He was nearly a PPG last season, would've hit 40Gs in a regular length season. How much do you think a 40G physical forward is worth? The man has never had less than 30G in a full season. The only thing that org cares about is seeing OV break the record in a Caps uni. Everything else is secondary. It’s yet another 30+ year old long term big money contract that will be an anchor.
It’s fine that they’re prioritizing that I guess, but let’s see this for what it is.

You can't believe someone wants to maximize his earnings? I guess you haven't observed humans very attentively.cant believe he wouldnt take less to put a better team around him and the other vets.
What's, he slumping?5 years. 164 goals to go. 32.8 per year.
5 years wow
Good for him!!!
His wife is hot.
The last 3 years what? Last 3 years of this deal? We'll see, I'm not putting too much stock in him scoring like 30 at ES at 40 years old but he should be good enough for 15 via ES+12/15 via PP if health is not the issue. If that's the case he would be very close to the Gretzky and might sign his final one year deal for league minimum just to break the record and call it a day.I said the last 3 years
This is the most underrated aspect of this whole re-signing.His wife is hot.
Cool?So was Pavel Buchnevich.
Had the Caps cared exclusively about winning, they would have had more Cups since Ovi entered the league.Such a bad contract.
Wouldn’t mind seeing OV break the record, but this signals to me that Washington doesn’t really care about winning during the next 5 years.
I dont see him putting 30 up in the 3rd year let alone 4th and 5th but best of luck to him
This is a paycut, but cool story anyway.cant believe he wouldnt take less to put a better team around him and the other vets.
I mean what do you do though? If he went to the open market some team would assuredly pay him that or more as a way to put fans in the seats.
He's a first ballot HoFer, he's probably taking a bit of a discount, it's pretty much the only outcome you can really reason with.
He's also not the type of guy I'm particularly worried about not caring in 2-3 years
I was talking about tge back end of the deal.2nd in the NHL in ESG = "power play specialist?"
NHL Stats
Huh. Tough crowd. By that standard the vast majority of players suck at everything.
Imagine he didn't have to sit out 1.5 lockout seasons & 2 Covid shortened seasons. Would've broke Gretzky's record within the next 2 years. Now he has to average 33 goals a year for the next 5 years.
i would agree with no covid and strikes he would have passed gretzky but he's not gonna reach it anymore nowPeople said that about him in 2011
Everyone here that has ever bashed OV has eaten a crow, I'm surprised some of you haven't learned.
I was talking about tge back end of the deal.
At this point he is just trying to beat the record.
Who cares if you compete, eh?
He will be 36 before next season starts, so it's really a contract from age 36–40.
Ovechkin's been a one-dimensional/flawed player already for a number of years now. Washington, with Kuznetsov no longer interested in playing up to his potential and Ovi/Bäckström entering retirement age, I wouldn't be surprised to see them miss the playoffs occasionally during the next 5 year window.
