Grier's IQ is less than total points Zack Ostapchuk will score in NHL!
Is it the league where I have McJesus? The positive of this trade: I now have 4 sharks young guys in my keeper league that I can offer to @Kcoyote3 for a ransom. The negative: I will miss that tomato faced bandit I have come to love in Fabian Zetterlund
Damn, tell us what you really think Jux?Your pipeline is garbage. No offense, or anything.
The fact that some Sens fans have given up on him at 21 tells me all you need to know.
Yeah because Reilly worked out so well in Pitts and NY.It's just not that hard to replace Zetterlund's production in free agency and it's certainly not hard to replace his defensive impact.
Signing like Reilly Smith to a 1-2 year contract as a bridge to Chernyshov makes more sense in the long run than signing Zetterlund to a contract that would drive his trade value even lower than it is now.

He's collecting assets because we're still in the accumulation stage of the rebuild.Removing the human element of a team is how you end up being the Chicago Blackhawks or the Buffalo Sabres.
Grier isn't building a team. He's collecting players.
It's like a drug. He trades em off so he has something to aim for with his next batch of Goodwill free agents in the offseason.Something disturbing about Grier getting pillaged of at least one mid round pick per trade.
League where you have Guentzel and Hintz which I will take both for Ostapchuk and Chernyshov. Is it the league where I have McJesus?
Cause he's not for sale!
What exactly did he accumulate here? Another bottom 6 player who's proven nothing in the NHL? Maybe he can be another Zadina. Is there really that huge a difference between a mid 2nd and the top pick in the 4th? It's all a crapshoot after the first anyways. He's collecting assets because we're still in the accumulation stage of the rebuild.
My only guess is that the pick gives him the flexibility to move up in the draft or get a 2nd pairing caliber defenseman. We'll see. I would've only moved Zetterlund for a defenseman but this might just be the roundabout way to do that. This was a terrible deal, I have no idea what went behind thought process on this one... Also him being Eklund's best friends makes this even worse... He was one of the few players that showed interest to stay here and that is valuable. MG takes a giant hit with this one.
Presumably this was the best offer on the table so the options were 1) accept it 2) sign Zetterlund to a bloated extension that would hurt his trade value even further 3) risk arbitration. They also clearly don't see Ostapchuk or the 2nd as garbage. Maybe they're wrong - I certainly don't place much value on the 2nd (especially since we had to send them a 4th) - but Ostapchuk likely still has a few more years of growth left in him and he's 4 years closer in age to the core than Zetts.I just don’t understand why trade him for garbage? This is a garbage return. He was dedicated to the team, a great scorer and a perfect eventual 3rd liner on a cup team. He competes, great in the locker room… it just feels like a completely useless trade. If we got a defenseman, fine, but a 4th liner? Why the hell do we need that?
I'm with you on not loving this deal, but the second round is about the only other round with any obvious difference from the rest. If 90% of value comes from round 1, 5% comes from round 2 and the rest is the rest. What exactly did he accumulate here? Another bottom 6 player who's proven nothing in the NHL? I imagine he's planning on using his plethora of draft picks to bring in someone in the offseason that's closer to ready.I'm with you on not loving this deal, but the second round is about the only other round with any obvious difference from the rest. Or... wait to trade him in the offseason. Ostapchuk is nothing like Zadina. He could develop into a better version of Sturm. There isn't a massive difference between the picks but it's upgrading the odds of the lottery ticket. Stack enough of them together and you'll eventually find a player. This is more helpful to the rebuild than overpaying Zetterlund to score on a bad team before trying to trade him down the line with 4x the cap hit would be.What exactly did he accumulate here? Every other team also knows he has a strong arb case. His RFA rights would have certainly fetched less than this. Even if Ottawa can't come to terms on a contract they're getting a playoff push and potentially a playoff run out of him.Or... wait to trade him in the offseason. Also insane when we have two of the worst contracts in the league relative to production on ice in Vlasic and Goodrow. What the f*** are we afraid of? That Zetterlund is somehow going to be worse value than them?If Ostapchuk comes in and suddenly performs as a high end 3C or something, I’ll gladly eat crow and praise the Sharks scouting guys. Right now, on its face, this deal likes awful. Being afraid to re-sign Zetterlund to a pricier deal when we literally need to sign guys to get to the floor is insane.
Since the Vlasic draft of 2005, the only sharks 2nd rounders that have "hit" have been Ferraro, Nieto and Tierney. Excuse me if I don't share the same assumption that we'll eventually find a player. Even if we do, the chances of any 2nd rounder from here on out hitting won't be known until 2028-29 at the earliest.Ostapchuk is nothing like Zadina. He could develop into a better version of Sturm.
