Prepare for all the "Zucarrello to Team X as UFA" on the main board similar to Lundqvist this year.

I'm sure it means that the Rangers need the cap space now, and that he believes he'll be ready to command a more lucrative deal when he builds on his success this season.

Makes sense. Sounds like Zucc is happy with this deal, that's also important. And once again he helps Slats, I guess Zucc will get his award a little later.

This isn't bad until it's bad. We have plenty of time to work out an extension. For now, the cap number helps us a lot.

That's the way I look at it. Zucc is doing the Rangers a favor with the one-year deal. If everything falls into place, come January 1, negotiations start on a multi-year deal.

Yup so if Brass gets a 1 year deal also then Zucc and Brass walk the bolts or the jackets then what? Oh don't worry we still have Tanner Glass, good thing we signed him.

Yes, that will completely be the fault of Glass and his 2% of the CURRENT cap contract that doesn't include any movement clauses

I swear

Even if they do, one more good year and hes gunna be wanting 5 mill +

Why is everything so short term with this front office?

Why does everyone have to be up for a new contract every offseason?

Terrible.

Zuccarello is a taking a chance by not accepting the longer term deal for less than his asking price. He needs to have another good year. Zuccarello has only done it for one season. He got a very good bump from $1.15M. The Rangers and Newport tried to get a long term deal. He wanted $4.5M to $5M.

Honestly can't fathom why you don't give him another million long term instead of risking him having an even better season this year and demanding 5 or even 6 mill +

This is a lose lose situation for the Rangers. Worst news of the offseason.

It doesn't get much better than this right here

Where are the Rangers finding $4.5M to give Zuccarello?

You know what's also short term?
Short term memory people have on Zucc

The guy's had 1 great NHL season. Before that, he had 34 points in 67 NHL games.
Signing a player like that to a long term contract is a huge risk.

With this deal, we risk losing him, but at least we don't risk ending up with a disaster of a contract

Comparable players, who signed longer contracts:

He played very well the last two playoffs :)

wow...they're saying he'd probably get a million more from arbitration. This shows Zucc is a good guy who thinks about his team, and he wants to be Sather's buddy

Lundqvist was going to be a group II in 2008. Not a group III. Zuccarello was going to get $3.5M in arbitration for one year. He didn't do the Rangers a favor.

yeah, I'm so off base

If he takes a step forward and puts up 70 points next season, you think he'll sign for $4.5 like he was asking for this time? Especially after he threw Sather a bone with a cheap 1 yr deal?

Let's say he put up 10 points next season

Whoops. Now we're stuck with 4.5mil for 5 years

This doesn't worry me very much. If they didn't have a long term extension lined up, Zucc would have gone to arbitration instead of giving them a 1 year discount.

What's so hard to understand? The Rangers get the low cap hit for this year and Zucc gets the opportunity for a bigger payday next year when the cap goes up. Win win situation.

Hehe, if it was that easy.

Zucc had zero pts in his first 9 games. He then worked himself up the line-up. His 5 on 5 and PP time will never go down, but it could go up. If he have a good year and get a bit of a bigger role, his numbers aren't going down. They are going up.

Zucc was argubly our best player all POs and most valuble forward all year. If he has a good year, we aren't looking at 4-5m per for 4-5 years. Not with the new tv-money and a Cap at 76-80m.

If you wanna guess at what Zucc would get, don't for a second think along the lines what he is worth. What other players signed for 2-3 years ago. Aim extremely high and throw out a number, then add a million or two to that number and you could get close. People thought Pouliot was worth 2.2m, might get 2.5m, then someone mentioned 3m but that was seen as high, and Pouliot signed at 4.5m.

An avg year from Zucc with few smaller injuries and he will get 5-6 million per. A good year from him and he will get 7 million per.

Slats could have locked up Zucc real cheap 6 month ago.

Slats could have locked up Zucc at 4.5m today.

What will he cost January 1? July 1?

Our most valuble forward.
