Speculation: 2 years away. Do you think Matthews accepts a slight raise OR takes us to the cleaners next contract?

Does Matthews accept slight raise or demands top dollar?

  • He accepts a slight raise to stay in Toronto and spread the cap around to help the team

  • He takes top dollar because he's earned it. Doesn't care about the cap that's Dubas's problem

The problem is they cut the rebuild too short. Signing Tavares should've never happened. Toronto was better off trying to get wildcard spots and drafting decently. The cupboards were bare and then you decide to sign a huge FA. Then that signing directly influenced your other major contracts. There is a strategic time and place to sign major free agents to complete your team. Toronto was not there yet. It sucks but because you didn't follow through on the process and ended up rushing it, the leafs will have to make up for there missed opportunity of building from within to sustain a competitive window. Good news is Matthews and Marner are only 25 so you probably got 8 more years of a competive window. As much as a meme the leafs have become, even as a Habs fan, I'm a Torontonian and although I only like the raptors, I cheer for all Toronto sports to do well enough but the plan and process of this organization in the last half decade has been dumb and badly rushed
They‘ve been trying to dig out of that hole for four years.

The idea that Matthews would want 15 x 8
Means if he wanted to leave then it would be like
17.5 x 7.

Which I’m pretty sure is actually illegal by aav%

So if you go the other wat

15 x 7. Equals 13.1 x8. If you get 13.4 x8 that’s probably it. Matched his number. Gets a few extra mill.

Matty. 13.4
Nylander 9.6
Marner. 10.

Then JT is 5-6 mill.
If AM wants to leave, they can also do a sign and trade. If McCrimmon is still employed there’s a partner they could take to the cleaners.

That picture is so old lol. He had another girlfriend that he actually posted pictures with but they broke up years ago. Zero indication he has a girlfriend now.

Literally no recent pictures of them and that site hardly screams credibility.

Anyways, this discussion is a bit pointless lol. Who cares who his girlfriend is.

Dunno, weird year if they plan on re-upping him this summer. He's having a disappointing season by his standards so far. McDavid has almost twice the goals and points. If Matthews is looking for top dollar, maybe we should be looking at McDavid instead for that money? I mean, that's how an investor in any other industry would be thinking. What's sacred about a hockey player? Let's say we have another disappointing playoff, do you consider trading him next year to a contender while at the same time sending a signal out to McDavid that the Leafs will be in the running if available?

when does his no trade clause start? After July 1st, I assume.

If Matthews is asking for 15x8 that gives me reasonable levels of optimism that a deal will get done and it will be a fair one. That isn't really that ridiculous of an ask and if both sides move to each other it will be even better.

If the 8 years is the ask it gives me the confidence that he wants to keep building his career here in Toronto and perhaps they can move that $15 million into slightly lower numbers. Maybe mid to high $13's and call it a day.

Matthews 14-15 aav for 5 years.

Marner 13-13.5 aav for 5 or 6 years

Nylander 10.5-11 aav for 8 years

Prepare yourselves

Exactly. I would be more concerned if there were reports that there is nothing coming from his side then a specific number he is looking for today. If we get him in the high 13's over 8 years with the cap increasing it isn't really that big of a difference to what we already have him budgeted at on his current contract.

Auston's current deal should be 8 years in length in order to get C.H.% 14.64 and Leafs shouldn't be worrying out $15 mil AAV as they would have 3 more years of 11.634 mil additional.

Matthews current C.H.% is the 4th highest in the NHL and his is only deal at 5 years, where all the rest are based on 8 years terms or more.

Feel like Marner is going to stack himself up to Auston again in order to try to get the same deal or somewhat similar, and after this season he probably won't be far off with that belief.

14x8 for Matthews
12.5x8 for Marner
9x8 for Nylander
7.5x3 for JT

Basically 6m increase for Matthews, Marner and Nylander, saving 3.5m on JT.

These are the numbers I would try and get their next contracts around.

I think this years playoffs will determine a lot of this teams future. Based on previous results those contracts all seem like disaster waiting to happen. I would aim to trade Matthews and get a haul before paying anything above 12.5-13

Gotta agree here. I think whichever team signs him will be taken to the cleaners. He's an incredible player, don't get me wrong, but if the Leafs can't get over the first round hump this time, the roster should be examined very closely.

This is a bit stalker-ish Mess

Might actually be worth waiting for negotiations to actually start before we start throwing numbers like 15 mil out there...

Matthews will have the highest aav in the league the moment he signs his new contract. by how much though is still very much up in the air.

Unless AM done something in the playoffs like Conf Finals, he ain’t getting a bigger deal than Mack, who just signed a few months ago after leading his team passed the 1st round a few times and a Cup with the cap apparently only 1mil more.
If AM signs two summers from now, that’s a diff story as Leafs will be competing with other teams due to UFA.
Personally, unless AM wants out, he will sign this summer bc he knows the distractions from TO media and the constant question from the likes of Simmons in ‘are you going to sign…’ will be something that no players can bear.

If AM asks for more than Mack and McD with another disappointing 1st round exit. Need to think long and hard about making him the highest paid player in the league.

Even if the Leafs don’t have playoff success again this year, there is I’d say effectively zero chance he takes a dime less than MacKinnon, nor should he. He will be the highest paid player in the league for at least a short time. You can rest assured of that

Marner would currently have a very good case to make that argument. He's the best player on the team currently. Great timing for him, not such great timing for Matthews. Gonna be a weird summer IMO. Of course no one will care when we win the Cup this June. :)

Firmly disagree. I still think Matthews is the best player on the team, and while Marner isn’t far behind him, he doesn’t have the personal accolades to demand what Matthews will get.

If every man moved to a city where he happened to have a girlfriend there would be a lot of moving going on. Think back to when you had girlfriends, if you did! ;)

Yeah, I'm not sold on the idea of AM moving to be with his gf. Does he currently follow her around and reside in LA in the off-season?

Hard to disagree. No downside to this because there's no way to be wrong. Imagine having the problem of deciding which stud is better, Marner or Matthews.
