They were literally trading Rantanen because he wouldn't sign, but they would have been happy to have the same problem with another guy? I don't think so, they would've just kept Rantanen if they were happy to roll with a rental RW.They aren't getting a guarantee for a rental. They wanted a win-now player and had to give up on it because they had no leverage.

I was in Raleigh for 6 months on a reorg assignment for a large US multinational changing systems and people after an acquisition .. folks are all car crazy Nascar junkies and hoops too .. this was 20+ years ago but only 2 guys out of a few hundred even knew hockey .. I couldn't even give away canes tickets thats how bad it wasThey play in Raleigh Durham NC. It’s not as nice as Nashville, Tampa or Dallas but it’s OK. A little too basketball heavy but other than that it’s good place to live.
It’s confirmed. He was asked to waive. He declined.
Raleigh itself is crap, but the Triangle nearby is nice.I was in Raleigh for 6 months on a reorg assignment for a large US multinational changing systems and people after an acquisition .. folks are all car crazy Nascar junkies and hoops too .. this was 20+ years ago but only 2 guys out of a few hundred even knew hockey .. I don’t Willy wanting to move to a place with high expectations. Toronto is a great fit for him because of the attention the team gets, but more importantly, theres no pressure and likelihood of shorter seasons.I see Willy as the most willing to waive. Rielly has local family now. Matthews is the captain.
Nylander on NYR makes a ton of sense.
20 yrs ago, sure. They still love auto racing - Charlotte has a lot of NASCAR and Penske has their shop there.I was in Raleigh for 6 months on a reorg assignment for a large US multinational changing systems and people after an acquisition .. folks are all car crazy Nascar junkies and hoops too .. this was 20+ years ago but only 2 guys out of a few hundred even knew hockey .. I just can’t see a trade making sense between NYR and TOR for Matthews - they have enough top 6 C’s. They don’t have any RS wingers.I don’t Willy wanting to move to a place with high expectations. I think Matthews would love NYC
The Athletic's best report on this is that Carolina brought Marner for Rantanen up and Treliving said it's a non-starter. At some point in the lead up to the deadline, we told Marner that we want him to stay and we want to get that deal done as soon as he wants it done and asked if he'd want to move now if he isn't going to stay and he said he wants to stay. That's what I was thinking too.
It doesn't make sense for either Carolina or the Leafs to do this. Leafs would be wanting to load up by adding Rantanen to the core, including Marner, already in place. Carolina wanted to recover assets and still have an adequate incoming roster player for replacement.
Gotta wonder if there was something else going on beyond just Rantanen/Marner.
many ppl are too invested in Marner, so the media plays them like a fiddle.. I'm quietly sitting around waiting for the playoffs and will only get mad if and when the time comes. The Athletic's best report on this is that Carolina brought Marner for Rantanen up and Treliving said it's a non-starter. That kind of report doesn't sell subscriptions though, so they have seven articles about Marner in the last three days with varying levels of OMGzzzzz headlines.
