Also, this is how you end up with Eklund asking for 9 a year, because "it's just business", and how he gets traded because Grier won't meet his demands.

I think he's an in between guy. High end third line, low end second line player. Because he played on the first line last season, I think there's a tendency to overrate him. But he's young and not unrestricted so I would have had to have a compelling offer to move him and this isn't it.
this is less than compelling, its basically negative value.

Did you forget about Couture's $8m on IR?
I have us at $58.8 million with all buyout/retention/IR money.

The only RFAs worth resigning and relevant to the NHL are Kovalenko, Mukhamadullin, and Thompson. Collectively, they'll cost between $3 and 4 million.

We will need a goalie, probably another $3-4 million. Additional minimum contracts will add maybe another $2.75 million.

We'll be bottoming out around $68.5 million next year. This is assuming no buyouts, trades, or unexpected resignings. Obviously, we will be adding a few more expensive skaters to likely take the place of those additional minimum contracts.

I am curious as to the numbers in that discussion with Lemieux regarding Zetterlund. If Zetterlund is looking for 7m/year+ I get not wanting to invest that in someone who is ideally a 3rd line forward on a good team. But also someone who is not trusted to play shorthanded.

I was ready and expecting him to sign a 4-5 year deal at 5.5m per, but maybe he is expecting a lot more than that.

I mean, Eklund's not a $9 million a year player even with the cap going up. If he's not willing to sign for less than that he should be traded.

He's not. That's my point. The difference in what Zets was asking and the team was offering is probably along the lines of what Eklund would have asked for before and now after.

Weren't they best friends?

I'm really looking forward to watching Noah "Shean Donovan 2.0" Gregor speed into the zone on a breakaway and then do f*** all with the puck cause he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Boy, am I going to miss not having to watch Noah Gregor quickly skate around the left side of the net and then lose the puck when he comes back down the right wall.
Think of all those breakaways sprung by Smith and Macklin passes not even hitting the net!

Sens Fan Here.

So Ostapchuk is one of the more promising prospects from our pipeline IMHO. Thought he was going to break into the team this year but couldn't stick. I don't think its a question of if he will be a NHL player its a question of when. High floor low ceiling player. I see him as a third line swiss army knife player with a rat like attitude. Is big and plays mean. Will lead your PK eventually. One of those players that you will need for deep runs.

Obvious knocks are slow top speed, and not much offensive IQ

There are some sens fans that will disagree with my take tho and have given up on him.

Your pipeline is garbage. No offense, or anything.

The fact that some Sens fans have given up on him at 21 tells me all you need to know.

If he's going to pout and make unreasonable contract demands just because we traded his buddy then that's probably not a guy you want on the team.

I don't think Eklund will do that. He and Zetterlund were only teammates for two years and they can still hang out in Sweden in the offseason.

Removing the human element of a team is how you end up being the Chicago Blackhawks or the Buffalo Sabres.

Grier isn't building a team. He's collecting players.

This was a terrible deal, I have no idea what went behind thought process on this one... Also him being Eklund's best friends makes this even worse... He was one of the few players that showed interest to stay here and that is valuable. MG takes a giant hit with this one.

What is a fair deal for Eklund anyway? Feel like we should try to lock him long term this offseason. Wyatt Johnston just did 5x8.4 and he is more accomplished than Eklund. Would love to get him on a 8x7 deal, but he might expect more or want a shorter term.

It's just not that hard to replace Zetterlund's production in free agency and it's certainly not hard to replace his defensive impact.

Signing like Reilly Smith to a 1-2 year contract as a bridge to Chernyshov makes more sense in the long run than signing Zetterlund to a contract that would drive his trade value even lower than it is now.
