Speculation: 2 years away. Do you think Matthews accepts a slight raise OR takes us to the cleaners next contract?

Basically 6m increase for Matthews, Marner and Nylander, saving 3.5m on JT.

Absolute must to get that Tavares $11m off the books on schedule, if he wants to stay after that he’s gotta accept his next contract will be in the $2-$3m range.

I really wish the cap would jump significantly but Bettman is keeping a tight lock on that so his pet project in Arizona doesn’t go bankrupt. Whenever the questions asked he has a coy smile and does his little head-shake lawyer-speak and how it’s on the players to decide about that, their escrow, etc. Meanwhile the NBA and MLB and NFL have a clearly defined cap escalation plan in place. NHL is a joke when it comes to many things but this is probably the worst.

I think Matthews and Marner will take slight raises and Tavares will sign for like $2-3 million. The only person who will take them to the cleaners is Nylander.

They know in order to have a good team they have to.
 
2-3 million for Tavares is a bit ridiculous the guy is still on basically PPG level maybe next year he hits a bit of a wall but if on the open market this summer he would still get 8-9 million for 4-5 years,. so expecting a 2-3 million deal seems to good to be true, I would expect around 6-7 for maybe 2 years and then get down to that level.
 
For perspective, the two Cup finalist have 70% of their season ahead of them. I’d say it’s far too early to be re-signing any of them, considering they’ve had a hot December in the past. Dubas included.
 
If Matthews is asking for 15x8 that gives me reasonable levels of optimism that a deal will get done and it will be a fair one. That isn't really that ridiculous of an ask and if both sides move to each other it will be even better.

15 x 7. Equals 13.1 x8. If you get 13.4 x8 that’s probably it. Matched his number. Gets a few extra mill.

Marner. 10.

Then JT is 5-6 mill.

Reminds me of a funny story, one of my GFs had lived some time in England before coming back to Canada, in an attempt to see how much I love her, she asked if I would move with her to England if she were to ever move back, without hesitation I said "no" lol look on her face was priceless. She asked why , and I told her I have friends here and a band.

He's not making a decision like that based on where his 'girlfriend' currently lives. Does he even have a girlfriend? Guy can get any girl he wants in Toronto and he hasn't mentioned or been pictured with any girl in years.

Matthews is not worth 15. Idgaf. You can play all the defense you want but if your not too 3 in it's as a fwd and topntwo in goals this year, you can't command that :/

The problem is they cut the rebuild too short. Signing Tavares should've never happened. Toronto was better off trying to get wildcard spots and drafting decently. The cupboards were bare and then you decide to sign a huge FA. Then that signing directly influenced your other major contracts. There is a strategic time and place to sign major free agents to complete your team. Toronto was not there yet. It sucks but because you didn't follow through on the process and ended up rushing it, the leafs will have to make up for there missed opportunity of building from within to sustain a competitive window. Good news is Matthews and Marner are only 25 so you probably got 8 more years of a competive window. As much as a meme the leafs have become, even as a Habs fan, I'm a Torontonian and although I only like the raptors, I cheer for all Toronto sports to do well enough but the plan and process of this organization in the last half decade has been dumb and badly rushed

That picture is so old lol. He had another girlfriend that he actually posted pictures with but they broke up years ago. Zero indication he has a girlfriend now.
