Never any doubt he would stick around there and retire as a Cap. 2018 sealed that.

Looks like hes gunning for Gretzkys number and wow I couldn't be happier. I really hope he breaks it, that would just be huge for the league/sport.

I could do this all day...
Price seems steep but they keep him as he is the face of franchise

Its pretty much the same as he was making before so from their POV it works cap wise. I don't think they were expecting him to take less even if he was so-so this year.

You can't always look at things like that. Jagr said without three years in KHL he probably never lasts as long in NHL. Selanne said he was considering retiring after the season with Avalanche BUT he was able to take year off (fix his knee!)because lock out and played till 44 or whatever it was!

Sometimes those breaks are good time for body to recover and make you last longer.

Breaks are not always a bad thing
I agree with that for the latest Covid years. But you can't tell me a full year lockout in 2004 benefited a 19 year old Ovechkin in terms of physical health or a 34 game lockout in 2012 when Ovi scored at a .66 goal per game clip in his prime years.

Thought he wanted to play for the Habs ?

Oh well, good to know we will be entertained by this guy for the next 5 years, even if some of it comes at my teams expense. Guy is a real deal superstar that all hockey fans should enjoy watching play.

You don't think you are on the decline overall?

Honestly?

Caps are in some decline, but do not underestimate them. They looked freaking scary in the first round, and would have gone deep if not the crappy goaltending and Brenden Dillon. Now they got rid of Dillon, and if Samsonov can find a groove, they are a legit contender IMO.

This is not true.

You are definitely on the dec

Half of that amount and for half as long or see ya
I might be in a minority here, but you should appreciate your legends. if that means you have to stick with the painful time with their contracts, so it'll be. They sticked with our franchises in shitty time and delivered so much glory (especially for the Pens). So why lowball them? They are legends, they deserved to be paid and appreciated.

We looked scary in games 1 and 2. Not saying the Caps are a bubble team now, but IMO they need to do some significant retooling (involving getting younger and faster) to become a contender again.

Even last year with COVID protocol to start, no real training camps, and groin issues he was on 44 goal pace. With a normal schedule this year not sure why you'd expect him to be under 45 goals?

GMBM needs to figure out he Kuznetsov issue though - he is a negative for the Capitals franchise.

If this was you know who on the pens that dude would not be talking

This fake outrage over this legend that has been pacing 40+ goals for the last few years is hilarious.

People never learn.

Joke of a contract....wow.

Dude is 36 when the next season starts.
- you don't give 50 million dollars to a 36 year old... LOL

This is not MLB.
(i know, they give 100+ million dollar contracts there for 35+ players)

Well, he won what he came for, so did Capitals,
time for them to fall to what they have been most of their time in the NHL,
meh-mediocre franchise. <bye>

PS. You had an amazing career, won the Cup, eventually
and now you got your retirement money, congrats Ovie!.

If there was no cap, sure.

But you pay players for what they are able to do now, not what they have done in the past. Or you lose.

and you expect the players to be loyal to your franchise and fans after this? if it's all business, then don't be surprised if they leave. I guess we have different perspective on things.

You mean score at a 44 goal pace and be the heart and soul of your team?

Maybe for another 2 years?

I highly doubt that he would be worth the contract near the end. He'll still be a useful player, no doubt, but I don't see him to look like Ovechkin for much longer.

'Buyout' will be part of the Caps vocabulary pretty soon, with some of their contracts.

I love the Caps and there is no denying that the team will be going down with Ovy and Backstrom unless some miracle happens.

But they can probably be a playoff team during 3-4 years of that contract and then it's gonna be the inevitable rebuild.

The Pens are in a eerily similar boat with Crosby and Malkin aging, as well as losing their top netminder a couple years go
