What are Muzzin's and Martinez's +/- when they play together as a pairing versus apart? I'm also curious how much of Muzzins drop off is no longer playing with Doughty.

Muzzin was 100% fine away from Doughty last year. It's a popular argument outside of LA depending on the narrative--Muzzin is the best d-man in the league and carries Doughty, or Muzzin is only good because of Doughty. Both, of course, are garbage, and we have a year + of data to show that on top of the eye test.

I don't have the time to dig them up right now but I will later. The splits aren't as bad as you would think. They are with Martinez, though. It's pretty fascinating. They have one of the BEST (maybe THE best but haven't checked in a bit) expected GF% in the league as a pairing, but have one of the ACTUAL worst as a pairing. But previously, Muzzin away from Doughty took advantage of the softer matchups. As pointed out, that's not at all what we're getting this year from either guy, and those two and Doughty looked like superheroes last year, so it's baffling.

This is where I complain about the coaching again but yeah :P

My opinion has always been that Muzzin and Martinez are equal. Muzzin is a little better defensively, Martinez is a little better offensively and neither of them are a real #2 like Voynov was. However Muzzin is always seen and hyped as the better player so he has higher trade value and should be traded over Martinez. It would also be great to make a move that would allow Martinez to switch to his proper side. Trading both and have and all rookie defense is not a good option except to a Hfboards GM.

Imperfect stat and all that, but damn that -17 from Muzzin isn't good. Martinez at -15. No other defensemen that have played a decent amount of games are in negative territory. Mostly on the road too, where one or both seems to be on the ice for every goal against, with little to no counter-balance. Muzzin has 5 points on the road this year, but 20 in each of the last 2 seasons. He looks like he's lugging a 50 pound rock while he's skating this year. If he's not hurt, then I don't know what. His leg, lower back, something. So often it's slow motion with him.

Muzzin and Martinez were supposed to be two of the givens on the team. Plenty of other questions heading into the season, but those two weren't seen as being in that category. Sucks because Forbort has come in and done pretty well, but that's canceled out by Muzzin and Martinez struggling. If it's not one thing it's another with the team this year.

In my opinion no two players are more responsible for the Kings' poor record this season than Martinez and Muzzin. The number of turnovers that Martinez alone has made that resulted in huge goals against has cost the Kings at least five points in the standings. He has made up for it by scoring, but not enough. It seems like he got used to playing the scorer at the beginning of the season and just forgot he plays defense. Almost nightly Martinez has been caught on the wrong side of a forward for a scoring chance against. I'm a big fan of Marty, but I can barely watch his nonchalant passes and poor defense anymore. He needs to be protected on the third pairing with McNabb and brought out for power play minutes.

I can't for the life of me figure out what has happened to Muzzin. He just doesn't look like his head's in the game when he's not paired with Doughty.

Goals against per 60 minutes of 5 vs 5:
Martinez or Muzzin apart, 1.9
Martinez and Muzzin together, 3.7

Why Sutter continues to put these two together I do not understand.

I know it's going to sound ridiculous.

But the right move is trading Carter this summer. I know, he has been unreal for the Kings this season, and has been a legit Top 10 player in the NHL. But he is on the wrong side of 30, he has an amazing contract that increases his value and his overall value is never going to be higher.

The Kings days of contending are over, and by the time they are back Carter is going to well past his prime, strike now and get a blue chip prospect and a good NHL'er under 25.

Forgot to even include the fact that he has 2 SC rings and an Olympic Gold. Carter's value this summer would be through the roof.

An extremely, extremely difficult move for anyone to make, but I think the time would be right.

No, trading Carter is not ridiculous at all. He is the only Kings player over 30 worth something of real value on the trade market.

My asking price would be a stud young goalie capable of becoming a #1, a great young center, and a #1 pick.

Some interesting things by the mayor yesterday on NHL radio. He thinks that come next season Lombari will not be the GM as his contract is up and that Rob Blake will take over. Talks about possible deal with Avs that they talked about Martinez, Kempe and a 2nd for Landeskog. Also he said in the summer don't be surprised if you here about Voynov possibly coming back to the Kings.
Very interesting stuff.

I've been saying this all season.

Whoa that's some pretty wild news. As much as I've been critical of DL, I would not want to see Blake take his place, I don't trust when players become GM's (Colorado and Tampa).

I think Voynov is on a 10 year entry ban. This can be waived if he chooses to go that route.

he self deported on a plea deal so that negates most (if not all) of those restrictions. he should only have to go through the regular work visa channels if he was never officially a felon due to his plea... (not sure about Canada since you can be denied entry on even misdemeanor charges) but for all intents and purposes he could be technically brought back IF the NHL owners waived him through and NHLPA allowed the reinstatement of his contract (which is in limbo and not currently terminated) but after the wold cup fiasco it will never happen... it is an interesting idea though.

Agreed. Would rather have Futa as GM. 2 past Blake quotes scare me considerably.
1. after acquiring McBadd, he said "we identified Brayden as the best defenseman, not playing in the NHL" Ouch.
2. When speaking about Mersch. (regarding his power moves and net presence)
"Michael is great in front of the net on powerplays and will also be one of the best in the NHL on pwerplays" (I may have the wording a bit off, but he actually said Mersch would be one of the best in the NHL on powerplays)

Q: why is Blake rarely quoted, or interviewed? Seems weird.

Entry bans don't need convictions. No contests are treated by immigration the same as a guilty plea.

That waiver application in the link below is necessary for entry bans. Once a waiver is obtained, then he can go through the work visa process anew.

Voynov coming back is intriguing. IF that has a strong chance, Id be open to making the most of both Muzzin and Martinez is potential trades.

I know he gets a lot of hate, but i dont want to lose Lewis. Id rather lose Dowd.

Can we please trade King and make something of him? How about Clifford for anything? Nolan as well.

Brodz, Kempe and Mersch to end the year would look good up to me.

Injured. Won't be back until mid to late March.

Been wanting this for a while. Won't bring anything big back, but in soft draft years there seems to always be a guy in rounds 4-6 that ends up being a stud. The more lottery tickets you have the better the chances right?

The one move that has me worried but wouldn't shock me is DL resigning King. Just typing this gave me acid reflux. Not sure I'd be able to drink that pain away.
