You forgot our best forward lol...

I think you have to add Pageau (good for 40+ pts) and Smith (25 goals last year) to get a real taste of the depth that the Sens have.

C'mon, Pageau is not "good" for 40+ points unless there are major injuries.

Zibanajad will be better than Stepan next season.

He may produce more offense but I'm not sure he will be better. I don't know what people think Zibanejad is but he has some holes in his game he needs to shore up before he is better than Stepan or even Brassard.

Pouliot-Brass-Zucc was technically our 3rd line.

If Zibanajad produces more than Stepan he'll be better. Stepan is slow as **** and not that great defensively. Zibanajad will overtake him by next season.

I guess if you think there's only 15 #1C's. I'm not convinced any of Backes, Statsny or Lethera are all that better yet STL was a contender. Depth is far more important than having a franchise centre when it comes to competing for a cup.

But STL has much better deph, one of the best if not the best d-core in the league, and they have star players like Tarasenko up front etc. But in the end how far have STL actually gone over this last years?

It's never going to be a group that scares the living **** out of opposing teams, unless Stone takes it to yet another level, but the Karlsson factor puts the Sens offense into the top 5-10 range imo. They will score by commite, and they will score a lot.

It would be hilarious to see another top 6 player from the Sens get traded and then heralded as the next big thing by Hfboards.

Everyone on Ottawa sucks until the day they get traded elsewhere.

Never change HF

Stone inflated Smiths stats he is an average third liner. Stone is underrated Smith is overrated on HF its a wash.

He's a safer bet for 30 being the #3 guy but providing an injury to one of the two guys infront of him you know he will be able to step up and make an impact.

Decent possibility. The thing that strikes me as odd is the fact that Ottawa is far from a contender, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to trade for an older player, even if he's better defensively at the moment. Unless they honestly think Zibanejad has peaked.

Just IMO, but OTT has to pay Brassard $10m for the next 3 years. Zibby is likely to make significantly more than that during that same timeframe. Agree that is kind of shortsighted, but it is what it is. Unless I am reading too much into the deal (and the DP deal) it would seem that OTT is planning on maximizing their competiveness during that timeframe.

Please define "more benefit"....

That seems to be the running monologue, but not sure that I understand…

The Sens are a young team that is desperate to move from being a bubble team into one of the better teams in the east. They also desperately needed a LH playmaking center. Most their good players are in the primes of their careers, so it makes complete sense to try and make a push towards becoming a contender, even if it cost Zibby and 2018 2nd round pick (which is of absolutely no use to them in the next 5 years).

People keep saying they dont get it from Ottawa's perspective, or that they aren’t close enough to being contenders to try and improve their team. I think that’s complete BS. Unless you’re at the very start of a rebuild, which the Sens are clearly not, any time you can improve your team by adding an impact player in exchange for a wildcard and a future 2nd round pick, that’s a move you have to make.

If they didnt start making some proactive moves towards becoming a better team, then eventually they would have started to lose assets like Karlsson. You can’t wait forever for the picks and prospects to save the day.

I think this is spot on. The Senators need to take a step forward this year. Although Zibanejad has been improving every year, it's been a slower growth than anticipated. For the past 2 years now Ottawa has been expecting him to break out but have seen a smaller, steady improvement instead. A lot of the Sens' success would have depended on his development this coming year and I just feel that management wanted to know what to expect out of the 2C position instead of waiting to see how Zibanejad progresses this year.

To add to this, I think that this line of thinking was reinforced by what happened to Ottawa's most recent prospects that graduated to the NHL. Greening and Chiasson flamed out after showing top 6 potential. Last year, they entered the season relying on Cowen, Ceci and Wiercioch to take big steps forward playing top 4 minutes on top of expecting improvement out of Zibanejad, Stone, and Hoffman in the top 6 and that did not turn out well.

With this trade, Ottawa is much better prepared to compete for the playoffs and to even make some noise if they can make it. Phaneuf rounds out the top 4, Brassard improves the top 6 and I think it's safe to say that Stone and Hoffman have established themselves. The only young players that they are relying on to take strides are Ceci and Wideman on defense and Lazar and Paul/Puempel/Dzingle (whoever cracks the line-up) up front. I believe Ottawa likes the way that they are set up now much better than having to rely on prospect development to determine the fate of their season's success.

I didn't compare Zibanejad to Seguin at all. My point was that I couldn't help but think of that video when reading that post.

Do you picture that video everytime you hear a trade is announced? What you said literally makes no sense, because hockey trades involving players of Zibanejads caliber happen all the time...

When someone trades a young super prospect for a good older player and some other parts, you can cue the video.

I'm not saying Ottawa is at the point STL was/is just saying you can be a contender without an elite #1.

If you'll notice with the previously posted HERO charts, Stepan has always made his line mates better (even if it was only marginally last year).

He's still our de facto #1 even if he doesn't fit the expectations of most. Rangers fans know what they have in him.

I would take Stepan over Brassard but Brassard fits what Ottawa needs more.

Zibanajad will be better than Stepan next season.

I dont think so, very very slim chance of this happening Stepan is a great player.

I'm not sure it's shortsighted at all. Im sure Brown/White factored into the decision to move Zibanejad. At the very least Brassard will be a cheap stop gap until one of them are ready. And I know there's more than just myself that have said they prefer Pageau over Zibanejad prior to this trade going down.

Which one is turris and which one of those guys won a cup that year? Paint me confused...or does king henrik now play for ottawa? Or is this an attempt to correlate the nyr team in because of the trade at hand? Either way...good luck winning a cup with turris as your 1c

It's possible that he doesn't repeat, but I'm done counting out Pageau. He's so good that he finds a way to shine bright no matter what role he's in. He's a complete gem.

Pageau is most certainly a strong part of Ottawas depth, and has every right to be included in that discussion.

Brassard is their 1C. And Brassard was that team's 1C. You know, that team that literally played for the Stanley Cup in a series. Since you insisted no team with Brassard as their 1C would ever compete.

Uhm....except one guy is Tyler Seguin and the post you quoted was about Mika Zibanejad. Assuming by your username you are a Rangers fan you are going to be massively disappointed if you expect a Seguinesque breakout season from Zibby.

I honestly expect Miller, Hayes, Kreider, some player that may put it all together or may not. I find it to be a gamble, one I'd like to see them replicate using Nash, Zucc, Staal pretty much any player the Rangers have 28 or over.

I don't want the Rangers to be particularly good at the present, they need to go through the years like Ottawa did that led to them being able to draft at #6 to begin with and hopefully they too find a gem or two at #15 along the way.

They had 3 centers that played like a good 2th center, why would they need another? They need a 1C

He has maybe 1 season as a average 1C, and that was not this season.

Zibanejad ended as 37 among centers, that makes him a good 2th center pointswise.

Last 3 years ranking among centers (points):
Brassard: 22nd , 23rd , 43rd
K. Turris: Inj, 18th, 22nd

We may have a slightly below average #1 center, but our 2nd line center is way above average.

He's literally the lowest end #1 you can likely find and on anything resembling a cup contender he isn't

I've already talk about the centers above.

Ottawa had 3 of the top-30 scoring wingers in the NHL last year and our 2nd line center will be above average.

Besides, did you notice that the 7th highest scoring center in the NHL last season had a whopping 70 points and 73 points the year before. :boredom:

Having two potential 60 point centers doesn't sound that bad.

Don't get me wrong they're good players, but i think people are overrating ottawas top 6

The average team would have two forwards in the top-60 scoring forwards. A forward at 15th in scoring and 45th in scoring

Ottawa Forward Scoring ranks among forwards (points):
35th , 43rd, 47th, 56th

Turris is was injured last season, but finished 33rd and 53rd the two previous seasons. So it should have been 5 forwards in the top-60.

In 2014 Brassard was the first line center on a Finals team.

In 2015 he was the first line center on a Presidents Trophy team that went to game 7 of the ECF.

I don't think Ottawa contends anytime soon anyway, but the ship has sailed as far as teams contending with Brassard as their best center.

On paper.

On the ice it was their best line and you know it.

You're gonna like Brassard.

Man do I ever respect you.

You've always been the most level headed Rangers fan, and always go out of your way to tell it like it is. I was very curious to hear your opinion on the trade as soon as it happened, more than just about anyone actually.

As for Zibby, you guys also got a good one, but I don't think he will ever be as big of an impact guy as Brassard has shown he can be. More of a complimentary top 6, who can take over the odd game.

Bottom line is the trade made perfect sense for both teams, and they both got what they wanted.

Thank you.

I just hope Zibanejad gives a ****. To me, that's the biggest loss. Brassard would lay in front of a train for his teammates.
