I tend to agree. Next summer is going to be very busy. To me it's simple. If Zuccarello can replicate his success this year, he's worth the long term investment. If his production dips or he's rendered a one year wonder, the Rangers will be letting him go or getting him back cheaper than it would've cost this summer.

Very ballsy move by Sather. I don't like that Zuccarello can be a UFA next summer.

Cant see him going to FA if he performs.
He is one out of very few athletes I believe when he says he wants to be with his team. This is second time in a row he has taken a 1 year deal to help out his team in cap distress.

I am guessing he signs mid january

The odd thing about this contract to me from Zucc's POV is he almost definitely would have gotten more of this for one year if he didn't sign this and went to arbitration.

prob wants a long term deal with the rangers. taking sather to arb would make that difficult.

The Ultimate Team Player, unlike others who say they love to play for the Rangers and then bolt to the highest payer

Im guessing Zucc took less money, with an understanding that the Rangers will sign him to an extension in January ? To help with the cap issue

This is a great figure either way

I hope this is the case, as we saw last year the Rangers have no problem locking up their talent way before free agency (McD, Giardi, Henrik).

Wow great number for this season. I'm betting they already have an agreement for an extension around 5/5

I'm not sure if they have an agreement but it wouldn't shock me if they're in the same ballpark. Based off that Brooks tweet, I could see the Rangers telling him to sign the 1 year deal for the cheaper cap hit since it's an RFA year and they'll extend him for the big money once next year rolls around.

Chances are he probably would have been paid around this amount in the first year of a long term extension since it's an RFA year so they're just splitting it into two separate contracts now.

Zucc doesn't want arbitration, can't be there anyway he's in Norway. I'm sure he's disappointed, hoped for a long term agreement.

Now he'll accept the 3.5 and kiss the Rangers goodbye next year.

Brooks is saying they will work on an extension? I guess Rangers wanted him low this year and then will give him more with the cap going up? Possibly because of how much Brassard wants?

Kind of risky if he decides to go to UFA but it gives them some flexibility if both sides want to get a long term deal done before then.

Nice work. Only a couple more guys left to sign. I'm sure they'll get a longer deal in place after the new year.

One of the few guys around the league who deserved what was coming to him as an FA takes a discount. Does anyone know Zucc's family background? This dude sure doesn't seem worried about money/security. I really hope it works out well for both him and the team in the end.

Where are the Rangers finding $5M to pay Zuccarello with all of their other free agents?

Right now or next year?

If he at least repeats his 2013-2014 performance next year he most definitely will be worth $5 mill per year in a long term contract. He's an excellent player, if they are tight on cap space they should be looking to cut costs with other players not him

Working class, blue collar background.
