green.

A lot of our best prospects are still in junior, though--this was widely acknowledged as a sort of 'bridge' year in that regard.

Clague, Moverare, Cernak are the best prospects in the pipeline, with Spencer Watson (and overaged junior) being the best forward prospect in juniors.

There isn't a long lineup of prospects who will be moving up to the AHL next season aside from a couple of guys who will be wrapping up their junior hockey careers.

Calling it a "bridge year" is pretty much saying they barely have any prospects in the pipeline. It isn't too difficult to call a spade a spade and acknowledge the fact that this team barely has any talent in the system.

bahahahahahhaha...Quick has been at worst a top 10 goalie since 2012 and has middle of the pack cap hit.

edit: Read more than the first sentence and I am guessing this is now satirical at all the nay sayers and I love it. Sorry was so quick to defend

Right, but who knew that a soon to be 28 year old recently injury prone winger was going to help lead the team to a championship? He even missed 30 games in his first full season here.

Ah hyperbole.. The facts for those who cannot defend the now.

I'm not defending the now, I'm attacking the past like everyone else, just further back. Why stop at 2014? I'm half kidding/half serious in doing it. Just saying we don't know.

If they don't win in 2012, with the way things went, the Richards trade goes down as one of the worst in team history. That's as big a risk as the Lucic trade. Probably bigger. Did we know the Carter trade would work out that well? What would've happened if a defenseman actually got hurt or missed a game in the 2012 playoffs? They weren't as deep as they were when they had both Johnson and Voynov. Penner was garbage that year until the unknown results in the playoffs.

The now is...it is what it is. If Kopitar was having a normal average season, maybe we're not all complaining about last summer, or going back and looking at every move made up to whatever year we choose, and lamenting at what could've been. Everything is what could've been. What if the Kings take Karlsson in 2008? What if Williams misses 30 games every year? What if they keep their 1st rounders in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016? For all we know the Kings are better than they were with how it all actually unfolded. Maybe they're better than an 8th seed, or don't have to come back from down 0-3, or win three Game 7's on the road.

There is a point in time where a GM has to go for it, Dean was amazing. And there is a point in time where he has to figure out a way of keeping it going taking emotion out of the equation.

Truth of the matter is some guys are builders, and others who are better at maintaining and tweaking so it does not become stale. Dean was great at the building piece, I question if he has the skill set to maintain things. Guess will see..
