IMO Chevy did good . Added a good player that can play up and down the lineup. Great at faceoffs which becomes a lot more important come playoff time. The only real worry is his health, As of now it looks great. Hopefully for him it stays. Don't worry about his play, that you will like.
A late 1st isn't like winning the lotto. Any player of Monahan's ability and is in need is easily worth a late 1st.
