Bad contract, good business deal
I don't see it as a bad contract for the Caps. Even aside from the loyalty and appreciation thing. The Caps just like the Pens know they are an era team. When Ovechkin retires they will have to build from a scratch anyway. Everything revovlves around Ovechkin as long as he is there. It's not like they will be able to smooth transition it by having Ovechkin on a smaller contract.

JMHO. More pretender than contender.

What teams aside from Tampa do you view as contenders?

The Caps are likely done as premiere contenders, but still could go on a miracle run.
Ovechkin has a real chance at breaking the record.

Yes, it is huge money, but it is worth it from a business point of view. Ovechkin chasing the record will keep people in the stands and buying merch. It is well-worth the 9.5M a year, even if you decrease your chances at another Cup.

OV chasing the record is worth a lot of $$$. The closer he gets the more valuable it will be. That's millions in free advertising alone, not to mention butts in seats, etc.

Sounds liek a greta team achievement. I would totally sign in DC to watch Ovi break the record.

What a great mission statement.

I UFA's line up for that.

NYI, FL, CAR

So a team that hasn't made it out of the first round and has a TEN million dollar contract to a sieve goaltender, a team that got past the second round once and has questions in goal and throughout the lineup?

NYI I'll give you but Montreal showed more than those other teams FFS. Capitals have as much of a chance at another cup as either of them

A couple thoughts:

1) Yes $9.5 million for 5 years is too much. But he's not "handicapping" the team like some may think. The Caps only have a couple more years to try and make another cup run, and Ovi at $9.5 is no different than if he was making his older (and slightly higher) cap hit. Backstrom = 33, Carlson = 31, Eller = 31, Oshie = 34, Kuznetsov on a sharp decline. The Caps are destined for a rebuild in 1 or 2 years regardless. Ovi's caphit in years 3-5 is irrelevant.

2) Not that Ovi will live up to a $9.5 million price-tag anyways (on-ice performance), he is still pretty much one of the safest bets in NHL history to at least come close. Ovi is the best 30-35 year old goalscorer in NHL history, no reason to think he won't be the best at 36-4o either.

No they really don't.

Sorry. It's only my opinion but your window shut the day you let Trotz leave.

Montreal was a cinderella story. Losing record. They won't even make the playoffs this year.

So your criteria for contender has nothing to do with how well a team actually, you know, contends in this real physical world we inhabit. Got it. I'm sure ufas would be thrilled to sign up for your team's "dude we're a contender trust me" banner.

Again, explain how a 9.5 million dollar Ovechkin is more of a hindrance than a 10 million dollar Bob.

easily...the rest of their lineup.

FL is stacked. The Caps aren't.

Again, I know reality is harsh...sorry

Honestly, during most of the Ovechkin era (including all the other years of Trotz's tenure here), the Caps have been regular season warriors and playoff disappointments. The 2018 Cup run was an exception, a miracle run where the entire team was firing on all cylinders and all demons of the past were exorcised--despite the fact that that particular lineup is generally agreed upon as being one of the weaker Caps teams in recent history.

IMO, it's pretty weird/naive/uninformed to think that this contract spells doom for the Caps' "dominance" or top-Cup-contender status or whatever, because 1) who cares about regular-season records and 2) outside of that one glorious postseason, they were never dominant in the playoffs. Regardless of how many times they get to beat up on the lesser teams of their division during the regular season (pre-Covid and now), they've pretty much been just another middle-of-the-pack playoff team with a decent-to-good puncher's chance (depending on health, chemistry, etc). And they'll likely stay that way for the rest of Ovechkin's career.

Reality is the capitals won a cup and are still comfortably making playoffs.

Your "stacked" Florida won 1 more playoff game than the capitals last year and is gonna have to pay Barkov more than Bob if he decides to stay... So there goes their stacked roster.

I know reality is harsh... sorry

Trotz taking the Islanders to back to back ECF tells me you are wrong.

But that's only my opinion. It means nothing.

Trotz was obviously pressing all the right buttons finally.

You don't wish he had another chance at a repeat?

I understand why you don't want to give him any credit.

You'd have to admit you made a huge mistake in letting him go.

I only see excuses ftrom Caps fans..it was time...blah blah blah.

HUGE mistake.

I'm a bolts fan and a notorious realist.

FL played us harder than anyone else. EDIT: NYI definitely was the hardest

Great coach...great team.

FL>>>>>>>>caps

I'd love to play you again in the playoffs but you'll never make it out of your division.
