I was irritated that the kings continued to play their system after they lost the guys that made it work. Guys like Mitchell, regher, scuderi before he dropped off. Guys like stoll and Williams. Now it occurred to me with all the bottom line grinders on the team they have no choice but to continue to play defensively. They can't open it up because they don't have enough skilled guys on the team.

Gabby is imo the worst contract on the team, way worse than browns. If he's not scoring he's useless. Brown while still overpaid can still do things.

They would be a contender imo with another physical shut down defender and to replace gabby with a true 1st line winger. Unfortunately it's impossible since no one would want gabby, and there are no assets to get what they need. I don't see this team improving anytime soon.

Good post. Pretty much sums it up.

With so many bubble teams I think it will be hard to make an early trade before the deadline.

I'm wondering when the first shoe will drop?

I'm also wondering if DL is worried about his job at all?

Does Quick's injury buy him another year?

If he's on the hot seat, does that come into his trade deadline strategy?

just be sellers, this team got bullied and beaten. esp vs a scrub team like florida. sickening

Ehhh, Florida just got Barkov and Hubie back to now get their 'real' team for the first time this season much like us. They've been hot as hell and just moved into a playoff spot. They've won 7 of the last 8 (only loss to us, of course) and have scored FOUR goals per game in that stretch. We dominated them last night and they won by sheer Budaj ****ery. Obviously the time for moral victories is past but had we not suffered the Coyotes loss (on BUdaj as well frankly) I doubt anyone would be mad about this one.

This team is too good to just peter out imo. I don't begrudge anyone for an opposing opinion in that regard, but calling Florida a 'scrub team' ignores their situation.

Are they? It's tough to know anymore. The 14-15 and 15-16 seasons, when they've basically petered out, would disagree. Their -8 W/L differential in regulation this year, the first time they're looking at a minus since the 08-09 season, would disagree.

I did say in my opinion.

I think the personnel is younger, faster, and better. The defensive metrics are better. The biggest issue has been injuries and compounded by goaltending, not sloppy all around play in general.

I think everything hinges on Kopitar/Toffoli and to a lesser extent Gaborik finding production and Quick's form. But I'm thinking those things give us enough of a boost to get over the hump. I know that's optimistic but I think it's reasonably optimistic, not blindly.

I see what you did there.........

I don't think they're actually playing that bad. No breaks lately, and the goaltending has taken a serious dip.

On the expansion draft, I see Lewis as the most likely gone. I do not see the Kings protecting Dowd, like a lot think around here. I don't see Vegas taking a 26yo, 1 year NHL'er with only 1 year left until UFA, with 3rd line upside. I also do not see Mcnabb as a target. 1 year left on his contract, as well, and he is still not a seasoned player on the ice.

Watching last night's game vs ANA, I kept looking at the lines. Some guys are in terrible slumps and they're playing on lines that don't give them opportunities to score. Put 70's line back together (try to get Toff going). Put Gabs with Kopi and maybe one can get going. Having King on Kopi's line makes no sense.

It does to Sutter, he sees and has always seen King in a special light. And it was his reward for getting 3 goals in his last 7 games (which was in an article I read last night somewhere)

King is tied for 5th in goals on the team.

It's combination of players having a bad season and players in decline. Not Sutter's fault and I don't blame him for shuffling players around trying to find something that works.

Kopitar has been held pointless in 27 of the 52 games he's played in this year.
Gaborik, 24 of 36.
Toffoli, 23 of 39.

When one player or a few players suck, it's a slump.

When it's almost everyone, it's coaching/systematic.

Budaj has been better than anyone could've thought, but Zatkoff has been terrible. Brown looks to be playing better again. Carter, Pearson, more than fine. Forbort has been good. Lewis might have a career year.

Is there something systemic about Muzzin's season so far? The guy looks like he just can't skate half the time. He was fine last year. Is Martinez off because of the system? Maybe because he has to play the right side, but that's just necessity this year. Gaborik is 35 years old now, and hasn't lit the world on fire most of the time since his 11-12 season, with Mr. Block All Shots as his coach. Does Sutter tell Doughty to take a big slap shot that gets blocked all the time?

There are examples either way. Maybe Kopitar is playing so conservatively because Budaj is in net. Maybe that's what Sutter tells him to do. So for all the trust Sutter has in playing Budaj every game, he really doesn't have that much trust in him.

Tough set of circumstances all around.

Having King on the roster makes no sense.

I am a King critic myself, but at this point, it makes all the sense in the world to have him on the roster and play him on the top line. He has been going to the net, retrieving pucks on the cycle, and getting those dirty goals. If Kopitar would play like him, he wouldn't be in this slump.

The funny thing is, I think this is the best lineup we have had since the 2014 cup win, but you can tell by the on-ice play that this team is playing with no drive and purpose. It seems like they are just going through the motions of playing Sutter hockey.

Imperfect stat and all that, but damn that -17 from Muzzin isn't good. Martinez at -15. No other defensemen that have played a decent amount of games are in negative territory. Mostly on the road too, where one or both seems to be on the ice for every goal against, with little to no counter-balance. Muzzin has 5 points on the road this year, but 20 in each of the last 2 seasons. He looks like he's lugging a 50 pound rock while he's skating this year. If he's not hurt, then I don't know what. His leg, lower back, something. So often it's slow motion with him.

Muzzin and Martinez were supposed to be two of the givens on the team. Plenty of other questions heading into the season, but those two weren't seen as being in that category. Sucks because Forbort has come in and done pretty well, but that's canceled out by Muzzin and Martinez struggling. If it's not one thing it's another with the team this year.

Why don't we just trade both Martinez and Martinez so no one can complain. Trade Martinez this year so we only have to protect 3 defenceman. Trade Muzzin next summer contingent on signing Shattenkirk.

Clears up cap space to sign Shattenkirk

Next years defence , and yes I want to see youth

Doughty - Forbort
Shattenkirk - Gravel
LaDue - McNabb.

Offensive right side, defensive left side. There is no reason Gravel should not be playing now. Maybe McNabb is grabbed by LV but finding a bottom pairing left hand shot Dman should not be hard. Protect Doughty, Forbert and Muzzin.

Just trying to figure a way to stay competitive, refill the prospect line,

Martinez, King, Clifford, and even Lewis can be put on the block as this year needs to be written off.

Yes it is out there, probably because I am bent out of shape watching us suck the last few weeks. (Years) actually but something needs to be done.

Oh ya, I am trading Lewis as I believe Vegas takes him and I really need them to not have that option and pick Brown, Gabby, or McNabb

And yes, it doesn't fix Kopitar, Toffoli, Gabby, Muzzin, who have all, sucked this year. Just frustrated
