Where are the Rangers finding $4.5M to give Zuccarello?
Internet money?

I don't see why they couldn't.

This is really disappointing. The guy took a major low salary last season, was our best forward and energy player, and this is how we handle it? This guy's talent, passion and work ethic won't reduce any time soon. Should have locked him up, when the chance was there to do it and at what would likely be a great cap hit for seasons to come.

Let's say he put up 10 points next season

Whoops. Now we're stuck with 4.5mil for 5 years

do you REALLY think that he's going to put up 10 points next season? 20? 30? you play the odds in this scenario-- we're gonna have to pay him before the summer or we're going to be paying more than that. zucc was one of the most important players on this team all season.

this deal works for both parties. we had no other option. 4.5 for this season would've hurt our chances at signing brassard and kreider. zucc took one for the team here no doubt at all and if sather's smart he'll reward him for it on january 1st to encourage the kids to take similar actions.

zucc deserves a big contract if he repeats. i think he looked just as good under torts but he was so mismanaged that it's amazing he's not back in norway. this guy is a star and he's going to be til the day he retires.

Rangers will have to sort out over the course of this next season who they're going to keep. We can only handle so many big contracts. Whatever deals we make moving veterans whether it's Staal, Brassard or whoever is going to have to be made with $'s in mind--meaning younger, cheaper players coming back. Players like Kreider, Hagelin don't cost that much right now. Staal, Brassard may turn out to be more than they're worth to us.

St. Louis is another guy. He might not be worth his current cap hit for us next year. If he give a discount that might be another thing.

Anyway for now this deal works. I think Zuccarello really wants to be here.

He produced one year. That is it. Zucc was our best player this year. There is no doubting that. What if he only puts up 35-40 points this year? Should we have still gambled on him for 5x5? I don't think so.

That's not how gambling works.

Obviously if he puts up 40 points next year and we paid him then he's an overpaid 3rd liner.

But let me ask you, what if he comes in and puts up 70 points this year, and then we lose him?

We are never losing this player for nothing. Just like we didn't lose Callahan for nothing.

Second time now that he does the team a favor and signs a one year deal. I thought he would be rewarded after signing a low 1 year deal last year and he was the best ranger throughout the season. But no gratitude from Sather. But on the other hand i think Zucc would rather be on a team that can compete for the Cup than earning an extra mill a year. Its the trophies the real athletes play for.

I think we will without a doubt re-sign zucc long term I'm thinking 5mm per season at most. Probably somewhere in between 4.5 and 5. I think Brassard is a bit of an issue for us though. He's not worth 5.5 per year hopefully he gets talked down to 4.5-5 per as well.

Nice deal. Hopefully he can have another great season and we can basically give him MSL's contract going forward

We are never losing this player for nothing. Just like we didn't lose Callahan for nothing.

Except if Zucc leaves, its almost guaranteed not by his unwillingness to drop his salary, which is what Callahan refused to do.

No arbitration, Rangers leading point scorer, McDonald award winner, locker room favorite, playoff performer. You're a special kind of pessimistic sadist if you don think he'll get offered long term in january.

There isnt any reason why the Rangers would consider trading him. He's part of the teams future, with Stepan, Kreider, McDonagh, Girardi and Hank. And Nash, sadly, unless he delivers the goods next season

How the **** do you only sign this guy for 1 year?

just add to the list of players we need to sign or keep next season..

Stepan
Staal
Hagelin
St Louis
now Zucc.

great

Lundqvist was going to be a group II in 2008. Not a group III. Zuccarello was going to get $3.5M in arbitration for one year. He didn't do the Rangers a favor.

Hanks group status isn't the point. He was arbitration eligible. He settled on a one year deal at a low cap hit in order to work on an extension without the worry of the cap crunch the Rangers were under that season or the acrimony of an arbitration hearing.

It's pretty much the same situation. Zuccarello has some more leverage because of UFA, but the concept is similar.

They can negotiate a long-term deal in January. I think this is actually a slick move by Sather. He gets him for a cheap cap-hit this season, and then will give him a longer term extension in January. It's a clever way of circumventing the cap by not having this year's cap-hit affect the long term average.

Sometimes you've got to read between the lines, fellas.

This is a smart move.

Thanks for the advice about learning to read between the lines. After next season, with another productive season, his cap hit will be significantly higher.

This is an example of something that frustrates me to no end about the Rangers cap management. They refuse to leverage cheap No-Arb/RFA years to bring down cap hit. And the reason is because they need every last dollar to pursue the next big UFA, or overpaid bottom-6 UFA.

Let's say Zucc signs a 4 year deal next summer at 5, 5, 5.5, 5.5. $5.25M cap hit. If they didn't need every last penny this season for other stupid ****, they could sign him for 5 years at 3.5, 5, 5, 5.5, 5.5. $4.9M cap hit. Maybe he takes a million less for the security of extra years right now - $4.7M cap hit. Maybe next year he realizes he could get $6.5M as a UFA and he walks like Stralman, Boyle, and Pouliot.

People said the same thing about Callahan. The Rangers would have traded Girardi as well.

How do you know? People weren't calling Callahan a selfish ***** after he signed his last RFA deal either...

Because this is the second time Zucc has taken a pay cut to stay with the team. If he has gone through arbitration this year he would have gotten more money. This contract just sets up a long term deal. He took a cut last year to help re-sign Stepan. That's just the type of guy he is.

As for the deal, very good cap wise. But I think zuccarello is primed for another big season, so I worry he'll test free agency.
