I think natural talent and an original enthusiasm about playing in the nhl got him to a certain level. Then it actually becomes a job, and some guys just don’t have that dogged determination on or off the ice.

But their timeline is now and you aren't getting a PLD quality player for 3 million, even at his worst.

A 40 point player? They could find a dozen of those guys at 3 million a year that actually give a shit. My guess is that they use the extra 3m to resign Roy that they couldn't have done with PLD on the roster. LA had an issue of finding a starting goalie, signing Byfield and extending Roy with the cap they had. They were going to have to at least lose one of those guys (definitely not Byfield). So it was either a cheap shitty goalie or lose Roy. Now, they can keep them all. I hope they don't resign Roy and run with Clarke and Spence but it sounds like they really want to keep Roy. They are set up like this at the moment...

To those that say "watch Dubois bounce back" clearly don't understand his point totals

He WILL score a minimum of 60pts next year, this is a guarantee

He'll go from 15mins / 3rd line / 2nd pp to 18mins / 1st line / 1st pp. Just this alone will allow Dubois to have a season of 60pts or so.

Those same people will point to his 60pt season and say "see, he bounced back"

PLD was my least favorite King ever. He has talent but shows up in 1/10 games. Needs PP1 to me to produce points. Can’t really make others better. Worst trade ever for LA and they sent fan favorite Vilardi to boot.
