The thing is that he can't pass the puck to other players either, he has 22 ESA in his last 113 games and a mere 13 in those games on the PP where he plays an extraordinary amount of time.

He has becomes one dimensional offensively.

Backstrom, Kuz. Oshie is 35 next year and Mantha looks great for stretches then disappears.

I think time will show that the rate and term 5X9.5 million cripples the franchise.

And that's not even bold Ovi turns 36 going into next season.
Have you even looked at the contracts they have? They're fine.

While I may agree that the cap hit is a bit too high, the term is fine and it is not going to cripple the franchise.

Why all the talk about Oshie here, his shooting % probably went up for a number of reasons when he joined the Capitals, you made the claim that Ovi had the best shot in the league and I still have no idea on what you mean by that?

Lots of players have really good releases, Ovi sure does but your comment had little context.

That's great and all but what actual value does that have?

I mean the same survey said Austin Matthews was the best goal scorer with 46%, does that mean that Matthews who trailed AO in the best shot category 48-28 must be doing something else to be the best goal scorer right?

I'm not trying to be a p**ck about things but asked a legitimate question and instead you talked about Oshie and now the players poll but I guess I'll take your answer that Ovi takes SOG from farther away than Oshie which means well about as much as your orignal point.

Best shot is an opinion sure just like best player, most complete player, best stickhandler, which player would you want on your team for a single game to win any position.

I know which ones are more important than the other ones.

Probably makes more from endorsements. Isn't he part of Coca-Cola and Nike? Him having better players around him is to his benefit if he wants to chase Wayne anyways. The lead up will make him millions more than if he has to play with scrubs.
Ovechkin doesn't play with scrubs. Who is better player? McDavid, obviously. If Ovi agrees to cut his paycheck, the caps still can't afford McDavid.

Have a nice evening.

It's a Age 35+ contract too. So cap hit counts in full no matter what happens with Ovechkin the next five seasons.
Even if he's on LTIR?
Not that I hope he gets injured though. Would have been fun if he breaks the old record, from another era.

Imagine he didn't have to sit out 1.5 lockout seasons & 2 Covid shortened seasons. Would've broke Gretzky's record within the next 2 years. Now he has to average 33 goals a year for the next 5 years.
To be fair, Gretzky also had at least one lockout season too. 93/94, if I'm not remembering it wrong.
But I think Ovi's numbers are stronger anyway. Gretzky had goons to protect him, all the way. Ovi protects on his own.

While true, Wilson skates his RW most of the time. When they moved Wilson to the 2nd line for Mantha Ovechkin got harrassed pretty good.

- Look at the Matthews vs Ovechkin shot chart. Matthews is much better at getting into high danger areas to get his shot off, which is expected at their respected ages. You can easily have a better shot and be a worse goal scorer than another player. Ovechkin has also been the better goal scorer over the prior years and is much older.

- The contract is obviously to also reward his past accomplishments and is beneficial from a business perspective. It’s not ideal from a competitiveness perspective but it’s not a shock.

- You should be more concerned with the Canucks bad cap situation when they haven’t won anything and are a mediocre team on their best days.

I'm very critical of the Canucks "going for it" and their second rounder this year was the wrong pick IMO as well.

The bottom line is that for team success, paying for past success to stars just doesn't pan out, ask the Black Hawks.

The best shot thing is obviously over rated because there are other elements to scoring goals and there are also other elements to winning hockey games than scoring goals.

Ovechkin has seen a clear drop in overall play the least 2 years and at some point with age the drop will become so significant that playing him more on the PP than any other forward in the league and 20 MPG overall is going to hurt his team even more.

This is compounded by his line mates, other than Wilson being on their back 9 as well.

And how did things end for the guy who harassed him? Don't forget Ovi is about 230-240 pounds and gives very few shits.

Damn, no discount there. Should've been 3 years at that caphit. Then give him 1 year deals at a similsr caphit if he keep it up.
Tons of teams would have given him this contract. Dude still scored 24 goals in 45 games. Easily still a 40 goal scorer and he's not worth 9.5? Give me a break.

And he's earned the courtesy of not having 1-year "prove me deals." You would be done as a GM within a year.

I’m curious to see how the HF GMs would rather spend the $9.5M instead of using it to sign Ovechkin if they were Washington.

Would they rather give it to an overrated defenseman like Seth Jones?
Im curious why an hf gm thinks this thinking justifies throwing that kind of contract at a 36 year old if the goal is to win?

He could've taken 2 years so if his performance falls off a cliff he could take way less on his next deal and get paid commensurate with his performance going forward. That way, if two or three years from now guys become available, they have that much more cap space to make a deal happen.

Yes we allllll get it. You can justify tge insane overpayment bc he's meant so much and is chasing the record. You can still recognize going forward it's going to be like paying a 5 or 6m forward performance wise 9.5m. It's not crippling but it does hurt a bit to have a good 3-4 m unavailable.

Maybe by some miracle he remains as good as he was last year for all 5 seasons.

There is no way Ovechkin would’ve accepted to sign only for 2 years. If they didn’t give him the term, someone else would’ve given it to him or he would’ve gone back to Russia to finish his career.

It would’ve been an embarrassment of monumental proportions if the Capitals decided to be cheap on $ or term and not sign him to this deal. They would’ve been ridiculed for the rest of eternity.

The Capitals can still win, everyone is sleeping on them now but they still finish near the top of the standings. This contract will not be an obstacle to go get another Cup.

There’s a lot of room to improve. The Caps have $11M tied up in Jensen, Kempny, Schultz and Hagelin. These 4 guys combined bring less to the table than Ovechkin alone

2 points.

1. Ovechkin negotiates his own contracts. Its not what he does for a living. There is just no way that he does a two year contract and then a series of one year contracts. No chance. No way.

2. Ovechkin has shown no sign of drop off in his ability. In the last normal season(that was shortened unexpectedly) he scored 48 goals in 68 games. You would choose to predict what his skill erosion would look like? As the contracts reaches the last couple of years Ovechkin will be closing in the the all time goals record. Do you have any clue how much money Ovechkin is going to be making for the team and for the league as that happens??

Ovechkin signed a 13 year contract that at the time was blasted for being too much money for a player whose style of play will never allow him to perform up to his end of the contract. In fact he significantly overperformed that contract. Darnell Freaking Nurse just signed a contract for Ov money. I am not going to suggest that Ovechkin isn't going to perform up to his % of the salary cap at the end of his deal. I dare you to do it(please be specific). For certain he is not getting paid anything like what he is worth based on the money he makes for his bosses.

Ovechkin at 9.5 million is a much better value for a win now team than either Trouba at 8 million or Kreider at 6.5, yet somehow those don't stop New York from trying to become contenders.

But you seem to forget that 99 new how to pass... was pretty good at it also! I also think Ovi is happy with Wilson on the team :) . Ovi would also appreciate imo, protection if he had played in the 99 era! Just saying.

Well I said 3 years instead of 5, learn how to read. This will be a bad contract in the last 2 years of that deal.

So? The GM's are idiots that always overpay. Look at Clarkson's deal, the epitome of a "wtf are they thinking?!" And a lot of teams wanted him.

Everyone and their mother knew he wasn't worth that deal and it still didn't stop the GM's going after him, offering him dumb deals.

You're one of those old dinosaurs. Why the f*** do you ruin your future for someone? Yeah Ovi is the GOAT goalscorer. But 5 years is way too much at that caphit.

Huge risk he'll be worth $5-6M the last years of that deal.

Only in hockey do you pay players for past achievements. In football (soccer) no one gives out 5 year deals to players this old. It doesn't matter who they are.

And even if they did, there's no cap in football (soccer).

Did someone just reference David Clarkson in reference to an Ovi contract?

Great deal for a guy who has put the Capitals franchise on the map. In those last couple years you are concerned about, just sit in your seat and look up at the banner he brought you guys. That should bring you some joy. Consider those years a thank you for that.
