16.7 million per year is ridiculous.. if that happens we will have zero space to do anything.
If he wants 16.7 we're f***ed16.7 million per year is ridiculous.. if that happens we will have zero space to do anything.
Anything in the 13s has probably left the building.I think we're looking at 13.5 or 14ish. I'm fine with that.
We're just guessing. He may surprise us.Anything in the 13s has probably left the building.
I dont agree on the sentence "he is More than capable of brining us to the second round".... He has not shown the things real warriors do to take teams to the second round. Thats eating pucks, checking, hitting, talking and yelling. Roaring. Doing something special. Even fighting if that's what it takes. In fact matthews has laughed at mont players at times when they have challenged him... there is video evidence of it. So that has to go and change before we can say: "he is More than capable". No he is not. Has not shown anything that proves otherwise. Other players have. People can change though, and its possible. Not probable thoughAfter seeing what MacKinnon got, there's no question Matthews deserved more for individual stats, but he's still never gotten past the first round. He's also got top dollar on his first contract.
Slight raise is somewhere around 12-13.5. I would be happy with $13m. I'd be thrilled with $12m (assuming the rational is MacKinnon has won his team a cup therefore he has proven his worth in the playoffs). Matthews still hasn't shown he can get us out of the first round (he's more than capable but it hasn't come to fruition yet) so does he leave money on the table to help Dubas build a better all around team?
Or does he take us to the cleaners and him and his agent demand the max $16.3m. I would say $14m+ would extend us into this continued cap restraint we're seeing now, where we are complaining about having no other stars other than our big 5, and continue keep looking for bargain bin value contracts and hoping for a gem.
A little early to talk about but with MacKinnon being the highest paid player into he league just now, it doesn't hurt to speculate what it could be and how it will effect us after.
An AAV of 15M sure sounds like a tough one with MacKinnon's 12.6M currently serving as the bar. While I'd absolutely prefer the idea of signing Matthews for the full term this time around, I'd probably look to sacrifice something there in order to bring that AAV down by 1-2M (and I'd hope for the latter).Nick Kypreos is reporting Matthews wants $15M x 8. I can't find the original source, only that a few hockey news outlets are reporting on it (slow day, I guess). Also mentions Leafs won't give him that and it will be a long negotiation.
What say you?
Sign?
Trade?
Kypreos doesn't know jack?
Less term would increase the price, not decrease it.While I'd absolutely prefer the idea of signing Matthews for the full term this time around, I'd probably look to sacrifice something there in order to bring that AAV down by 1-2M (and I'd hope for the latter).
Lots of teams win this way!Matthews for 8x15 is an easy sign. You pay superstars, superstar money.. it's really that simple. This isn't a video game and he's not taking 10m to suffice some random dude on a hockey forum.
They’ve already taken off 5 yrs of being competitive. If they take off any more, Detroit, Buffalo and maybe Ottawa will surpass them.I'm a Habs fan born and raised in Toronto. I honestly have followed the leafs almost as much as the Habs since I was a kid. I use to think Matthews would ditch the leafs and either go home or go to a sunbelt market. I truly believe he'll stay now. But I think he gets 14-15 AAV honestly. MacKinnon isnt even the best player on his team and honestly not as good as Matthews but still got over 12.5. People shit on the leafs cap situation without bringing up the cap being affected by covid. But at the same time, it would probably just mean they could sign hyman. But cap flexibility has been the issue for the Dubas regime. In that regard, after signing Matthews which I think is 75% probability, I do not think they resign Nylander. Best move to make is to take a year or so off of being competitive to retool and restock the pipeline so next time they start competing, they can bring in cheap contracts when necessary and to offset the high contracts
