People said the same thing about Callahan. The Rangers would have traded Girardi as well.

You kinda circumvented my first line in that post which negated what you just said :) Callahan left because he mistook his value to the Rangers organization. That seemingly isnt the case here

Because this is the second time Zucc has taken a pay cut to stay with the team. If he has gone through arbitration this year he would have gotten more money. This contract just sets up a long term deal. He took a cut last year to help re-sign Stepan. That's just the type of guy he is.

And if he plays great again this season he'll have even more than he would in arbitration. Stop with this "that's the type of guy he is." These players are all about the money, that's why a majority of RFA contracts get caught up on years. These players want to reach UFA as fast as possible.

??? Callahan was traded because he wouldn't sign a contract the Rangers felt was doable. What's different?

so basically the people in favor of this deal are admitting that Zucc isn't as good as he was last season?.. well herés the "prove it" deal.. and when he does, that 4.5M per goes out the windoww.

Not everyone. Take Tom Brady, for example. Takes a huge pay cut so the Patriots can sign better players. Some players prefer to win and take less because they are getting payed a hell of a lot of money regardless.

I'm in favour of the deal and zucc is better than his stats suggested last yr IMO. Having a low cap for this yr allows another deadline acquisition perhaps to prime for a final playoff run with MSL and Boyle, before a mini retooling phase IMO.

When Tom Brady starts playing hockey let me know, until then that's an apple and oranges comparison

They must have decided that this was what they needed to do to get under the cap for this year. I'm not fond of the situation, but with the cap rising every year there is no reason they can't give him the proper raise if and when the time comes.

MSL and Zucc are UFA at the same time, now, and you wonder if they'll both be re-signed.

Tom Brady is worth over $100 million, there is no comparison to be made between him and any hockey player.

Nice to see some of you get it.

This was our chance to get value in having Zucc under 5 mill for 4 years.

We get a nice deal for one year, then what.

Huge list of players to retain after this year. Can't wait for yet another retooled roster because this front office only signs guys for 1-2 years at a time.

There's always 29 other teams…

Oh yeah, I'm a bad fan because I say negative things.

Sorry I'm not the type of fan who thinks everything is daisys when the team makes a mistake.

Guess I'm not a TRUE FAN like you

No you're just the type of fan who post childish "sky is falling" posts after everything

This is how the Rangers do things, get over it already.

And for the most part, I really don't have a problem with signing our RFAs to bridge deals to save cap.

But this is a different circumstance. Really think we had a chance to get some long term value here and now that doesn't seem likely.

But what's the difference between now and January when we can extend him again? Which I think we will. I think this deal helps us for this year since we are in a squeeze, which probably be the case next year with the expected large cap raise which was supposed to happen this offseason. I think this is a smart deal.

You think hes going to take the same $4.5 he was asking for if hes having another good year?

Risky move considering I'm sure the Rangers want to lock him up long-term. But my god, is that AAV sexy for a year of Zuccarello

If we can lock him up in January for anywhere from $4-$4.5m on four or more years (considering all things stay the same). Damn.

Welcome back, Zuccy!

Possibly. I think the Rangers and himself expect him to have a good season again. This contract IMO was just to help the cap situation. Worst comes to worst we pay him 5-5.5 AAV which he is worth anyway.

Would've loved to seen him sign for term, but Zucc has a chance at $6M+ if he hits 70 pts as an upcoming UFA and the TV deal getting added in next year.

Would hate to see Zucc and Kreids get short term deals and Brassard get a long term contract.

I think Uncle Glen views the secret sauce to success in NY is by having guys in their walk years.

Worked in 2012, worked in 2014. Zucc is a guy I think you bank term on. Even 3 years at $4.1M would've been good.

Aren't the Rangers at 48 SPCs now? Don't they have to move a contract to sign all 3 remaining RFAs?

Who do we sign first (or at all) next year now?

Stepan?
MSL?
Staal?
Zucc?
Hagelin?
probably add Brassard to that list?

and you thought this off season was hard for the Rangers to keep their players?

One of the few guys around the league who deserved what was coming to him as an FA takes a discount. Does anyone know Zucc's family background? This dude sure doesn't seem worried about money/security. I really hope it works out well for both him and the team in the end.

I think in Scandinavian countries making the most money possible all the time is not the most important thing, IMO it's just the culture. North America, especially the US is quite different. (And this coming from someone that identifies more with US culture).
