Obviously a 5 year, $9.5 mil AAV contract that starts when a guy is 36 is fairly likely to be bad by the end, regardless of the player. When Ovie is in his late 30s, there’s a good chance this is an albatross contract. I mean, how many forwards in NHL history have truly been worth the modern day equivalent of $9.5 mil at age 39-40? Not Gretzky, not Lemieux, not Jagr … maybe Teemu? If there are any at all, it’s only a few. The only current NHLers who are 38+ are Thornton, Marleau and Spezza, and none of them were worth remotely close to $9.5 mil at 38+, all are/were worth more like ~$1-3 mil at that age, and Ovie will likely be similar.

However, he’s a franchise defining player, and he won Washington a cup. He’s still one of the best wingers in the league, I’m guessing the Caps are hoping he remains worth his price tag over the first ~3 years, and the last ~2 years are a “thanks for everything Ovie” type payoff.

Basically, it’s too much term at his age, but he’s earned it.

You don't think you are on the decline overall?

Honestly?

I mean yeah, the Presidents trophy teams were better, but that's not due to Ovie's cap hit. He's been the absolute most reliable elite contributor in the NHL throughout his career, and the most steady contributor the Capitals have ever had.

The Caps were supposed to be in decline after losing Justin Williams, Karl Alzner, Marcus Johnasson, and Nate Schmidt. Then they won a cup and the division a few more times.

The "window is shut" predictions frequently fall flat. I think the Caps could very well remain a contender. They need some young talent to develop on the blue line, and they have some prospects in that regard. They need their young talented goalie to get his head out of his arse. It's not a bad team with Ovie, Backstrom, Oshie, Wilson, Kuznetsov, Mantha, Carlson, Orlov, Eller, etc.

I might be in a minority here, but you should appreciate your legends. if that means you have to stick with the painful time with their contracts, so it'll be. They sticked with our franchises in shitty time and delivered so much glory (especially for the Pens). So why lowball them? They are legends, they deserved to be paid and appreciated.
Agreed but sure glad my team won't have that contract 3 years from now at that price.

I don't think he is going to break the record. Maybe the contract will look terrible in its second year and abysmal in the rest. However, it's nice to see this, in the era of cap hells, buyouts and odd trades of your living legends anywhere for nothing just to spare few bucks... ...someone is able to show gratitude and offer reward contract like this.

Other thing is that Ovechkin should've also show something and give them discount, but whatever.

Joke of a contract....wow.

Dude is 36 when the next season starts.
- you don't give 50 million dollars to a 36 year old... LOL

This is not MLB.
(i know, they give 100+ million dollar contracts there for 35+ players)

Well, he won what he came for, so did Capitals,
time for them to fall to what they have been most of their time in the NHL,
meh-mediocre franchise. <bye>

PS. You had an amazing career, won the Cup, eventually
and now you got your retirement money, congrats Ovie!.
You seem to be an expert in mediocre franchises.

This is like Lundqvist’s contract. It’s a thank you for everything that you have done for the organization.

Sounds like they are likely to overpay this time around, but they will be able to show off a legend for 5 more years, who is chasing a legendary record, which might have a lot of marketing value.

Assume part of this is knowing the back half he’ll be a great mentor for the future core, and they will need to reach the cap floor anyways

Your cup team was dominant...especially in the playoffs.

Since Trotz left you seem to have lost that edge.

JMHO. More pretender than contender.
