He won. He had the Caps firing on all cylinders.

What more can I say...hell...how do you not want that guy back at that moment in time.

He finally pushed through and damn...you guys were playing on another level than everyone else.

Do you disagree? I mean it really puts you in a rock and a hardplace. You have demean your own team to validate losing Trotz.

Just be honest and say it was dumb. I'd have more respect for you.
I've said it in other threads I'm glad all of it happened but I believe the caps and trotz relationship ended before the playoffs. They built a team that couldn't beat the pens in the playoffs. They were going in different directions after the season. They were written off going into the playoffs. Number 1 goalie had fallen apart and Columbus was red hot. Caps caught lightning in a bottle and accidently became the team they always could be for 20 games. Canadians had that this year. Imo winning the cup was awkward for trotz and caps management because the ship had sailed. Not worried about your respect. Your entitled to your opinion

Sounds liek a greta team achievement. I would totally sign in DC to watch Ovi break the record.

What a great mission statement.

I UFA's line up for that.

I'm saying it makes perfect sense for the Caps management to be fine with the contract for non-hockey reasons. At the end of the day, it's still a business and making money is part of the goal as well even if fans don't want to acknowledge it.

So it was a one off eh?

You chose to disparage the caps?

Pride is sometimes a crazy thing.

I can't believe that an opposing fan had more faith than some of its own fans. Sad stuff.

I guess it's easier to claim Cinderella run. Easier to digest.

42 points in 45 games this season, 24 at 5on5. It's only going to get worse

He's going to be 40 years old with a $9.5 caphit while the cap is going to remain stagnant. This is not a good contract and I'm surprised that Ovechkin has given up on winning another cup.

I'm not saying he should have taken a massive pay cut, but he would have helped his team be more competitive with an 8M and would improve his chance of having more help to achieve his goalscoring run.

I understand that even if it's not about money, some people misguidedly believe they must have a top dog salary as a form of respect. In that case, I think Ovechkin should have considered signing the 9.5M but maybe go for it on a single year deal? Go at it one year at a time guarantees that if the Capitals decide to go in a different direction and rebuild, you can always go to a more competitive team that will maximize your talent.

With that being said, it's still a solid deal for both theCaps and Ovechkin. Might not even be his last contract!

Tampa just won one with Stamkos being half the player Ovi was this year. Hell, Pens are trying to compete with Mike Matheson and Sid who's all but given up on playoff hockey and looks like Tyler Johnson out there. He's still the best win now move until he proves otherwise

LOL at that cap hit for 5 years. I couldve seen that cap hit for 2 years. But 5!?

Damn, he really effed the caps on this one. At least they did win their one cup already. I dont think anyone outside Wsh really thinks they're winning another so it makes sense I guess to maximize his money and go for Gretzky

Too young.
I love these jokes related to Toronto picking up players who are almost over the hill.
That being said if Ovechkin went to Toronto (Assume we live in a crazy world where he signs for 5M so that Toronto can afford him) I'm pretty sure a ton of goalies would just give up and retire. (Toronto's included)

That's ok, no one thought they were winning one in 2018 either

To be fair the Caps afre build for 2-3 more years where they can challange and have Playoff runs, if the core can conserve their performances. Caps most be the oldest team in the NHL by now
Then the Caps 2-3 years of dealing with bad contracts and in rebuild mode. Well Caps need to keep draft picks from now on

Selanne is a first ballot HOFer and took a decent discount to keep the ducks competitive. He might not be on Ovechkin level, but had great production age 35-40.

Selanne age 35-40 380gp 185g 389pts (40g 84pts per 82gp)

He made 2 460 000$ per year on average those years + 1 250 000$ in personal bonuses one year. Now thats a first ballot HOFer taking a discount to make the team better. Ovechkin deal is just ridiculous.

Not the same:)

Hahah had to laugh about the pens and MM.....that window is slammed shut

He won't break the goal record but should beat Howes record if no major injuries should end up 2nd all time. To beat Gretzky's record he would have to average 33 goal seasons for those 5 seasons. I'll be surprised if he even makes it to season 5 of contract.

This is his farewell Kobe deal. Probably way overpaid for the last 3 years but after everything Ovy has done for that team, the amount of money he's made them and single handedly raised the value of that franchise they definitely owe him.

I think people comprehend OV averaging 33 goals over these 5 years as in getting 33 goals every year… I have him average Atleast 45 for the next 2 seasons, then it’s just 25 per season for 3 seasons

Logically speaking, how is he "probably way overpaid"?

Nice to see Ovie signed for 5 years so he can challenge for an individual goal scoring record. Unfortunately, he has chosen a cap hit that disregards team accomplishments. Guess 1 Cup is enough.

So the margin between no cups (Ovechkin at 9.5) and back to back cups (Stamkos playing like a 40 year old Ovechkin at 8.5) is 1 million dollars? Talk about razor thin parity rofl

It’s about health and longevity. If he does make it to the end of that contract, 33/year pace is very attainable assuming he plays full seasons. If he keeps close to his current pace for another 2-3 years and then can dip down anywhere in the 20s for his last 2, he gets there.

He just scored 48 in 68 games 19-20 and was at around a 40 goal pace last year (injuries and shortened season). I’m not going to say him catching Gretzky is likely but I also don’t see how it can be said so surely that’s out of the question given all we have to go by.

With a flat cap probably the next two years Caps are in cap hell and will find winning in the playoffs hard to do. But Caps have to sell tickets and he drives the franchise ala Crosby.
